He could be actually innocent.
It seemed to me that the govt was tying to punish Edwards for his "sins" which were wrong and maybe even loathesome but hardly a matter for the govt to decide. In reality I wished he were found guilty, not because I believed that was the right verdict but because since the justice system does not deliver justice it might as well punish a guy who deserves it for who he is not what he has done. Thats how it works for most of the rest of us, why not him.
