I just wanted to start a post about Derek Abney of the
Baltimore Ravens.He is going into his 2nd season but
didn't play last year due to a separated shoulder.He
played for Kentucky and set all the punt and kickoff
return records their.He is also a fine wide receiver.
He is another Wes Welker like the Dolphins but might
be even better.He used to be a sprinter in high school
and has been timed in the 4.3 range.Watch for him to
make a impact with the Ravens this season assuming they
are smart enough to play him beyond special teams.
 
A great returner for Kentucky. I remember him having a numebr of great returns run back for TDs. Being short is not good in the NFL let alone being white. Hopefully he'll get a legit shot to show what he can do.
 
Derek returned to full-time action on May 23 after missing practice earlier because of problems associated with his shoulder. Being a draft choice last year should help his chances of making the team this year at least as a kick returner. He was as good as it gets in that department at Kentucky.
 
Abney was unreal to watch. His size does hurt him, but if he can have a few long runbacks for TD's this year, he may earn a permanent spot as returner for the Ravens. It's great to see some fast white men from the SEC.
 
Abney was released by the Ravens and quickly picked up by the Bears. Any team would be better for him than one coached by Brian Billick.


I would imagine either Abney or Eddie Berlin will be cut by the Bears. It's difficult to see them keeping two white receivers. Abney probably has the edge, given his kick returning skills and Berlin's injury after his first reception of the preseason. Berlin is a very good kick returner, but Abney is in a class of his own -- if he gets the opportunity that is.
 
DW, you're absolutely right about Abney. i saw the guy a couple of time in person whenhe played for Kentucky, and he's amazing. once the ball is in his hands he just darts to daylight, and if the opposition doesn't do a good job of containment he is gone! i don't think i've ever seen him caught from behind. EVER. he's tough as nails, too.


he and Dan Sheldon are very similar, but i think Sheldon is a little stronger and Abney is a little bit more elusive.both are very explosive but short. but you know what they say about small packages...
 
The Bears signed J. J. Moses to a two-year contract yesterday.Though listed as both a WR and KR, Moseshas seen action in the NFL the past three years only as a kick returner.This is not good news for Abney. Moses is the shortest player in the NFL at 5-6, and is not even listed on the current Bears depth chart at either WR or KR. Neither is Abney. Eddie Berlin is listed as the sixth receiver. Don't be surprised if both Abney and Berlin are waived by Lovie Smith.
 
Why even pick up the white guys if you are just going to cut them after a black retread becomes available?

Here's my theory. Every decision made by a pro football team is based on keeping the brothers happy. Piss the bros off and they will quit on you in a minute. Every coach has seen this all his life. They are pro coaches because they have dealt with blacks before unusally in college so they know the game.

They also know that veteran players hate summer camp and the only ones doing any work are the rookies, the border line players and the white guys. So they pick up a white player or two to keep the fans happy (at least the ones that care) then send them out to try and win some preseason games and fill the practice roster. Then when cut time comes they can dump them as soon as a retread black player is available.

This has the double effect of keeping the brothers happy cause they get to see a white guy cut and also their homies get to stay on the team. Coach has happy negroes to play for him. White fans don't care. White athletes never, ever, ever, complain. Have you ever heard once in your life a white player complain about being cut? Has a white player ever insinuated racism? But blacks do it all the time, as ridiculous as it is.

I have never quite looked at the situationfrom this angle, but the more I think about it.. it makes perfect sense!
 
Abney was cut by the Bears. Like the Seahawks with Lumsden he never was given any opportunity and was waived well before the first cutdown day. Perhaps the best kick returner in Division I-A history, and a fine receiver also, is treated like dirt by the NFL.
 
Disgusting.That is all I can say.Abney was one of the most exciting players to ever play college ball.Then he comes to the NFL to be treated like crap.What a shame.He should go play up in the CFL.They will idolize him up there.The NFL is so stupid.At least Wes Welker made it but barely.
 
With the great success of Wes Welker, I plugged the idea on footballsfuture that Derek Abney should have gotten more of a shot.

The moderators don't know what they are talking about. They obviously don't have a clue about the caste system. How could they on that site. Discussing race at any measure can get you banned from their forums, even if done so tactfully. I was told "I recommend you re-look your outlook on life" by a poster for mentioning in a Bears forum that "Mike Hass may have been doubted b/c of stereotypes b/c he's white." My statement was then edited by a moderator.



I didn't realize Abney ran a 4.4 hand timed 40 yard for scouts (which I researched later). I had Abney's combine result from nfldraftscout.com which listed it at 4.58 and questioned his speed. Welker ran a 4.61 according to nfldraftscout.com. But Welker is known to run a 3.81 short shuttle and a 6.80 3 cone, wow talk about agility and quicks!

Jax, this is true MOST of the time, but not all the time. Look at the New England Patriots for example. 99% of everything positive that gets accomplished on that particular team is because of WHITE PEOPLE:

1. Tom Brady's elite QB skills.

2. The entire great-blocking White offensive line.

3. Coach Bill Belichek.

4. Wes Welker's speed, great hands and ability to get
open.

5. Heath Evans' blocking and ball-carrying ability.

etc.........etc.........etc.......


But I digress. The Patriots don't really need to keep the blacks on the team happy. They know who's in charge, and unlike most other NFL teams, I would assume that the blacks on the Pats don't cause too much of a "problem" in the lockerroom. The reason for this is the high number of White players that they would have to deal with if they did, in fact, cause such a problem. New England may be the only team in the league (maybe the Colts as well) where the blacks don't bitch all that much.
