Hall of Famer
he's been mentioned in passing several times in various threads, but i thought he deserved one of his own.
Virginia Tech wide receiver Danny Coale, currently a sophomore, is arguably the best athlete on the Hokies. he started every game last year as a red-shirt freshman and set a new Va Tech freshman record for receptions with 36, which also led the team. this year he was second on the team with 29 catches and 572 yards ... but he accounted for the longest play from scrimmage of the season, an 81-yard catch and run against Nebraska.
the 6-foot Coale has been timed running a 4.42 in the 40, and he has a 35 1/2-inch vertical. he's also set a record for wide receivers at Va Tech with a 420-pound front squat. make sure to click the above link for some really cool action photos of him on his bio page. i've found some articles that demonstrate just how talented Coale-Burner (i've trademarked that nickname already!
) is and posted them below.

Did Dowling damage his stock for draft?</H3>
Virginia cornerback Ras-I Dowling, a junior, struggled throughout the Cavaliers' 42-13 loss to the Hokies yesterday.
Dowling was burned on four passes totaling 131 yards for Virginia Tech. Three were caught by receiver Danny Coale.
During three years at Virginia, Dowling has received numerous accolades, including the all-ACC freshman team and second-team all-ACC last year. That has fueled speculation that he would leave U.Va. for the NFL after this season.
But he started and finished his year with his two worst performances, giving up touchdown passes against William and Mary and struggling against Coale yesterday. Combined with an up-and-down year, that could be enough for scouts to advise him to return for a senior season.
Dowling was unavailable for comment after the game.![]()

CHARLOTTESVILLE
Ras-I Dowling has had plenty of good days as a cornerback at the University of Virginia - but Saturday was not among them.
Dowling, a junior from Deep Creek High, entered the afternoon ranked eighth in the ACC with nine passes defended. Three of those were interceptions.
But rival Virginia Tech picked on Dowling early and often Saturday. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor's first pass of the game went deep down the right sideline to Danny Coale, who had blown by Dowling. Even when the pass was short, Coale came back to it for a 41-yard, shoe-top catch.
Taylor's next pass also went deep to Coale, who out-jumped Dowling for a 36-yard grab to set up the Hokies' first touchdown.
By halftime, Dowling had been beaten on four passes that covered 131 yards. That wasn't necessarily an accident on Tech's part.
"He is aggressive over there and I think we ran by him a couple times," Hokies coach Frank Beamer said. "Then he started guarding deep a little bit and we threw one underneath him. I think we are getting to where we have the receivers to do that. If it's one-on-one, we have a pretty good chance."

Coale has career-best day vs. school that snubbed him
Saturday was especially sweet for Coale, who was not heavily recruited by Virginia. He was offered a scholarship to play lacrosse for the Cavaliers, as his older brother Kevin did, but not for football.
Coale finished with a career-high 135 yards on six catches Saturday, including his big plays over Dowling and a fingertip catch at the sideline that required him to also drag his toes - and required the referees to review it to be sure he was inbounds.(seepic of this photobelow)
That play was also an especially impressive play by Taylor, who was scrambling to his right to avoid a sack and threw a dart.
"It was one of the fastest throws I've ever seen him make, where only I could try to catch it," Coale said. "We just wanted to go downtown and make plays. We tried to do that early... and I think it helped the momentum."

WR Danny Coale
Early in the game, when Ryan Williams was still struggling to find running room, Danny Coale was coming up with big catch to continue drives for the Hokies against the team he grew up rooting for. Coale may have grown up a Wahoo, but he's all Hokie now. He had six of Tech's eight receptions and 135 of its 185 receiving yards.
His catches were either vital to his team at the time, like his 36 yard grab on 3rd and 17 on Tech's first drive or spectacular, like his fully-extended, toe-dragging catch late in the game. Coale had the best game of his <NOBR>career<OBR> when the Hokies needed it most. While the Wahoos focused on Jarrett Boykin, Coale was busy making them pay.

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Virginia Tech knew Saturday's rivalry game against Virginia was going to be a rough-and-tumble affair.
So the Hokies went to the air early and often to soften Virginia's underbelly and open up some room for the running game.
Redshirt sophomore flanker Danny Coale played his part in the plan to perfection, starting with the first play of the game.
Tyrod Taylor lofted a ball down the right sideline, and Coale made an adjustment, coming back and catching the ball as it fell over the shoulder of Virginia defensive back Ras-I Dowling.
That play was good for 41 yards, and was one of four times the Hokies successfully challenged Dowling in the first half.
They tried him again just three plays later, and Coale pulled that one down for a 36-yard gain and a first down on Virginia's 14-yard line.
"He's aggressive, so we threw by him a couple of times and he started guarding deep a little so we threw one underneath him," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. "I think we're getting to where we've got the type of receivers who can do that, and if it's one-on-one we've got a pretty good chance."
Coale had his biggest game of the season with six receptions, all of which went for first downs, and 135 receiving yards. It was the first 100-yard game of his career.
He also had the most spectacular catch of the game early in the fourth quarter.
Noticing that Taylor had scrambled to his right to avoid pressure, Coale cut off his route and rolled with the quarterback to provide a safety valve.
Taylor rifled a bullet toward Coale's outside shoulder, and Coale caught the ball as he leaned and dragged his feet in-bounds for a 10-yard gain and a first down on Virginia's 9.
That play set up Ryan Williams' third touchdown of the game and a 28-13 lead for the Hokies.
"He really flung it in there and that was one of the fastest throws I've ever seen Tyrod make," said Coale. "It was one of those balls where I knew I had to catch it and just did whatever I could to stay in-bounds. I wasn't sure where I was, but I knew it was close."
Taylor completed just three second-half passes, all of them to Coale, as the run game took over.
After just 78 first-half rushing yards, Virginia Tech rolled up 222 in the second half. Williams ran for 183 yards and four scores.
"You have to help each other out, and in order for the run to work the pass has to work," Coale said. "Whenever you can balance it out, you have success and we saw that today. We knew this was going to be a physical game, but we were just trying to take what they gave us, take our chances downfield, and luckily it worked out for us."
