Corrie Sanders to fight Nov. 12, 2007 on the undercard of Gairy St Clair vs. Cassius Baloyi.
If the Baloyi-St Clair match-up is a crossroads fight for the South African, Corrie Sanders will be at a dead end if he loses. Only two things motivate Sanders at this point in his career: winning and money. Without one or the other, Sanders will simply pack it in.
An anticipated fight with Evander Holyfield fell through when Holyfield unexpectedly landed a world title shot, against Sultan Ibragimov in Moscow in October, which left Berman to scour the world for a suitable opponent.
Five names are in the mix: Arthur Williams (43-14-1), Danny Batchelder (25- 5-1), Chazz Witherspoon (19-0), Chris Koval (23-3) and Chauncy Welliver (32-3-5).
Unusually, Sanders has opted for the gym rather than the golf course for his preparation. Harold Volbrecht oversees the boxing side of things and, for the first time, he's got former stablemate Sebastiaan Rothmann handling his fitness.
Rothmann knows all about Sanders cutting corners  they were in the gym together for more than 10 years  but he says Sanders is knuckling down and working hard.
Key to their plan is that Rothmann works on his anaerobic fitness, reckoning that at Sanders's age (41) it doesn't do too much good to do high-impact training.
Rothmann knows what he's talking about. Since quitting the ring he's become a personal trainer  among his clients is Claudia Henkel, the former Miss SA who's a darn sight better to look at than Sanders.
"I can't tell if Corrie's gonna make it. A guy can look a million dollars in the gym, but bomb when it gets to fight time. That's the only time I'll know ."
