I read that Heath Ledger died today of a suspected drug overdose. Here are the details...NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

He most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan - as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Knight," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theatre at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and co-starred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, 'You're crazy,' my parents were like, 'Come on, you have to eat."'

Associated Press Sara Kugler contributed to this report.

A very clear example of how "The system" can chew people up and spit them out. The whole myth of happiness through fame is laid bare. Happiness can only be found through truth, and Hollywood is the antithesis of that.

I agree a lot of Hollywood stars suffer from "Poor little rich girl" problems. Wake up in the morning and have to haul bags of cement in a construction site or drive cab for 12 hours a day. They don't know what a problem is...

I wouldn't be surprised if he died of AIDS. I'm fed up with our homosexual dominated media. The biggest and most disgusting change of all in the Cultural Marxist, permanent social and demographic revolution shoved down our throats for the past four-plus decades is the rise to power of homosexuals in all institutions. Ledger made his name as one of their poster boys. Good riddance.

Yeah, but Ledger was in no way gay. He was married to a woman (though later divorced), had a child and even the homosexuals never claimed he was one of 'em.

Probably he was a homosexual. He is quoted above saying he would not take a role he did not like. Obviously he liked the homo cowboy role. His wife left him. Why would that happen? The real reasons for his death will never be known unless they leak out somewhere on the net. Mainstream media protects its own.

There is no indication that he was gay.....he was simply an actor playing a part. Early reports are that it may have been drug related...either an accidental overdose or a suicide.

I agree with both johnnyboy and white is right, as a parent, my condolences go out to his daughter, but there does seem to be a disconnect with what are real problems of the working class vs. "the issues" that these celebrities face....or cannot face.....

They are saying now that his acting role in the upcoming Batman movie as the "joker" may have played a role in his depression. He had been complaining about how playing that part was causing him to lose sleep.

I prefer to remember this guy who played the part of eldest son Gabriel in the Mel Gibson movie of the revolutionary war "Patriot" than the disgusting role he played in Brokeback Mountain.

Absolutely!!! Let them toil on farm, run gas-line (pipe-fitting) or work in a coal mine for 1 day...they'd know all about what real work is like.

This is further proof that true happiness & peace cannot be found in material things, fame, etc. The answer is never in a bottle (pills, booze) either. In my humble estimation, only true peace is found through Jesus Christ...John 3:16 says it all.

It's sad yeah, but the guy was promoting homo cowboys. I mean cowboys are a strong American image. Those movies build associations in people's minds.
