Since 2005 Thundering Herd have started 5, 7, 5, 5, 4, 6, 5, 4, 6, 6, 6, 7, 6, 4 ,6, 5, 5, 5, 2, and 4 whites. This year, they are starting 5.
White head coach Tony Gibson is in his second season after six years as the defensive coordinator at NC State (another demographics-defying black-heavy program). According to his university bio, the most notable player he’s ever coached is Payton Wilson, now of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Sophomore WR Owen Sweeney is an up-transfer from Virginia Military Academy and has 10 catches for 128 yards through five games. TE Toby Payne is a program mainstay and has 19-147 so far in his final year of eligibility. Junior RB Judah Price is listed as fourth on the depth chart and has 16 carries for 83 yards as a scatback - he’s at least playing!
DE transfer Cole Funderburk cracked the starting lineup at an early age after one redshirt year at Wake Forest. Chmura (a Polish surname, apparently) and Lewis stuck with the program and ascended the depth chart.
Currently in the Sun Belt conference, Marshall seems to share the plight of every bottom-third D1 team: their top players transfer out, and they fill their roster with players from even tinier leagues (or in the best case scenario, scrape the bottom of P4 rosters by offering game time). They have 20 new transfers on the Ourlads depth chart compared to just 3 true freshmen.
I can’t really say that Tony Gibson has the team on the right track, at least until he finds just one single white player for his QB room. I also noted that the five starting linemen are black and the next six up are white. For now, Marshall reminds a Blundering Turd (h/t @Freethinker )
Starters:
WR: Owen Sweeney
TE: Toby Payne
DE: Cole Funderburk
DT: Cam Chmura
LB: Cannon Lewis
Backups:
RB: Judah Price
TE: Shawn Rouse
OL: Holden Grieger, Evan Ferguson, Logan Greer, Eli Kaufman, Jack Laird, Isaac Clary
LB: Chason Clark
