The 2025 Masters begins this Thursday. Last year I had to work through the entire week and missed most of it. This year, I don't have to. Really going to enjoy this one as work is slow and I don't have much to do this weekend, except play golf on Saturday, morning.
Story lines....
Tiger Woods will not be participating...
McIIroy going for the career slam...
Can Sheffler win again?
I will be following Jordan Spieth's progression from last year's surgery. He finished 12th last week.
Also, I will be following our local player form NC, JT Poston.
Supposed to be pretty good weather this week too!

Scheffler and McIlroy are easily the two betting favorites. Scheffler is a little off his A game so far this season, while Xander Schauffele who broke through with two major wins last year hasn't been playing well yet in '25. Jon Rahm is third in the betting odds, followed by Collin Morikawa, Schauffele, Bryson DeChambeau, young Swede Ludvig Aberg, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, and Hideki Matsuyama. DeChambeau really came on in the majors last year but who knows what form he's in as he plays LIV.

This may be Rory's best chance to win a green jacket since '18. He's been playing very well again this year and won The Players just last month, but over the past decade of failing in the majors Rory has accumulated mental baggage, as illustrated by his choke at the U.S. Open last year over the last few holes when he had the lead and it looked like he was finally going to end the drought. So many close calls since his last major win in 2014, can he finally get over the hump? I'll be rooting for him and if he does finally win The Masters and complete the career grand slam it'll be as popular a victory as any, surpassed only by Nicklaus in '86 and perhaps Ben Crenshaw's unexpected win in '95 right after his lifelong swing coach had passed. The Augusta patrons went crazy when Sergio Garcia finally broke through and won a major there in 2017, same with Adam Scott in 2013; multiply that by about ten if Rory emerges the champion. I cherish this tournament and like Carolina Speed will be watching a lot of it, including all of the final two rounds.

Early scoring....
1. Rai -4 thru-8
2. Jaeger -3 thru-7
T3. Scheffler -2 thru 4
T3. Spieth -2 thru 3
T7. JT Poston -1 thru 8

I’m home for the day, kicked back watching the Masters. Scheffler with a bogey free -4. Rory is -3 through 9. This is going to be great tournament.

Rory was playing a great round until double bogeying 15 when his chip from off the green rolled into the water. It had also happened right before that to Patrick Cantlay, who in fact did it twice. McIlroy is still -2, still very early in the tournament, needs to shake it off.

Justin Rose is leading at -7, really strong leaderboard already. Usually there's at least an obscure player or two at or near the top but not today. I'd be happy to see Rose win it if McIlroy and Scheffler fall short. He's been right in the hunt a number of times and lost in a playoff to Sergio the year Garcia finally broke through with a major win.

Edit: As soon as I wrote the above Rory had another burp, on 17 and just like that went from four under to even par. Probably won't win the tournament now but there's still 54 holes to play.

I would to see Rory Mcllory get the grand slam as much as anybody, but I think he is now receiving the Tiger Woods treatment. Bad luck, his partner's slow play or crowd noise affected his play. Then he leaves and goes to the range and doesn't do an interview. It was just a bad reflection on him. It is as much the media's fault as it is Mcllory's. All he has to do is speak up. Hopefully, he has 3 more rounds to recover.

Justin Rose finishes his second round with the lead a -8. DeChambeau making a move is in second at -7 thru 13
McIIroy T-3 at -5.
Sheffler T-3 at -5.
Wouldn't bother me if McIIroy won, but if Spieth can't get into contention, I'll be pulling for Scheffler to win a third Green Jacket.

Rory bouncing back from the two late doubles yesterday in a huge way, he's -6 today through 15, just two strokes behind Rose whose finished his round. DeChambeau is second at -7, Viktor Hovland like Rory is -6, with a bunch of others within striking distance. This is setting up to be another fantastic Masters.

Yes indeed! I watched some of Terrell Hatton's play today. I believe he could be the dark horse. Love his fiery play. Seems like a tough guy.
Looking forward to what shakes out Sunday afternoon! So many players in the hunt for the coveted Green Jacket!

Rory goes birdie eagle the first two holes and now leads at -9. DeChambeau made an incredible birdie putt on the first hole and is tied with Rose for second at -8. The third round has barely started and looks to be a memorable one.

Got home from playing just in time to see McIIroy's chip in eagle. DeChambeau on the no. 2 Par 5 in two. Saturday and Sunday is going to be awesome.

The course is biting back, lots of bogeys including one by Rory on the par five 8th. He still has a three shot lead playing the ninth.

After a lull in the middle of the round, Rory has gotten red hot again. His eagle at 15 was a demonstration of golf at the absolute very highest level. He's now at -12, six under on the day, with a four stroke lead playing 16.

Man oh man what a day of golf! Bryson birdies 15, 16 and 18 (including holing a nearly impossible long putt on 18) to get to -10 and will face off against Rory in the final group just two shots behind him. This Masters could not have been scripted any better so far. The two most popular players going at it in a rematch of the last round of the '24 U.S. Open, in which DeChambeau started off the with the lead, Rory ran him down and took a two shot lead only to cough it up and lose as Bryson made an up and down for the ages on the final hole. Bryson the seemingly unstoppable force of nature against the great Rory McIlroy, trying to finally win the career grand slam.

The winner of the Masters almost always comes from the final group. Canadian Corey Connors would seem to be the only other player with a shot to catch the two front runners. I can't wait for the final round!

Just an epic putt from Bryson on 18!

The leaderboard is very tight now. If Rory slips there's a bunch of world class players nipping at his heels. Rory and Bryson currently playing 9 and both have good birdie opportunities:

Rory -12
DeChambeau -9
Aberg -9
Rose -9
Reed -8
Conners -8
Scheffler -7

Update: Rory birdies 9 and goes to -13, one under on the front nine after double bogeying the first hole. Bryson pars, Rory goes to the second nine with a four shot lead.
