A Preference is now a Bias when race is concerned

Sorry to put everyone's blood pressure up but I stumbled across this today: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2487684/Does-online-dating-reveal-racist.html It seems that a simple Preference is now a prejudice or bias when race is concerned.

Richard Kilty 2014 World Indoor 60 Meters Champ 6.49 and 10.01

Just watched a YouTube clip of the 60m final from the BBC and the commentator (looked like Paula Radcliffe) said he didn't have a natural talent but only a talent for bringing his best on the day. This is the way these people are rationalizing Kilty's win.

Scholarly paper debunking Jon Entine's Taboo

Thanks for posting this. Unfortunately the paper is a bit disappointing because all it seems to say is: Athletic performance cannot be labeled a race-related phenomenon because race not a valid genetic or biological determinant. That may satisfy a few academics (despite the author not being a...

    2013 Outdoor Season

Thanks WL for the European link. Also the IAAF has now posted Kilty's time. But the British public is being kept in the dark - neither the BBC Sport web site or the Athletics Weekly site have made any comment about Kilty's run; nor that he is now one of the top ten UK 100/200 performers of all...

    2013 Outdoor Season

10.10 is a big improvement from 10.23 - in the range of Gemili's 10.05. IAAF have not posted it yet. WL, do you have a link for this result?

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

For a fit sprinter a pulled hamstring is almost always a result of a lack of relaxation. It was likely Lemaitre lost his concentration, tried too hard, and did not have his typically great finish. He could have finished fourth.

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

To say CL was lucky to reach the finals is simply selecting what is lucky and what is not. I think the other seven finalist are lucky not be have been banned or caught. Viacaut and Zahng too. Viacaut's gluts and quads have doubled in size in a year and we all know about China!

WL - Thanks for all of your great comments over the years at the various T&F threads. They are very much appreciated. The definition of an intelligent man? Someone who agrees with you. :icon_lol:

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

We are all making the assumption that improvement is linear - meaning that an athlete WILL improve year over year up to some kind of limitation factor. But looking at IAAF progression charts for a number of athletes this is rarely the case. What I am saying is that ALL athletes have lulls and...

    Is Bolt on Drugs?

With today's news here is the IAAF top twenty all-time 100m sprinter list edited in RED with those who, to my knowledge, have been tested positive or very strongly implicated. Could someone with more knowledge edit this further. It makes Bolt's performance even more suspect. LeMaitre's 9.92...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

This result is interesting: Collins, who CL made look like a girl in the final 30 meters of their last meeting, did well with a headwind against some tough opposition. RACE 2 27 JUN 2013 WIND -0.5 POS ATHLETE COUNTRY MARK 1 Asafa POWELL JAM 10.06 2 Kim...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

The better way to compare times is not to convert using wind speed and Basic Time charts but to compare the results of the other competitors with their PB or season's best. This way track conditions, temperature, humidity (plus a typical positive wind) are all taken into consideration. The...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

More on the wind in Christophe's race: Kemar Hyman who was 5th in the race in 10.22 ran a legal 9.95 last year. All indications are that 9.98 was a legitimate time.

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

I agree elispeedster that was not a typical headwind of 2.9m/s. Look at the long jump and triple jump results and the wind was swirling from one direction to the other. It was simply the most amazing sprint performance I have ever seen.

    Just run, baby!

Jimmy: You are 100% right; and there are a 100 different ways to add to your comments. One interesting way is to look at “newâ€￾ athletic events which have no culture and therefore no preconceived ideas for a self-fulfilling prophesy to get started. One of the newest “athleticâ€￾ sports...

Christophe Lemaitre "White Lightning" 9.92 and 19.80!

I'll try and put a positive spin on this: Christophe was 0.37 off his PB. The 2nd to 5th runners were 0.19, 0.42, 0.44 and 0.42 off their PBs (from the IAAF web site) for an average of 0.37. Recorded wind speed is not necessarily accurate.

    Boston Marathon Bombing

It is feasible for the glass to blow outwards - if the door to the store was open when the bomb exploded. In that case air from a blast would rush into the store, the pressure inside the closed store area would increase more rapidly than the exterior air pressure direct from the blast which...

Not if the timer also fired the gun. Then the time would be 8.1 - 0.24 or 7.86. But often the timer (coach) will start the watch when the runner moves. Then the timer's and runner's combined reaction times need to be added to compare to electronic times.
