The U.S. Open will be played beginning Thursday at Oakmont Country Club in Plum Pennsylvania for the 10th time in its history. Plum is a suburb of Pittsburgh.
I wouldn't look for many low scores as Oakmont is long and difficult with narrow fairways, so accurate driving will be a premium.
The early favorites include defending Champion Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, and Rory McIIroy. McIIroy +9, didn't make the cut at last week's RBC Canadian Open.
I often wonder if some of these guys tank in these tournaments leading up to the Majors, so they don't have to spend a week in a tournament location before the next Major. Did McIIroy just want to get a couple of days practice in as a tune up? He certainly doesn't need the money as he makes more in endorsements than he does playing. Only 10 of the top 30 golfers in the world played The Canadian Open. Only 3 in the top 10, numbers 9 and 10, so it wasn't the most competitive field. He should have easily made the cut if not been in contention.
Looking forward to this weekend.
Happy Father's Day to all the father's on Sunday!
I am a blessed father of 5!

I agree with you, Carolina Speed, about the scores. I think the winning score will be over par. Happy Father's Day to you. I have 7 children of my own, 4 girls & 3 boys.

Thanks Booth!
The opening round proved to be a tough trech as only 10 of the 156 players were under par.
J.J. Spaun, with only one PGA Tournament win and one previous appearance in the US Open where he was cut, has the lead at -4.
None of the top 10 ranked golfers in the world were under par.

Brooks Koepka played well and is in a tie for third. John Rahm is in at -1. Jordan Spieth in contention at even par. The favorites, Scheffler, DeChambeau, and McIIroy are +3, +3 and +4 respectively.

1. JJ Spaun -4
2. T Lawrence -3
T3. B. Koepka -2
T3. S. Im -2
T6. B. Griffin -1
T6. J. Rahm -1
T11. J Spieth E
T49. S. Scheffler +3
T49. B. DeChambeau +3
T. 62 McIIroy +4

Carolina Speed, do you have any opinions on what happened to Dustin Johnson? He was a person who, at one time, was capable of winning any tournament he entered; now he acts like he doesn't want to be there.

Thanks for the updates, gents. I live ten miles from the course but unfortunately won't be able to watch much of it this year. The leaderboard in the second round so far is nondescript, but the PGA Championship started the same way last month. Hopefully some of the big names will get in the mix over the weekend.

Hey Booth. Yes, I have my opinion, but it's probably not worth much. I believe golfers like Dustin Johnson, Rory McIIroy, as well as others who have immense talent become complacent with themselves. Why, because once they've reached the top and have made $200 million before age 30, there's nothing left to play for. Again, IMO. The players today are spoiled rotten and just don't have the drive to be the very best they can be. I'm not a Tiger Woods fan, but I'll give him credit. He wanted to be the GOAT! He was almost there until injuries and dumb decisions caught up with him. IMO he's still behind Nicklaus and Hogan.
Now, we have Scottie Scheffler. What happens with him. Another immensely talented golfer. Maybe the best since Woods. However, it remains to be seen how much he wants to contend with the greatness of the Nicklaus's, the Hogan's and the Woods of the golfing world.
Scheffler makes around $30 million annually from endorsements alone. He's made almost $80 million already on The PGA Tour. That's third all time behind only McIIroy and Woods, and or Mickelson. Phil is not included anymore, because of his affiliation with LIV.
He's only 28 years old! It remains to be seen how good Scheffler really wants to be.
I would love to see Scheffler win 14, 15 or more majors to take some of the shine off Tiger, but that's a tall task! All we can do is watch and wait to see if another all-time great golfer emerges. I would love to see another Nicklaus type of golfer during my lifetime, but I doubt it will ever happen.
Times have changed.

To be fair, if I had $100,000,000+ in the bank, I wouldn’t be grinding and hitting thousands of balls per day. You have to be a special type of crazy. Like Bill Gates is not satisfied with $billions, he needs more and wants to kill as many people as possible.

None of the top ten ranked players are in serious contention going into the final round but it's still an interesting leaderboard. Sam Burns holds a one shot lead over Adam Scott and journeyman J. J. Spaun. Viktor Hovland is three shots back.

Scott is now 44 years old and will be the fan favorite tomorrow. His 2013 Masters win is his only major after great things were expected of him when he turned pro so this may be his final chance to win a second one. Hovland now ranks with Patrick Cantley as having the semi-dreaded title of "best player to never win a major," but he's still only 27 years old.

Hovland is the 14th ranked player in the world; Burns is 22nd; Scott is 42nd. Spaun is actually ranked 25th now as he's had a good year. He's supposedly a mixture of Filipino, Mexican and White, but looking at him most people would probably think he's black or at least partially black.

It would be great to see Scott win as he's a popular player, but if he doesn't I hope Hovland does.

I thought he was a Mexican with distant German ancestry since he was from LA.

Concerning the leader board I think it's wide open if somebody has a hot day tomorrow as even Scheffler who is +4 has a shot with a hot day tomorrow if the leaders fold.

I wasn't rooting for Spaun but he certainly earned the title, shooting 32 on the back nine while Burns, Scott, Hovland and just about everyone else struggled big time. A few players made mini-charges and five were tied for the lead at one point at one over par but Scotsman Robert MacIntyre ended up being the player Spaun had to beat, and he did so by holing a 64 foot birdie putt in the rain on the 18th.

Bad weather marred the third and fourth rounds but it still ended up being another memorable Open at Oakmont even if it was with a mostly different cast of contenders than expected.

Wyndam Clark has been suspended from Oakmount Country for damaging some lockers after his second round. I don't know what is going on with today's golfers; they are throwing more clubs and cursing more on the course than I can remember. Rory is saying he has earned the right to do what he wants to. I knew by the way he played the third round, he didn't want to be there.
