According to the NY Times - "all the news that's fit to print" - the South Carolina Governor can appoint someone until the end of his term. He was up for re-election in November. Presumably there'll have to be a primary to get a new candidate to make it legal.

Now that I've watched the entire second half of the USA v Australia match I don't think the US is going to go far at this WC. They looked pretty vulnerable and somewhat lacking in discipline in that second half. Maybe the first match against Paraguay and the first half against Australia...
