AIR FORCE FOOTBALL COACH CRASHES AND BURNS

by J. B. Cash

(10/26/05) Age does strange things to a man. As an example we have the head football coach of the Air Force Academy, 67-year old Fisher DeBarry. DeBarry is at the center of a controversy over his remarks concerning the racial make-up of his football team. DeBerry said Tuesday his football program needs more black athletes because "they run extremely well."

"I just want to recruit speed; we need to find speed as much as anything," DeBerry said when asked if he believed there was anything wrong in saying he wanted to recruit more black athletes because they are faster. "The black athlete, statistically, from program to program, seems to have an edge as far as speed is concerned."

DeBerry was discussing Saturday's 48-10 Mountain West Conference loss to Texas Christian. "It was very obvious to me the other day that the other team (TCU) had a lot more African-American players than we did and they ran a lot faster than we did," DeBerry said Tuesday. "It just seems to be that way. African-American kids can run very well. That doesn't mean that Caucasian kids and other descents can't run, but it's very obvious to me that they run extremely well.

"Their defense had 11 African-American kids on their team and they were a very good defensive football team. So that's exactly what I was talking about." Asked whether Air Force needs more black players to become a better team, DeBerry said, "Have you looked at the NFL rosters lately? Have you looked at most college rosters? Enough said."

DeBarry must be first faulted for bringing race into a discussion of sports. That is always a recipe for disaster, just ask Rush Limbaugh or Paul Hornung. But really, what can one think when the coach of a football team complains that he does not have enough of a particular race on his roster? Did DeBarry just notice this after 22 years as a coach? Was he watching the game and it suddenly hit him: "Wow! TCU has a lot of African-Americans on their team, and we don't, maybe that's why we're losing!"

Let us address his comment directly. "Blacks run well." Yes they do. Some of them. Others are not so fast. DeBarry is clearly expressing a stereotype. He tried to backpedal saying White kids run fast too but if that was the case, why the need for black players? Thus he is not concerned about recruiting the fastest players, or else he would have said something like, "We need to get faster, we need to find faster kids, if it means looking elsewhere or looking harder, we have to do it". No, he only said that he wanted black players.

We know why he said it that way. He doesn't mean he wants faster players. He wants black players. Many white players run fast. But when they do they are still considered inferior because of other non-quantitative measurements like hip-flexibility, or quick-twitch athleticism, or real-time responsiveness. Or any number of other unmeasureable but "black-only" athletic qualities that nearly all white coaches ascribe to blacks. Then when they get their nearly all-black roster they still lose but they will be safe behind the facade of the Caste System and thus insulated from criticism.

Paul Hornung stepped in a similar pile of dung when he stated that Notre Dame needed to lower its academic entrance qualifications so that they could recruit more blacks. Hornung felt that the Notre Dame football program had fallen on hard times because it was too hard for black athletes to get into ND due to the standards they set for their students. Hornung's solution: lower the bar so ND could get the dumber black players who would of course be better than the white players because he feels, like DeBarry, that any black player is better than most, if not all, white players.

Notre Dame did no such thing and they got better. Real fast. And in fact they got whiter. They switched to a white QB (Brady Quinn), their best wide receiver is white (Jeff Samardzija), and they feature a Div. I-A rarity, a play-making white defensive back (Tommy Zbikowski). But the most important place they got whiter was at the head coaching position, replacing Tyrone Willingham with Charlie Weiss. So Notre Dame wisely ignored Hornung's idiotic advice and prospered.

Also questionable is whether faster is better. A player can run up and down the field faster than anybody else, but unless they make plays, what good are they? A coach should want his team to get smarter, he should want them to block better, tackle better, handle the ball better, catch, kick and throw better. All those things will make your team better than simply getting "faster".

Coaches always say, "you can't teach speed." Do you know why? Because that insinuates that if a team is losing it's not the coach's fault. Since speed is something un-teachable (hence un-coachable), if the team doesn't have it â€â€￾ don't blame the coach. A coach can say: "Hey, don't blame me, I coached them well! They just weren't good enough athletes."

Fisher BeBarry is simply making excuses for his team doing poorly and he does not want to suffer the consequences. His racial excuse is as cowardly as it is insulting. He knows that there will be little objection to his support of the Caste System so he uses it to cover for his own failings. Pretty pathetic. And this guy is coaching at a military academy!

The Air Force Academy is a special institution. It trains officers for the role of leading and operating the number one military air force in the world. As such the role of the Air Force Academy is too prepare young men (and women too, I guess) to defend the United States from attack. And any attack on the U.S. would certainly include an aerial assault.

We're not talking Notre Dame here. Were not talking any old college that can fudge the requirements, fake the work, and turn a blind eye to a group of students that are only at the university to help make it money through profits from sports revenue.

We are talking issues of life and death, issues of safety and national security. Fisher Debarry is insinuating that the Air Force needs to add to its student body those kinds of black athletes that make up the rosters of the NFL and most college rosters. The kind of people that do the sort of things that Minnesota Viking players do on Lake Minetonka, or University of Miami players do on recruiting trips. If that is the Air Force he sees the United States as having merely so he can win some football games then he is a fool and maybe even a traitor.

And Fischer DeBarry IS a traitor. Perhaps not to the United States but certainly to his people. What kind of a man runs down the qualities of his own race? Why would he not be proud that the Air Force Academy, nearly alone out of all Division I-A schools, usually has nearly all-white rosters and has prospered with them?

It's not as if the Air Force Academy is routinely humbled by every other school full of black athletes. In fact the opposite is the case. He has run a very successful program for years. We all know that he is at a disadvantage compared to almost all other schools. Not only are the academic standards high at his school, which would reduce the number of quality athletes of all races anyway, as good athletes always tend to have lower grades, but the tremendous demands of life as a student at a military academy limit the ability of a kid to practice and train.

Yet Air Force competes well in its conference and is competitive against the bigger schools as well. Like any program they have down years and this is certainly one of them, but after having all those successful seasons to complain that a less successful team is caused by its racial make-up? That's ridiculous!

You'll notice he didn't make those types of comments after beating a largely black UNLV team 42-7 a couple of weeks ago. Did the UNLV coach complain that he didn't have enough white players?

Sadly, the media slant on the issue is the same as it always is on race. The only issue is whether black people feel they have been insulted by being complimented about their athletic abilities! Yes the media is interviewing black sports figures to find out how insulted they are by this compliment.

Why is there no question as to how white people feel about this horrible and embarrassing racial slight? It's because white people do not exist as a "people." The white race has been wiped out of the collective consciousness of the media. There is no white race as far as ESPN or Sports Illustrated is concerned. We do not exist and therefore cannot be insulted. Since we have no existence there is no spokesman, no one to ask.

Who would the media interview concerning an injustice to white people anyway? There are no spokesmen for white people, because to acknowledge that there is someone to speak for us is to indicate that there is an "us." And that they will not do. It is the unspoken media taboo, the untouchable topic â€â€￾ the group interests of white people.

But white people do have group interests. You know it and I know it and many people are awakening to it. The longer it is hidden and the more it is ignored, then the more the pressure builds up. Eventually it will reach the point that it cannot be ignored and it will burst like a broken levy and it will flood the cities and streets of America.

Until then we wait. We, the greatest warrior people on the planet, must be content to sit and suffer the slights of an aging old man and the rest of the sports establishment. We must bear the indignity of being treated as inferiors. We, who have built the modern world, must watch as it is being overrun and wonder: how long must we wait until justice is done?

Another great article JB! It is sick to see this happen, and the way the reporting is framed. I'm glad I don't have ESPN on my TV.

Navy wins with mainly White players including a 27-24 win over Air Force this year. Last year Navy was 7-2[they are 4-2 this year]. Air Force beat Tyrone Willingham's once proud Washington Huskies this year 20-17. I once had respect for DeBarry but not anymore. Paul Johnson took a Navy football program that was sinking[in fact sunk] and made them winners again with White players. DeBarry should step down as Head Coach of Air Force and run his local chapter of the NAACP. GO NAVY!!!

BYU beat Air Force 62-41! BYU is one of the Whitest Teams in college football. So maybe what Air Force football really needs are more Mormons

Something I pointed out a few days ago is that during the TCU-Air Force game, TCU had 2 whites starting on defense. It wasn't 11 blacks as DeBerry said. I wonder why he didn't claim to have seen the 2 whites they were starting? Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Army is not very good this year but yesterday they beat Air Force. A very white Army team not having one of there best seasons still won! DeBerry should step down. Anyone who says anything negative about White Males has lost my respect. By the way without White Males there would be missing 98% of the pilots in the Air Froce!
