Doing a very rough and inexact count of this years starters, I come up with about 172 white starters in the NFL this year. Last year, based on Don's team reports I found about 175. I split the difference on last years numbers when there would be either six or seven starters on a team, calling it 6.5. Also, I don't believe Don counted fullbacks as starters, and if we add fullbacks into the mix thats probably a gain of a couple of starters, in Miami, San Francisco, and Denver. I also don't count Derrick Smith as a starter in San Diego as he's filling in for a suspended player I believe. Factoring in the ups and downs its basically unchanged from last year, but we have new white starting tight ends in Miami, Atlanta, and Seattle, and Carlson and Fassano look to be good yardage makers.

I monitored the starters for the following teams:

Green Bay - 10 (same as last year)
Giants - 7 (all offense)
Cleveland - 6 (will be 7 once Jurevicious is healthy)
Minnesota - 6 (up 1)
Colts - 5 or 6 (didn't see the defense introduced but I think they had 1 whitey)
Bears - 5 or 6 depending on how you classify Kruetz
Dallas - 5
Washington - 4 (should go up after Campbell is benched)

Seems about the same as last year thought the Colts went from 7-8 to 5-6 whiteys.

I don't consider Olin white. He is half white though.
Indy has DE Josh Thomas who is not a starter but rotates in quite a bit for them. They also have SS Matt Giordanno who gets a little bit of time and rookie LB Jordan Senn, but no starters on defense.Edited by: Bear Backer

Bad news about Indy. They had 8 starters the year they won the Super Bowl and 7 last year. Now they are down to 5.

Good thing they won't make the playoffs this year.

Do only the starters get significant playing time? It seems pathetic that a team will field a starting squad that is only 1/4 white, unless of course during the game whites see considerable minutes on the field.

Thanks for the heads up Liverlips. I guess I'll be rooting for Green Bay this year. A Green Bay v. Buffalo Super Bowl would be sweet.

Even after being a Caste member for a couple years now, I still can not believe what has happened to football. I used to be the biggest 'Skins fan, live and die by them, now I have no team, just whoever has the most whites. It's insane and hopefully, one day before my boys are grown, things will have changed back to the way it was. Not holding my breath, though.

I count them as starters. Thing is though, a lot of teams don't use the fullback much, some hardly at all, so in a sense a white starting at FB on those teams makes the overall number of white starters look better than what the situation is, akin to how punters, kickers and long snappers make the overall number of white players in the league appear higher than what it is as far as the positions that count. Fullback is on the road to extinction a little more every season.Edited by: Don Wassall
