From fightnews.com:

It was announced today that WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (36-2, 22 KOs) will face power punching fan favorite Edison Miranda (33-4, 29 KOs) on January 9th at the Bördelandhalle in Magdeburg, Germany. It will be the first defense for Stieglitz, who dethroned Karoly Balzsay in August. Miranda is no stranger to Germany, having broken Arthur Abraham's jaw in an epic showdown in September 2006. The card was officially announced today.

Miranda backed out of the fight because he has the flu. Universum is now searching for a new opponent.

Good show by Stieglitz in his first title defense. I wonder if he'll be fighting Miranda next?

Stieglitz retains IBF title

WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (39-2, 23 KOs) scored a clear twelve round unanimous decision over Enrique Ornelas (30-7, 20 KOs) on Saturday night at the Freiberger Arena in Dresden, Germany. Stieglitz brought the fight to Ornelas early, but Ornelas got untracked as the bout progressed. In round seven, Ornelas had his best round as he punished the champion, who was starting to get busted up. However, Stieglitz adjusted in round eight and was completely back in control by round nine. The fighters went toe-to-toe in an exciting twelfth round. Scores were 117-111 on all cards.

The win was a measure of revenge for Stieglitz, who suffered one of his two losses to Ornelas' brother Librado Andrade. It was also Stieglitz' first fight under trainer Dirk Dzemski, after longtime trainer Torsten Schmitz signed with the rival Sauerland stall.

New Stieglitz opponent named

The new opponent for WBO world champion Robert Stieglitz (39-2, 23 KOs) in his upcoming title defense is a very dangerous fighter. After the cancellation of the unification duel against WBA champion Dimitri Sartison due to injury, the SES champion Stieglitz will now face the southpaw contender Khoren Gevor (31-5, 16 KOs). "We were very lucky in finding a new opponent on such short notice,"Â￾ promotor Ulf Steinforth said. The Armenian born and WBO# 11 rated Gevor was originally scheduled to fight against the current European champion Matthew Macklin on April 16 in Manchester in a WBA eliminator fight. But Macklin had called off the battle at the beginning of last week. "Khoren Gevor is in full training and prepared for the 12 rounds,"Â￾ Steinforth added.

For the past five years the 31 year old Gevor has been in top rankings. In 2007 he bravely fought against Arthur Abraham in a fight for the IBF middleweight world championship and lost by a surprising knockout in round eleven. Up til that moment he was slightly ahead on the scorecards. Another close fight was the battle against Felix Sturm in 2009 at the Nürburgring when the decision win for Sturm was highly discussed. These comparisons are making the upcoming fight highly interesting. Felix Sturm had recently said that he could imagine a possible challenge with Robert Stieglitz.

"I have only fought twice against a southpaw. That were Karoly Balzsay and Yuri Barashian. Both fights were very hard but I have defeated them both. I will also be the winner after the fight against Khoren Gevor though I haven't got a tactical guideline for him yet. But I still have some days left,"Â￾ world champion Robert Stieglitz commented. His trainer Dirk Dzemski was a southpaw during his boxing career so he can be very helpful and prepare Stieglitz for this upcoming challenge.

The challenger will arrive in Magdeburg today and will be present at the press conference on Monday (at 11:30 am, Modehaus Papenbreer, Breiter Weg 126, 39104 Magdeburg). Also in action will be female world champion Ramona Kühne, who will be defending her WIBF, WBO and WBF super featherweight titles against Michelle Larissa Bonassoli. SAT.1 "ranboxen"Â￾ will televise live from the Magdeburger Bördelandhalle on April 9.

Stiegiltz wins by DQ

WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (40-2, 23 KOs) kept his belt with a ten round disqualification win over Khoren Gevor (31-6, 16 KOs) on Saturday night at the famed Bördelandhalle in Magdeburg, Germany. In a very good action fight, Stieglitz was the sharper puncher, cutting Gevor cut over the left eye in round three and regularly beating the challenger to the punch. As always, Gevor showed great toughness and determination. Things became very rough in tenth round. After Gevor was deducted a point by referee Manfred Küchler, both fighters crashed down hard to the canvas after wrestling and Stieglitz emerged with a cut over his right eye. Gevor was then disqualified. Extremely upset, Gevor later threw some punches at Küchler and was removed by security.

[h=1]Abraham dethrones Stieglitz, wins WBO 168lb belt
[/h] By Karl Freitag
In his third attempt, former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (35-3, 27 KOs) won a version of the super middleweight title, dethroning WBO champion Robert Stieglitz (42-3, 23 KOs) by unanimous decision on Saturday night at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany.
Stiegtitz started well, outboxing Abraham and piling up an early lead. The pattern of the bout was established in round four. Stieglitz did most the work, but Abraham landed the harder and more effective shots. Abraham did a lot of mugging, dropping his hands and shrugging as he tried to goad Stieglitz into trading. The outgunned Stieglitz showed a lot of grit, often attacking with sharp flurries of punches. The champion’s face was getting pretty busted up by round ten and referee Joe Cortez stopped the action and called in the ring doctor, who OK’d the bout to continue. Abraham was relatively unmarked. Most rounds were close and the decision was still in doubt as the fight went to the judges. Scores were 116-112, 116-112, 115-113 for Abraham.
