He is still around and ran some outdoor meets last spring. He never did return to his form from 2002. If he ever got serious about his training, he could be one of the top sprinters. He is the only white man to break 6.50 sec in the 60m.

That is actually not true SteveB.The 110 meter hurdler for Canada also broke 6.50 in the 60 meters.I am at a loss for his name but he was a incredible hurdler and could have possibly been a sub 10 sprinter. One thing that impressed me about Nagel was how many times he ran 6.5 or under. He seemed to do it almost effortlessly. He just could never maintain his speed over 100 meters. His lifetime best was a 10.13 at altitude.I hope he finds a way to get back to form if it's not too late. What a explosive starter he was!Very similar to Armin Harry.Edited by: white lightning

I wasn't aware that there was another white guy who broke 6.50. Thanks for the correction, WL.

Morne Nagel is finally back!He has had a few bad seasons but is looking great. He barely lost a 60 meters finals race in Moscow by 1/100 of a second.Nagel ran a 6.61 to finish 2nd.He looks like he might be finally rounding back into his 2002 form where he was the number one indoor sprinter in the world. This is great news as he has really struggled with injuries and inconsistant times.Good luck to him this season!

Nagel was a double winner last night at a meet in Germany.
He won the 60m in 6.60 and the 200m in 20.73.
Both are good times, especially the 200m time. He has the fastest indoor 200m time (20.63)in the world this season.
Nagel has always been a top indoor sprinter, but has never done much outdoors.
Maybe this will be the year where he finally makes break-through in the outdoor season.
Let's hope so.

I'm so happy that he has finally returned to his form of 2002.He was the best sprinter in the world indoors and ran high 6.4 times like clockwork.Nagel has just never seemed to put it all together as you said.I would love to see him have some success this summer as his career is slowly winding down.He used to train with a guy named Clinton Venter a long time ago.I'm curious who he trains with now.Good luck to Nagel!

6.48!?! Wow, it's hard to believe this guy hasn't broken 10.00. What kind of curse have the track gods put on the white man?

Morne opened his outdoor season in South Africa with 10.38 and 20.59 wins in the 100m and 200m.

I'm really impressed with Nagel. That 200 time is no slouch for a season opener.Nagel has the South African Record over 200 meters and hopefully he can get back down close to that this season.

On a side note,I'm a little dissapointed that Johan Wissman has switched to the 400 meters. He was a very solid 200 meters guy and I thought that he might come close to a flat 20 in the next couple of years. He won the silver medal in last years Outdoor Euro Champs.Oh well,I wish him well anyway. The 400 meters will continue to be a white dominated sprint. We could use some more guys in the 100 & 200 meters.

Nagel ran a very nice time of 20.32 yesterday in the 200m, along with a somewhat average 10.50 100m.
Given how fast he is in the 60m, it is really surprising that he runs better at 200m than at 100m.

Perhaps he's changed in the last few years. From the above post by Guests it appears that he hasn't ran under 6.6 for the 60M since 2002.

Years ago a couple of friends and I agreed that if a white man ever won the Olympic 100m gold again we would drop whatever we were doing and have dinner at Ruth Chris steak house sparing no expense. We should have agreed to celebrate as lavishly when (not if) we finally get under 10 sec.

I wonder why Nagel is performing better in the 200 than 100.

Solid 20.32 for Nagel

Young Talkmore Nyongani in Tshwane
(Mark Ouma)

Competing on home turf Morne Nagel stamped his authority on the 200m where he prevailed in a time of 20.32. Such was the pace on the home straight that Sherwin Vries (20.60), Christiaan Krone (20.66), Leigh Julius (20.71), Snyman Prinsloo (20.80), Sergio Mullin (20.90) posted their fastest times this season. Earlier on Nagel (10.50) narrowly lost to Vries (10.48) in the shorter 100m.

"This was a great relief for me after my sluggish start in the 100m that cost me the race. If I can get my start right I think I can improve my national record (20.11) at the national championships," says Nagel.

I was wondering if anyone has any theories on this:
I'm perplexed as too why whites can do so well at 60 meters (going sub 6.5) and go sub 20 in 200 meters. Greeks also won at 200 meters in the Olympics (gold and bronze in 2000) So why haven't any whites been able to go sub 10 in the 100 meter.

You would think that at 60 meters you have to be very quick to start, quickness being a skill whites are very good at, and that it is long enough where you have to also maintain that world class explosiveness. 200 meters is about the endurance to maintain good explosivness over a longer stretch. It perplexes me why 100 meters is the one distance from 800 meters down that the white man can't seem to break through at.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

I've actually just put together my own theory:

Whites have better starting reflexes (quick burst) than blacks which is why whites do better over 10 yards and often 20 yards at the NFL combine and can often be at the elite level at 60 meters.
The elite blacks have a "slightly" higher top speed (defined fast twitch muscles and explosiveness) which can be virtually maintained over 100 meters, and will pass the whites usually inside of 60 meters.
Yet whites are just as good or have slightly better explosive endurance at 400 meters and 800 meters when pacing themselves and can sometimes sneak some big wins in at 200. Maybe if scandals like the Balco one keep away drug cheats in track. America will groom whites to dominate at 400 and 800 meters. Jeremy Wariner (who I definitely think is clean of PEDs by me looking at his build) may open the door for this.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

I think you're right. And the 200 requires one run a curve which is more based on technique than raw ability, so the white athletes probably gain back another tenth of a second because they tend to be better in the technical aspects of sports. When you look at the sprints, very slight differences count big.

I agree that white people have better reaction time and reflexes, but I do not think black people have a better top end speed. By 60 meters in to a sprint, it is physically impossible to be at top speed after that. Because whites have proven to have superior fast twitch muscle such as in shot put, high jump, and triple jump; blacks probably only excel SLIGHTLY in what is called speed endurance. This is the ability to not sslow down. I say slightly because of runners such as Jeremy Wariner that prove speed endurance is not only for black athletes.

Morne ran the 400m at a meet in Germany over the wkend.
His time wasn't very good - 48.01 - but at least he's still running.

considering Carl Lewis only ran a 47.01 in the 400m, I would say thats not bad.
