It appears that Szczur has given a verbal committment to sign a contract with the Chicago Cubs, forgoing an NFL career to play major league baseball. (Twitter link)

Unfortunate, to say the least. He would have been a great talent. Also unusual is that he signed with the Cubs, the same club that signed Jeff Samardzjia away from a promising NFL career.

Best of luck to Matt anyway.

Edit: At least it appears that he's a heck of a ballplayer. After being drafted in the fifth round in 2010, Matt hit .347/.414/.465 in 116 plate appearances in single-A ball. Baseball America had him ranked as the Cubs' seventh best prospect in 2010, so at least he has a promising future in the MLB. Hopefully he'll get a shot to play center field, as his athleticism would play well there, and it's quickly becoming a Caste position in baseball.Edited by: PhillyBirds
