Alena Nevmerzhitskaya of Belarus has already ran a legal 11.05 this year. I'm hoping she can go sub 11 tommorow on the same day Lemaitre goes sub 10. What a great day that would be! Good luck to both of them.

This won't rival Lemaitre's sub 10, but on this historic day I'm also happy to see David Gillick ran a European leading 44.95 in Barcelona today.

One hell of a scary start list for that 100m in Paris. Quality top to
bottom. Not one slouch in the bunch. Christophe will need to be at his best, and no one will be
waiting for him if he sits in the blocks this time!

In general, it looks like an exciting meet--with a lot of the big names
from the watch list I posted yesterday. Christophe is in the 100.
The 400 has Wariner and my hunch for the next Wariner, Jonathan Borlee.
The 800 has a slew of talents, Andrew Wheating, Nick Symmonds, Bram
Som, and the Pole Lewandowski all chasing the Sudanese superstar Kaki.
Even more than Bolt will hopefully drag Christophe to a great time, I
think that Kaki could drag the 800 guys to some personal bests, because
he, like the Kenyan Rudisha, takes it out fast from the start, so
Wheating, Symmonds, Brom, and Lewandowski will have to run hard or they
will fall too far back to use their kicks.

So we have three exciting events to watch!

Jared Connaghton won his race today over in Europe. The time was descent but it's still a little frustrating that he has not taken it to a higher level. He has very good form. I don't know if it's him not training properly, injuries or if some of the blame should go to his coach. He should have been further along in his progression than he is. Congrats on a nice win though.

Pretty good race coming up in Italy tommorow although it's alrready tommorow there. The line up the July 14th in the 100 has some big names. Let's see what Collio can do!

don't want to be a spoiler W/L, but 10.15 may end up as his PB when we look back later. Everyone has to peak somewhere.

It's far from a bad effort though! How many of us would love to tell our grandkids we were 10.15 runners (my hand's up).

Collio's got some opposition there

What are you talking about? Collio ran a wind legal 10.06 last summer. That is his p.b. He also just ran a 10.16 two weeks ago. We will see if he can bring his A Game again.

Oh ok. Sorry about that. Yeah JayConn has been a let down for sure. It's similar to Michael LeBlanc. Now that he has graduated from Syracuse, I wonder if he will still run. He is either taking the summer off or giving up track. It almost seems like the Canadian Jinx. Macrozonaris, Connaughton and Leblanc. At least Jared and Michael still have some time left if they continue sprinting. Both are under 25 years of age.

It's too bad the way the Aussie Season works out. We rarely get to see their sprinters running in Europe. Sally McClellan is an exception and she is amazing.

I wish I could expect more from our guys but I really don't see Matt or Aaron dipping under their PB's.. I don't think they get enough international competition to test/improve themselves. Then it's like they're overawed by the occasion.
They don't seem to go on with it.

I hope I'm wrong but I've seen it lots of times in the past.
Our long jumpers, Sally, Steve Hooker and Dannie Samuels (discus) can.
They can all hold their techniques under pressure.Edited by: mastermulti

Well we are less than a day away from Ramil Guliyev opening up his season. I know he raced once around a month ago but he was injured and didn't even finish the race. I sure hope he has healed. I imagine a very modest time in the high 20's to 21.00 range. No reason to have him push too hard too soon. It's exciting and scary at the same time. Good luck to Ramil.

Nice 800 meter. Still waiting on the final times, but the gang showed up well. No one could run with Kaki, but Som hung in well for a long time, Wheating came on very strong at the end, as did Lewandowski. Lewandowski will be disqualified for cutting over and running on the grass on the home straight, but it is, frankly, a sign of his speed. Grass is much slower than track, and yet he blew past people in his little illegal lane (which conferred only disadvantage, not advantage). Symmonds couldn't keep up with Lewandowski and Wheating.

So...overall scouting report:
Lewandowski--very promising youngster, showed his tactical inexperience.
Wheating--is the real deal. Remember, he's a miler, yet he defeated a lot of top class 800 competition. He's really learning how to run now that his competition is getting tougher.

I have high hopes for these two, and Bram Som is still worth watching, too.

For some reason, they didn't disqualify Lewandowski (I don't understand that), but, bear in mind, his time could have been faster, if he'd not had to race partly on grass. Anyway, these are very good times, and quite promising for Wheating the miler, in particular:

I agree. Lewandowski was really moving. Depite the fact that you can't go off the track, you have to like his effort. Should be interesting to see him in Barcelona.

Surprisingly great women's 1500m. Absolute domination by the beautiful Russian Almininova (sp?), and a sweep by Europeans and Americans. The Ethiopian (whom I believe was last year's world champion) managed only fourth or fifth. May have to add a few of these names to the watch list.

how did the White men look in the 4x100 relay? white lightning mentioned Pickering ran, so how'd he look? i couldn't find any splits. also, who did the Italians have running? the Brit and Italian times were pretty good.

Honestly, it was impossible to tell. They never showed any good slow-mo relays of the entire 4 by 100. LeMaitre never got a chance to run. Pickering, I couldn't tell. The Italian anchor (possibly Collio) was defeated but only by a small margin.

It's gonna be a sweep: J. Borlee, Gillick, and K. Borlee. And Rooney will finish fourth. Actually an eight-runner sweep is not impossible, given some of the young'uns. Wouldn't that be sweet?

Borlee is the man to watch in Monaco today. However, note that it is not the FAST Borlee (Jonathan). It is the SLIGHTLY-LESS-FAST Borlee, Kevin. Despite the disappointing switcharoo, I'm still hoping for a Borlee victory (I would have guaranteed it with Jonathan in the race).

Wheating and Gregson!

I tell you guys, there's more going on with our young mid-distance hopefuls than with our sprinter (singular, not plural, as LeMaitre is clearly all by himself without any help now that Guliyev and Pickering have totally crapped out). A few minutes ago, the young Aussie Ryan Gregson (he's either 19 or 20) and American Andrew Wheating (just graduated Oregon) ran in a mega-fast world class field of 1500 runners. Not only were there pb's far slower than anyone else's in the race, but the race was also paced to be extremely fast. Nevertheless, the two boys hung in and finished fourth and fifth in superb times (I believe Wheating hit 3:30 and Gregson 3:31), ahead of scads of Kenyans and "Americans" like Lagat. No, they're not ready to win Olympic gold yet, but they are learning what it takes to run with the best. Just like LeMaitre.

Learn to enjoy the mid-distances guys! The races are longer and more interesting anyway.
