I just wanted to start a thread on the 2007 World Champs starting on Friday. We have many events to look forward to. Let's get some discussion going on who were rooting for and how they might do.

In the 100 we have:

C.Pickering
D.Kuc
M.Osovnikar
C.Blume
P.Hession

Shirvo,Macro,Nagel,Woods,and LeBlanc won't be competing.

In the 200 we have:

T.Unger
J.Wissman
P.Hession

In the 400 we have:

J.Wariner
A.Rock
T.Benjamin

This is only a partial list of the sprinters that we root for but they are the most likely ones to have a chance at making a final & possibly medaling.

Let's get some thoughts,opinions,& predictions.

I would love to see Pickering make the finals. with some pr's that could happen. his biggest obstacle will be him himself. his age and experience will be against him. I'm hoping to see Blume sets a PR. it would also be nice to see Matic & Kuc get back to last years form. I think we will see a PR from Hession & Wissman in the 200. does anyone know why Macro isn't running?

Pickering has quite a bit of time to shave. The competition is going to be stiff. Here is a list of the best 100 tims for the year.

he does have to shave a good tenth off his pr, but if you look at that list, he's is in the top 40 and only about half which will be at the champs. if he can handle the mental stress, run consistently and drop a PR, he can make the finale. it a slim chance and it won't be easy, but it can be done. if he does make the finale he will most certainly run PR, but i think he needs a PR going into the final. the biggest barrier is going to be the mental aspect of running with the big boys. if he can handle that the rest should fall into place. either way it will be a learning experience. good luck to him!

Macro was not picked for the Canadain National Team despite winning the 100 again at their Nat'l Champs. He was very dissapointed. Canada has gotten very cheap with sending their athletes abroad and this will probably continue. They figure why bother if the athlete most likely can't make the final. It's too bad for Macro. I still say he should move to Greece with only a few years left to make an impact.

Pickering needs to pb like you guys said. I think he can do it.He can take it easy hopefully until the semi finals and then let it rip. Craig has nothing to lose but he will have to run a perfect race. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The Canadian beancounters run the amateur bodies. They have not sent many athletes that have met the A standard and won't send a B standard athlete unless they have an A going already. I do know that the head of Track Canada is going in his or her comped suite though.....

Nics dad is Greek and so it is in his blood. They actually adore Macrozonaris over there. He is not fast enough to make our team as all of the US Guys take too many Flinstone Vitamins.

All of the best to him in where ever he competes. I really do feel bad for him. He ran a 10.03 just 4 years ago and then all down hill from there. Macro and Shirvo have very similar careers in how quickly they went down hill. I will give Shirvington the overall edge however as he has run faster for longer than Nic.

Unfortunately Triple Jump indoor world record holder Christian Olsson of Sweden has had to pull out because of injury.

That is really sad. Olsson,Holm, and Kluft are all favorites in their respective events. I hope he has a speedy recovery and comes back strong with the olympics being next year.

Watch for Shirvo in the 4 x 100 though.

I think he's much more comfortable running in a team, when the heat
isn't just on him.

Lucky Aussies...in eastern Australia we're only 1 hour ahead of Osaka so I
can see it all live and not have to sacrifice any sleep

I was looking at the form charts and Pickering is rated 9th going into this meet. So if he is healthy and goes in a pb zone he can final. Also people chronically under perform in big meets so he might not have to go low 10.0X to final. Also Hession and Wissman are projected to final. Edited by: white is right

I would love to see Hession,Wissman and Unger make the 200 finals. That would be 3 out of 8 guys that we are rooting for.

Pickering is in the toughest of the opening heats. He is in a stacked field with very fast sprinters. Craig needs to finish in the top 3 and he will need to run very fast to advance. They have discussed this on some other message boards. Nothing could be worse than Pickering getting knocked out in the first round.

This is really great news. All of our guys made it through safely. It's nice to see some names that we don't mention very often make it through. Guys like Florin Suciu,Rosario LaMastra, and Jan Zumer. It's also cool to see the Japanese guys looking ok in front of their home crowd.

Thanks for posting the results. We shall see what happens in the next round later on. For anyone that is interested, you can watch the whole World Championships live on WCSN.com for a small fee. It's well worth the money. Let's root our guys on!

Matic Osovnikar and Simone Collio look very impressive with times of 10.21 and 10.22 into -1.5 wind. But why were their amateurs guys running 12 seconds and nearly 12 seconds?

Looks like running in Asafa Powell and Derrick Atkin's heat was good for Matic.

I just noticed that Nobuharu Asahara, the last qualifier in their heat at 10.16, is35 yearsold. Not a bad finish for an old-timer.

Asahara has been a guy that I have watched for over a decade. He has shown flashes of sucess similar to Shirvo but could never be consistant. I'm happy for him as he seems to be a very classy guy. I wonder what Suetgo didn't compete in the 100.

Matic looks great. I stayed up all night to watch the races live. He could have went even a little faster but he was smart to save some. Both Matic and Craig will have to run their best races to make the finals. Pickering really scared me as he had such a terrible start. I thought it was over until he hit that next gear and ran down the whole field!

I'm very happy that he didn't tighten up. He was relaxed and that shows maturity.

I really want both of these guys to make the final. Asahara would also be a nice end to his career. I'm afraid that if Devonish, and MLF make the finals,Craig will be forgotten about. Let's keep our fingers crossed. He should at least p.b. with a better start.

Osovnikar, Pickering, and Asahara in the same semi heat. What are the chances one will make the final. When was the last time an asian or cauc. made the 100m final in the olympics or world track championship. Anyone know?

I just noticed that all of these guys are in the same semi final heat. This really is too bad. First off, there are four sprinters in this heat that have run under 10 seconds. So they are at a disadvantage right off the bat. Second, they will be knocking each other off even if one of them has the race of their life. I'm still going to try to stay positive. It will be a blast from the past however as the heat will have 3 out of 8 guys that are of non african heritage.

I have a weird feeling that Matic will be the one to make it through. One thing is for sure, they need to stay as close to Asafa as possible to make the finals. Let's see what transpires. Come on Craig, show them why you are the future and also my avatar.

If one of these guys makes the final it will be most likely Pickering. I really only think that Burns or Christian could stop Matic or Craig making the finals. Also an injury could help these two(or even a dq to false starting). I can't see Asahara making it as he was really hardpressed to semi-final. Anyway he wins my old man river award for this meet...

The last time a non black made the final was 87'. I think three white Euros made the infamous Rome final...

My guess was right. I really wanted to see Craig make the finals but he was charged with a false start and he had to make sure he sat in the blocks the 2nd time so he wouldn't get disqualified. He was not a factor running a 10.29! Keep your headup Craig. Your still only 20 years old and there will be many more days to come in the future.

Matic Osovnikar made the finals like I thought he would. He is the pride of Slovenia and all of Europe at the moment. He has had a fine career finishing with a bronze medal at last years European Championships. He ran a 10.17 to make the final in a few hours. I wish him all the luck in the world. The drought is finally over for a euro sprinter making a final. Let's hope he can finish strong. Let's shock the world Matic!
