T-Wolves Jefferson out the torn ACL in right knee

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports Writer 52 minutes ago

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)All the progress the Minnesota Timberwolves have made in the new year came to a crashing halt Monday.

Star center Al Jefferson, the cornerstone of the franchises rebuilding plan who has emerged as one of the best post players in the league, will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

It was the most devastating news possible for a team that finally seemed to be turning the corner after a horrendous first season and a half in the post-Kevin Garnett Era.

Of course were all a little upset and a little down, forward Ryan Gomes said. Our guy, our captain, our superstar, is going to be missing for the remainder of our season. Of course our spirits are down.

Coach Kevin McHale said Jefferson will likely have surgery to repair the injury in the next week to 10 days.

The teams leading scorer and rebounder hurt his knee when he landed awkwardly late in Sundays 101-97 loss to New Orleans. He was examined Monday, when the anterior cruciate ligament tear was discovered.

Well miss Al in every aspect, from his personality to his play to his presence to everything else, McHale said. Hes such a good kid. Your heart goes out to the kid.

When the Timberwolves decided to part ways with Garnett after his 12th season in Minnesota ended in 2007, McHale set his sights on a low-post beast to serve as the new building block for the next phase of this organizations existence.

He considered the Los Angeles Lakers Andrew Bynum before pulling the trigger on a deal with Boston that landed him the 6-foot-10 Jefferson.

The Wolves shipped Garnett to the Celtics for a package that included two draft picks, Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, Gerald Green and Jefferson, and the big fella has not disappointed in his first 132 games as a centerpiece.

With averages of 23.1 points and 11 rebounds per game this season, Jefferson is one of only three players, along with Orlandos Dwight Howard and San Antonios Tim Duncan, to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds a game this season.

Als played at such a high level for this team and been such a big part of our team, McHale said. Everybody around here today is a little bit down in the dumps.

For a young Timberwolves team that has been playing better in 2009 after getting off to a 4-23 start to the season, the deflation at the practice facility on Monday was palpable. With Jefferson the focal point, the Wolves went 10-4 in January, and the 24-year-old center was playing even better early in this month.

He had 36 points and 22 rebounds in a loss at Houston on Saturday night and followed that up with 25 points and 14 boards before getting injured in the final 30 seconds against the Hornets on Sunday.

I feel terrible for Al. Als really, right now, devastated by it, McHale said. It all happens for a reason. Its hard for me to figure out what this reason is. Somehow hes just going to have to make the best of it and rehab and get better and move on from here.

Jeffersons absence will mean more minutes for rookie Kevin Love and likely for veteran center Jason Collins. The Wolves got Love in a draft-night trade with Memphis involving O.J. Mayo, and McHale has tried to keep his minutes down through the first half of the season to ease him into NBA life.

The coach wont have that luxury anymore.

Unfortunately for us, the season doesnt end, McHale said. Weve got to keep playing. So were just going to have to find a way. With any kind of adversity like that, new opportunities arise for other people. Were just going to have to go out there and make the best of it.

After a rough start to his rookie season, Love appears to be getting more and more comfortable with the speed and style of play in the NBA. He attributes much of that maturation to Jefferson.

Als a leader. Hes only 24 years old, but for me, hes been a mentor, Love said. Hes taught me so much stuff and hopefully well continue to grow as a team, as a unit.

Its going to be tough not having him in there, but tomorrow, the lights are still going to come on. Were still going to brush our teeth, put our pants on, put our shoes on, have to lace them up and go out there, Love said. Thats just what we have to do.

j41181 - My condolence to Al Jefferson, but this will be a plus for Kevin Love to excel even further. Expect Love to be one of their new prime focus on offense now.

I don't necessarily think this helps Love in his first season. Jefferson is a great player to play with and the T-wolves are probably going to get worse again. Love and the collective team were on a roll and the fans were filling the arena again. Love was already starting to get good minutes; Yes it is true that now he will get even bigger ones.

However, they might start to bring second man help defense to stop Love when he posts up and I don't know if he is ready "in his rookie season" to handle that as a scorer. That would be tough against the Garnett and Perkins or Gasol and Bynum types at the same time.

Hopefully he'll continue to shoot a high percentage and keep finding his post game, but it is going to be hard on such an over-matched team overall. The Wolves bench is horrible other than Miller who should be starting.

Miller needs to start seeing better minutes again; he's a great all-round player with all-star type athletic talent. It seems that Telfair and Foye are never on their games at the same time and whoever is cold that night should see less minutes. Corey Brewer continues to underachieve when he sees action.

But anyway, good luck to Mr. Love and Jefferson in his recovery too; I do like this team a lot, Miller and Love are two of my favorite guys in the entire league!Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

If Love gets more minutes he'll get more rebounds, but the OTHER ball-hogs will likely take the shots that Jefferson took.

According to the ESPN rookie efficiency statistics Love is the third best rookie in the league when I checked a week ago.

I believe Beasley was 10th.

Love is shooting and playing slightly less minutes than Beasley (meaning Beasley is getting far more hype), but I think Love has been more important to increasing his team's level of play this year.

The Wolves bench is atrocious now that Miller is starting and Gomes and Telfair aren't very good and VERY innconsistent. Foye is becoming a solid player, but is not a star yet by any stretch. Love will need more help for the Wolves to become a force. The Wolves are going to miss Jefferson considering their weak roster overall.

It's true the loss of Jefferson will make things harder for Love, but this is a great challenge for him to excel. No matter how many ball-hogs there are around him (except for Miller) Love will get enough touches to score, rebound, and excel. He will get the major minutes no matter what. I expect Love to be highly upgraded and polished by the end of this season, thanks in part to the numerous hardships he will go through as of now.

Kevin Love with a monster game in a loss 10-12;; 24 pts.; 15 Rebs; 2 assists. When you're scoring double the points of shots taken that is CRAZY efficiency.

Mike Miller also had a crazy efficient scoring night. 21 points on 11 shots and 8 rebounds and 6 assists. But no other T-wolve had an impressively efficient night except Craig Smith off the bench. Gomes played pretty well, but Miller and Love are the T-wolves best players bar none!

Edited: Spelled efficient wrong; why don't I see these things until it is posted. The color stands out better I think.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Love is now averaging 10.3ppg 8.8rpg on the season.

I saw him play for the first time on tv Saturday against the Bobcats. He outplayed Emeka Okafor scoring 22pts and grabbing 7rebs

Kevin Love is only 20 and he's already a double-double machine. He's well on his way to becoming a perennial all-star, and a regular 20-10 guy for years to come.

I hope his success in the NBA will shut up some of the critics who predicted he would struggle. I also hope this would allow guys like Brockman, Hansborough, and Harangody to also make the transition into the NBA as solid rebounders and legitimate double-digit scorers. (even though Kevin Love's offensive game is far more polished than these guys)

Love's offensive game is more polished than Brockman, but not better than Psycho-Ts IMO. Hansbrough is an offensive machine! Tyler can rebound like a champ and play solid D in the NBA too. Another David Lee?

Harangody is polished, but I think he's more of a 6th or 7th man in the NBA personally due to being a little shorter (only 6'7) and not being as athletic as Love and Hansbrough.

The league will probably go under before Love and the other guys get respect.

I was about to say, well smart GM's will get guys that can win games but there aren't that many smart GM's out there.

Kevin Love can rebound, score and pass. he puts up great numbers and he really isn't that tall for a big man.

I don't know what I see Hansborough as in the pros. will he be relegated to the bench like Joe Alexander or will he be a important piece of the puzzle like Bruce Bowen, Shane Battier, or a Robert Horry? hopefully he goes to a good team.

Love has been so impressive thus far since the Jefferson injury. His scoring is up, but more so is his rebounding. He's had several nights having 15-19 rebounds. Like I said, Love is having a BIG BREAK!

Timberwolves roll out ROY campaign for Love</font>

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports Writer 10 hours, 49 minutes ago

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)â€â€Kevin Love: The best new product of 2008-09.

At least that's how the Minnesota Timberwolves are touting their excellent rookie forward in a spoof "infomercial" the team is distributing as a campaign for rookie of the year honors.

In the short video that features highlights, stats and plenty of infomercial cheese, Love is touting "Mr. Love Miracle Glass Cleaner," a product he says helps him clean the glass consistently to a streak-free shine.

"I've had so much success that people keep asking me, 'Kevin, how do you keep the backboards so clean?"' Love says in his best impersonation of a campy infomercial host. "Well today, I'm here to share that secret with all of you."

The team has also built a Web siteâ€â€www.votemrlove.comâ€â€to show the video and build support for a player who has quietly put up one of the better rebounding seasons by a rookie in league history.

The fifth overall pick who was acquired in a draft-night trade from Memphis in a deal involving O.J. Mayo, Love is averaging 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds a game this season. Those numbers have been increasing since Al Jefferson went down with a knee injury just before the All-Star break.

Love is second in the NBA behind Dwight Howard in total offensive rebounds, despite averaging just 24.9 minutes per game, and third in rebounds per 48 minutes. He leads the league in offensive rebound percentageâ€â€a stat that calculates the percentage of rebounds grabbed compared to total rebounds available while a player is in the game.

"Mr. Love Glass Cleaner will give you that clean, streak-free glass every time you use it," a voiceover gushes. "And Mr. Love does all the work for you."

The marketing campaignâ€â€which is being sent to about 125 media members who vote on the awardâ€â€is necessary because Love's progress has gone largely unnoticed playing for the Timberwolves (21-54), who have the fifth-worst record in the league.

"Kevin's played very, very well. He's got to be in consideration for rookie of the year," said coach Kevin McHale. "I think he's done a lot, and he's just going to get better and better and better."

McHale, though, said he thinks Chicago's Derrick Rose should win because the Bulls are in playoff position.

Love said he thought Rose would probably win the award, but he also has been pleased by his progress after a rough start. His 25 double-doubles far exceed that of any other rookie, and is one more than Dallas Mavericks All-Star Dirk Nowitzki.

"I really like him," Nowitzki said of Love after a 108-88 victory over the Wolves on Tuesday. "He plays hard. He can make the little 15-, 16-footer. He's a heck of a rebounder, especially offensively.

"The guy just plays fearless and he keeps coming. For a rookie, that's pretty impressive. So the sky's the limit for him."

When he was playing limited minutes earlier in the season, Love was actually more efficient and effective on both ends of the floor, McHale said. Since Love has taken on a bigger role with Jefferson out, his play on the defensive end has suffered a bit.

"That's not Kevin Love. That's every young guy," McHale said. "That's why when you give them minutes, they usually take a while to figure out how to play defense because they're worried about the other stuff. But I thought that, overall, he's had a tremendous year. He's really improved in a lot of areas."

Veteran Wolves forward Brian Cardinal picked up the nickname "The Custodian" for his blue-collar work in college at Purdue. He shows up in the informercial as a custodian who endorses Mr. Love Miracle Glass Cleaner, and has watched the 20-year-old grow up as the season has worn on.

"Unfortunately he's had a lot of opportunities with Al being out," Cardinal said. "At the same time, it's fortunate, because he's had those opportunities and done well and he's played hard, played aggressive. That's what we need from him."

The kit the team is sending out to media members across the country also includes a sample size of the glass cleaner, a Kevin Love shammy and a "Mr. Love Sponge."

In his short time at UCLA, Love didn't take an acting class, something he said should be apparent in the video.

"You saw in the infomercial, I didn't look that good acting," Love said. "That was part of the joke. I don't think I'm going to end up on the big screen anytime soon."

damn good numbers.

anyone have his assist numbers?
He had no assists, he did make a steal and a block. He has blossomed big time since the injury of Al Jefferson. Just what the doctor ordered. I have not seen him play that much, due to the bias of the TV networks. I did see a few highlights of him, and I will say he's got everything it takes to be an All-Star level player. It's been a wonderful year for Kevin Love, and I'm beginning to say "I LOVE this game!"

I forgot to mention Kevin Love's performance yesterday. I'm utmost confident he's going to succeed Pau Gasol and Dirk Nowitzki as the best white power forward in the West. Not to mention, become one of the NBA's best! He's a future perennial All-Star!

Love has only played 5 games this season so far but he would be second in the NBA in rebounding behind only Dwight Howard. NBA.com doesn't list him on the rebounding leaders because he hasn't played in enough games. Sooner or later he will be there though.

WA33, I think you've been misinformed. Love has played 11 games already. Just a few more games and he'll be accounted as among the top 5 in rebounds average. Despite losing today (112-87 vs. Atlanta), Love had another monster effort:

15 points (6-12 FG's, 0-1 3pt's. 3-3 FT's)
19 rebounds

Kevin Love is clearly one of the great hopes for white American basketball. The way he's playing reminds me of both Christian Laettner and Tom Gugliotta. Since he jumped to the NBA much younger than both players did, I figure he'll become much better than either were. I can see him becoming one the best power forwards in the future.

16 points (6-14 FG's, 1-3 3pt's, 3-3 FT's)
8 rebounds
4 assists
3 steals

I wouldn't compare Love to Gugliotta. Love is a better rebounder than Googs but doesn't have the offensive skills and isn't as good an athlete as Googs was. Googs had a few great seasons in Minnesota. He's my favorite player of all time.

Kevin Love is second right now in the NBA in rebounds per game at 12.5. The only player averaging more is Dwight Howard. He's averaging 15.6 ppg on 47 % field goal percentage. He's a future All-star for sure.
