it seems like there are more highly touted white frosh this year than i can remember from years past... here's some of the more highly regarded ones. maybe you guys could add some that you notice, and help keep us up to date on these.

kevinlove.jpg

Kevin Love-UCLA; possibly the highest rated frosh in the country.

kylesingler-1.jpg

Kyle Singler-Duke; he might just be the best Dukie... as a freshman.

taylorking.jpg

Taylor King-Duke; an intriguing mix of power and jump-shooting.

nickcalathes.jpg

Nick Calathes-Florida; a 6-7 point guard who can both start AND finish the break.

kostakoufos.jpg

Kosta Koufos-Ohio State; is compared to Greg Oden... is he the real deal?

colealdrich.jpg

Cole Aldrich-Kansas; an athletically gifted big man with a soft jumper who's been bitten by the injury bug.

andrewogilvy.jpg

Andrew Ogilvy-Vanderbilt; the Australian big man has been pegged by some as the favorite to win SEC Freshman of the Year.

i mentioned him already in his own thread, but i wanted to include him here, too. he wasn't highly touted, but he can certainly play.

Justin Safford-Missouri; the best athlete on the Tigers is a "goofy" looking white kid.

Florida's Nick Calathes has started off strong. in two games, he's scored 21 and 15 points respectively, and shown the knack for brilliant passing, although like many young point guards he's trying to make too many spectacular plays and his turnovers are a bit too high.

Florida also has two other talented freshman.

6-9 swingman Chandler Parsons. Chandler scored 15 on 5-7 shooting, while adding 6 assists to just 1 turnover in the Gators most recent game. he isn't starting yet, but he is getting a lot of minutes.

6-8 high-rising, athletic forward Adam Allen runner-up to teammate Nick Calathes for Florida HSPOY last year, also scored 15, on 6-9 shooting. he's getting a lot of minutes off the bench, as well.

Andrew Ogilvy lived up to the hype in the opening game of his career at Vanderbilt.

i watched this game, and Ogilvy is both muscular and agile, and posesses the soft touch you'd expect from an Aussie. he was easily the best player on the court, scoring 18 on 6-9 shooting from the floor and 6-7 from the charity stripe. he also had 9 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.

Duke's talented freshmen duo looked impressive in the Blue Devils opener...

Kyle Singler played above the rim on both ends, scoring 15 points on 5-7 from the floor and 5-5 from the line. he also added a game high 3 blocked shots and 8 rebounds.
smiley32.gif

Taylor King scored a game-high 20 points on 7-9 shooting, including 5-7 from 3-point range. he added 6 boards and 2 blocked shots, as well.

i finally got to watch Kosta Koufos play, and he is impressive. he's a well-built 7-footer who moves very well. think Greg Oden with a jump shot. or more accurately, he is impressive offensively as Greg Oden was defensively.

in Ohio State's season opener, the McDonald's All American scored 18 points on 8-14 shooting (including 2-3 from 3-point range), snared 8 rebounds, had a block and an assist with ZERO turnovers. he is GOOD.
smiley32.gif

additionally, Ohio State started another white freshman, but one who is very impressive.

his name is Jon Diebler, and he is a 6-6 shooting guard. Diebler, who was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio last year over Koufos, led the USA in scoring as a senior in high school last year with just over 41 points per game.

Diebler struggled with his shot in this game, but he is a talented prospect to follow.

UCLA's highly regarded freshman big man Kevin Love has opened the season with back-to-back games of 20-plus points.

he had 22 points, 13 rebounds, and a block in the opener. then followed that up with 21 points, 9 boards, 2 steals and a block last night. he is Godzilla on the West Coast...

Singler has a very ARYAN jawline. Like Rutger hauer. That is a dominant male trait.

Taylor king has attributes as well. I think these guys are being held back by coach k.

In fact all people like this are held back in usa sports imo. I've see really big weightlifter type basketball players get screwed many times before while some fat-ass slobbering black ****got gets to go to the nba. For example, 7'2 330 lb. alexander keuhl, kaspars kambala, luke harongody, brian butch, greg stiemsma, etc.The usa is a f**king joke and the world games will prove it YET AGAIN.

Kosta Koufos has been dominating!
kostafoufos.jpg

Kosta led Ohio State with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots in their upset win over Syracuse on Wednesday.
smiley32.gif

maybe he will finally start getting some national publicity...

fellow frosh Jon Diebler still hasn't found his jump shot, but he's started getting to the free throw line. this super scorer is beginning to adjust to the college game. he had 12 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals in the win.

and Andy Katz just reported on him, as well. of course, there are numerous qualifying statements regarding his 'talent.'

funny, i don't remember any of those a year with Greg Oden. nope. everybody had a man-crush on the 40-year-old freshman...

Koufos shines on the biggest stage

NEW YORK -- Ohio State coach Thad Matta had no idea how 7-foot freshman forward Kosta Koufos would handle the New York stage.

Panagiotis Giannakis and Nikos Kerameas did.

Giannakis, the current Greek national team coach, and Kerameas, last summer's 18-and-under Greek coach, know all about Koufos facing pressure situations.

Koufos was the spry American kid with a Greek mother who took home MVP honors as he led the Greek team to a silver medal in the European championships in Spain last summer.

So, naturally, the Greek basketball contingent took in Koufos' national debut in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night to see their investment first hand.

In front of them Wednesday was the future of Greek Olympic basketball. And, if this keeps up, he'll be an anchor for Ohio State this season and possibly beyond, and a likely name to know in the NBA sometime soon.

Koufos led the Buckeyes, last season's national runner-up, with a career-high 24 points and nine boards in a 79-65 victory over Syracuse in the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals. While Syracuse was flustered with trying to stop veteran point guard Jamar Butler (14 points), it was Koufos who caused the most angst with his ability to do a little bit of everything quite well.

"I'll tell you what kills me is him blowing up after three games in college," said Ohio State coach Thad Matta, trying to downplay the situation of the Greek coaches in attendance as he deals with another hyped freshman big man. "I didn't know how he would respond [in New York]."

Well, clearly Koufos is ready for prime time. This is getting ridiculous. It was a new night and a different venue, and yet another freshman from the class of 2007 led an elite team to an impressive win.

"I've never seen anything close to this class," said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim.

The difference with Koufos, something that his brethren in this class -- like O.J. Mayo (USC), Michael Beasley (Kansas State), Derrick Rose (Memphis), Kevin Love (UCLA), Eric Gordon (Indiana), J.J. Hickson (NC State), Kyle Singler (Duke) and Patrick Mills (Saint Mary's) -- can't claim is to have a national team chasing him. Sure, Mills will be a staple with the Australians if he continues to be a star over here (37 points for the Gaels in a win over Oregon on Tuesday night in Moraga). But Koufos already has built-in national credibility with his ancestral homeland.

After the game, Giannakis didn't commit a spot on the Olympic-qualifying team to Koufos, but it seemed to be understood that the 7-footer would be on the squad that will play for a berth in the Beijing Olympics next summer.

"It was a dream of mine as a little kid," said Koufos of playing in the Olympics. "God blessed me with the opportunity to play on the 18-and-under national team in Greece and play for the European championship, and I was fortunate to be the MVP of the tournament."

Koufos is as polite as they come in college. He addresses the media with a "yes sir," and is extremely grateful to Matta and Kerameas.

But this didn't happen by accident. Koufos said he started going to LeBron James' open gyms when he was a high school freshman. AAU basketball in the state of Ohio is flourishing, and Koufos thrived in the circuit. He knew of the opportunity to play for Greece prior to his junior season, but he wanted to continue to play out of Canton, Ohio, for another summer. Once he got to Ohio State, Matta said the coaches literally had to boot him out of the gym because he was working too much.

But, like many players who want to be great, Koufos craves knowledge of his predecessors. He studies Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol. Giannakis loves that he runs the court well, can shoot and is an overall talent. Boeheim, who probably has as much experience coaching internationally as any other college coach, loves Koufos' shot, touch and ability to handle the ball.

Koufos talked about Gasol's jab step and Nowitzki's ability to shoot the 3-pointer. All of that is a part of Koufos' game.

His passing is still a lost art at times, and Koufos came into Wednesday's game with only two assists in the two previous games. He picked up another one Wednesday night, but it came at a crucial time and showed how he is learning that he doesn't always have to shoot. He had a wide-open 3-pointer at the top of the key but instead dumped the ball to Othello Hunter for a dunk and a foul to give the Buckeyes an insurmountable 14-point lead.

"The other night he was driving to the basket and he got fouled and someone said he was passing, and I said he hasn't passed this year," Matta said. "He's getting the hang of it. But he has so much to learn."

Koufos' efficiency on the court, his ability to convert the back-cut layup, the long-range shot, the mid-range and the power-drive to the hoop make him so much more effective. He's like many of his classmates that appear to be schooled beyond their years with their poise under pressure.

When he starred in Europe this past summer, Matta had his doubts.

"I didn't know anything about it and still to this day don't know the competition," said Matta, who is getting more inspired play from yet another solid freshmen class as Jon Diebler (12 points) and Evan Turner (six points and two blocks) shined over Syracuse's heralded class of Jonny Flynn and Donte Greene (six turnovers between them, and an 0-for-6 night for Flynn).

Matta said he wondered, "Who is he playing against? Later, I found out pretty good competition."

Koufos will have to bang with pretty good competition in Texas A&M's Joseph Jones and DeAndre Jordan in Friday's NIT Season Tip-Off finale (7 p.m. ET, ESPN) and North Carolina's tandem of Tyler Hansbrough and Deon Thompson in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Columbus on Nov. 28 (9 p.m. ET, ESPN). Still, Koufos is making his mark both here and in Greece.

"I think that Kosta is a guy who can give a lot to basketball,"Giannakis said. "He's a nice person. He has a great body and skills to do something special with basketball, in my opinion."

Koufos' game clearly translates regardless of the language. And, as Matta said, it's only going to get better.

Kyle Singler was named Maui Invitational MVP after leading the Dukies to the championship.

the 6'8 Singler finished the final game with a career best 25 points (7-of-11 FG) along with six rebounds.

Singler is one of two highly touted white freshmen from Oregon who are dominating early in the college roundball season, and leading their teams to wins.

Kevin Love, from Lake Oswego, is leading UCLA in scoring (20.2 points per game) and rebounding (11.6). And the second-ranked Bruins are 5-0.

Singler, from Medford, is leading Duke in scoring (15.8 ppg) and is second in rebounding 6.4 (rpg). He nailed the clinching free throws with 13 seconds left, as the No. 13 Blue Devils beat all-black No. 11 Marquette for the Maui Invitational title. Duke also is 5-0.

Justin IS white. end of discussion. now moving on...

Purdue plays four freshmen a LOT of minutes this season, the best of which are the two white kids. Scott Martin and Robbie Hummel are both 6-8 guard forwards. they are both very skilled, very talented, and very tough. they even look a lot alike.

SCOTTMARTIN7_11150.JPG
ROBBIEHUMMEL7_11150.JPG

Scott Martin          Robbie Hummel

Scott leads the Boilermakers in scoring. Robbie leads them in rebounding.

as an aside, one of the best defensive players in America suits up for Purdue. sophomore point guard Chris Kramer leads the team in steals AND assists. last year, as a true freshman, Chris, en route to being named to the Big Ten Defensive Team, shattered the Purdue freshman record for steals. he also led the team in assists, and isn't afraid to try to dunk on someone's head.

in a narrow, 61-58 loss to Clemson on the road, Scott led the team in scoring with 13 and chipped in 5 reboounds. Robbie had 7 points and 6 boards.

in related news, Chris Kramer took a bad fall when he got clipped going in for a dunk on a fast break. hopefully he will recover quickly.

Wisconsin's 6-10 forward Jon Leuer tied for a team-high in both scoring and rebounds, with 12 and 6.

Duke's talented frosh forward tandem also had solid games. Kyle Singler and Taylor King both had 15 points and 5 boards.

Florida's talented freshman point guard Nick Calathes continues his strong year. in last night's win against Vermont, Calathes had a team-high 21 points. he needs to cut down on his turnovers, though. he's a little too loose with the ball.

fellow frosh Chandler Parsons added 10 points and 6 boards, off the bench.

white sophomore forward Dan Werner had a strong game, with 9 points and 7 boards.

the game's high scorer was Vermont's best player, white junior point guard Mike Trimboli, with 23.

Dick Vitale almost never gives 'love' to white players, unless of course they play for Duke or North Carolina... but two white freshmen were named to his early season Diaper Dandies team; Duke's Kyle Singler and UCLA's Kevin Love.

i caught sight of maybe THE best passer in college basketball on Thursday night...

Vanderbilt's freshman point guard Keegan Bell comes off the bench and hasn't scored a single point this season. BUT, damn can this kid pass the ball! he is brilliant!

in Vandy's game against South Alabama, he had 4 assists in just 8 minutes. they were all highlight caliber. and he only had 1 turnover.

for the season, he has 14 assists to just 4 turnovers.

Butler's freshman forward Matt Howard had a huge night against Ohio State to help the Bulldogs earn a victory. Howard had a game-high 23 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.

matthowardbutler.jpg

Matt Howard scores against OSU.

for OSU, freshman center Kosta Koufos had a solid outing despite getting limited chances due to Butler's pressure on OSU's guards. Koufos had team-highs with 16 points, 7 boards, and 3 blocked shots.

OSU freshman shooting guard Jon Diebler struggled wih Butler's defense, shooting just 1-6 for 2 points. he also had 6 turnovers. ouch! Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

Vanderbilt's freshman forward/center A.J. Ogilvy continues to wreak havoc on opposing defenses. he only missed one shot against Georgia Tech as Vanderbilt blew out the Yellowjackets, 92-79.

Ogilvy had 16 points on 6-7 shooting, and added 6 rebounds in 22 minutes.

an athletic forward that likely won't play on television this year is having a good season for a bad team.

Portland's Luke Sikma is averaging over 10 rebounds per game, and just under 10 points per contest. he also leads his team in steals and assists (though he has more turnovers than assists which obviously is not good).

he also leads the Pilots in blocked shots, having blocked more than the rest of his team combined!
