Referendum, Me and Colonel Reb looked at the SEC since 2005 to see that it may have improved slightly for numbers of total white starters and numbers of white caste position players from 2005 until now.

I will take on the task of finishing the PAC 10 (thank you to referendum for doing a lot of the work already- I just wanted to look at all the caste positions and go two years further back). I will also write up the Big East and the Independents.

We will need other people to volunteer to do the other eight Conferences. If we get four volunteers- that would make two conferences each to do. If we have more volunteers- people could do one conference each. I will be very busy this summer (I'm getting married August 15th and then leaving for a 9 day honeymoon to Italy on the 17th)- so I can't start right away, but I can promise you I will finish this by the 1st week of the FBS season. All of us here- will all be very appreciative to anyone who signs up for the other 8 conferences. This might even make watching the college football season more fun.

Here is an example of the format we should use for this research.

Here are the amount of whites starting in the SEC from 2005-2009.

2009- 72 white starters, 2008- 61, 2007- 60, 2006- 68 2005- 62

HB: 2009- 1 white starting (Hawkins), 2008- 1 white starting (Hawkins), 2007- 1 white starting (Hester), 2006- 0 whites starting- Hester was used at HB, but mostly at FB, 2005- 0 whites starting- Tre Smith and Peyton Hillis started some games, but were not full time starters

WR: 2009- 3 whites starting, 2008- 3 whites starting if you count Riley Cooper who was the 3rd WR, 2007- 2 whites starting, 2006- 1 white starting, 2005- 1 white starting.

DT: 2009- 2 whites starting, 2008- 2 whites starting 2007- 4 whites starting, 2006- 2 whites starting, 2005- 5 whites starting

S: 2009- 3 whites starting, 2008- 1 white starting, 2007- 2 whites starting, 2006- 1 white starting, 2005- 1 white starting

CB: 2009- 0, 2008- 0, 2007- 0, 2006- 0, 2005- 1 white starting

Total caste breakers: 2009- 9 whites, 2008- 7 whites, 2007- 9 whites, 2006- 4 whites, 2005- 8 whites

Sounds like a good project, the only thing I can think of that might be a problem is the fact that not all FBS teams were previewed in 2005, only 89 were. We'll have to make note of this when comparing conferences by year, as it won't be as accurate. The SEC was completed in 2005, but I know several other conferences weren't. We probably should note how many teams were missing from each conference or just concentrate on doing 2006 and up.

Also, anyone who is thinking of doing this research will need to become familiar with the advanced search function. It works great if (when in the advanced search window) you set the search up like this:

Thanks for the kind wishes. I will be flying into Rome where we will stay for 4 days, then flying to Venice for a quick stay there. Then we will rent a car and drive to Florence and Pisa and then fly home from Pisa switching in France. I have already been to Naples and also the nearby Imalfi coast. We're not going there this time, but I want to go back and visit an absolutely beautiful town called Positano in that section with my wife someday. I recommend to everyone here to go there if you ever go to Italy.

Come on guys we need more volunteers for this. I will do the rest of the Pac-10, the Big East and the Independents, but I can't do it until the end of August/ first week of September because of my busy schedule.

Early congrats on the marriage, Tough! I'm not going to have much time to do this research. I'm swamped with work and will be for months. Hopefully some others will step up and contribute to this worthwhile effort!
