A growing NFL trend in recent years is for a star player who is washed up to re-sign with his original or main team for one day, and then officially retire to plaudits and hooplah. Tim Brown went through this ritual a few days ago when he became a Raider for a day.

But of course this mostly black exercise in egogratification has now been taken to absurd extremes. Remember Derrick Alexander? A mediocre, underachieving receiver who last played in the NFL in 2002, Alexander signed a one-day contract with Kansas City so he could retire as a Chief.

A once good idea hasnow officially become buffoonish. It's pathetic to think that Alexander considers himself worthy of what is supposed to be an honor, even more pathetic for the Chiefs to allow it. Who's next -- Courtney Hawkins?
