I saw the new King Kong movie last week with my son. Overall, it was a
great cinematic achievement (the special effects, especially on Skull
Island, were awesome), but the casting left a whole lot to be desired.
Jack Black was a complete joke as Carl Denham. Why a genius like Peter
Jackson would even think of him in a leading role is beyond me. If not
for Kong and the dinosaurs, he would have ruined the film. As bad as
this casting choice was, the selection of Adrien Brody as the leading
man was totally ridiculous. If you're not familiar with Brody, he is
probably the ugliest human being to ever be cast as a romantic leading
man in the history of Hollywood. Despite his obvious unattractiveness,
the media persists in painting him as some kind of "hot" guy (I read
that he just made the top 25 on MTV's "sexiest" males list).
Unbelievable. Almost as bad as trying to claim 50 Cent and other savage
looking rappers are "hot" (which the same media does). Anyway, Jackson
is a very interesting director. He has now produced another blockbuster
without a significant black presence onscreen. This is unheard of
nowadays. Unlike the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, he did employ a black
in the cast, but although his character was a positive one, he was
killed off early by Kong and did not have any chance to treat us to any
predictable propganda. For those of you who are interested, I would
definitely recommend seeing King Kong. Even beyond the cast problems,
it's not a perfect film, but it's visually stunning and overall a great
piece of entertainment.
