This is a real phenomenon. And, if it's not a "top recruit" that passed - you'll probably never hear about it. It won't be on ESPN. From reading numerous stories, a bunch of these athletes were "skill players" (leaner-type guys).

I understand that a lean guy could have a heart defect, but there seems to be way more leaner-types than chubby/obese types, that are collapsing. I'm looking for more information, however, to get a better understanding.

Here's a recent NC story:

N.C. A&T student dies during track tryout

A&T will look into athlete's death

http://www.news-record.com/content/2010/08/25/article/at_will_look_into_athletes_death

I know where several more stories are, but my computer is trippin' out some...

P.S. - When I see an elderly black, they rarely look like Mike Tyson or Kimbo Slice.. They usually appear to have a significant amount of White blood, and more refined faces. The really "primitive" types don't seem to live very long.

Even with the internet, it's difficult to keep track of all 50 states. Any help would be appreciated.

In North Carolina, there has been nearly a dozen cases in recent times. I certainly don't think that there's anything "unique" with North Carolina, so I imagine that there are several stories that I've never heard of in other states.

My own unscientific observation over the years of athletes dying young and suddenly is that most of them are black. Blacks in general, besides dying much earlier than Whites on average, seem to more often be afflicted with health problems starting at a young age.

When Bernie Mac passed away not too long ago at 50, I was watching FoxNews, and the one doctor ACTUALLY said that blacks "have different genetics."

I was pleasantly surprised.

Death

Mac was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and was being treated for pneumonia, according to his spokeswoman. After a week of unsuccessful medical treatment, Mac died in the early morning hours of August 9, 2008 at the age of 50. A few years prior to his death, he publicly disclosed that he suffered from sarcoidosis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in tissue, most often in the lungs.[5]

Blacks do seem to have more health problems in general than Whites. For all their supposed superiority in regards to dealing with hot climates and such, I've never seen it. I've worked with blacks doing all sorts of manual labor in the Deep South over the years. Some of them bragged about how much work they could do and some were a lot bigger than me, but I've never met one that I couldn't outwork.

I thought it was common knowledge that American negroes suffered from multiple genetic flaws because many of them are descended from inbreeding. They have weak hearts and poor circulatory systems to an extent not seen in African negroes. When you read about some 17 year old afflete collapsing and dying from a heart attack or stroke, it's a good bet that they have a high percentage of slave-stock in their genetic makeup (as opposed to being the recipient of refreshed DNA from post-slavery African immigration to the US or significant contributions from Caucasian genes).

Murphy High basketball player dies during game

April 29, 2008|Dan Arritt; Ben Bolch; Gary Klein, From Times Staff and Wire Reports

DeShawn Newton, a freshman from Los Angeles Murphy High, died Saturday during an Amateur Athletic Union boys' basketball tournament game in Grand Prairie, Texas, his father confirmed Monday.

Newton, a 5-foot-11 point guard, was playing for Southern California-based Impact Basketball in the Next Level Ballers national tournament at a YMCA facility in the Dallas suburb when he left the game and collapsed in his chair. Duane Newton learned of his son's death from his daughter, Deanna Newton, who was in attendance.

Look at the way Jackie Robinson aged rapidly. If anybody should have lived to at least 80+ it was him. When he was traded to the Giants and refused to report the Dodgers knew he was finished at about 38. Within about 15 years he looked like a 70 year old man and was dead from diabetes.

white is right, you call to my mind a photo I saw once. Here's where I saw it...

When I was in middle school in the early '70s, I read a few books in the "Little League Library" series (I forget the publisher) about baseball history, baseball playing hits, etc. One of those books was about no-hitters. One of the no-nos highlighted was by Sal Maglie for the Dodgers late in the 1956 season (Jackie Robinson's last season) as the defending world champion Bums drove towards their last pennant in Brooklyn. That book had a photo of Maglie in the clubhouse afterwards being congratulated by Jackie Robinson. Robinson's hair was already solid white at 38.

For the record.. I'm not surprised when sumos' pass away, but I just want to see what the proportion is of (lean-types vs sumos) that pass suddenly.

Yes I have a few photos from the early 70's in book I owned years ago called the Boys of Summer . While all the other players looked about 50 or so Robinson looked like frail old man who was described as near blind and having to be guided to address the fans at Chavez Ravine.

I just googled "Florida high school football fatalities" - and this very recent story popped-up:
