also, today on SI.com's site... "Busting Loose: the Eastern Conference" which picks a young player from each team that they expect to blow up this season.

out of 15 teams, they mention just 3 white players: Darko Milicic, Andres Nocioni, and Darius Songaila, who they "compliment" by saying "He can't guard Wes Unseld (even at age 60), or post up the Sunday edition of the Washington Post..."

they go on to actually compliment him, but seriously. WTF?!?

and in more news about Darko, it appears he is poised to dominate this year...

Pay Darko now or later?
Thanks to an offseason weightlifting program, Darko Milicic has bulked up, reportedly adding 20-25 pounds of muscle to his 7-foot frame. Now the question becomes: Will he shed the weight of all those expectations that have become so heavy since he was drafted second overall in 2003?

During his 2-1/2 year tenure in Detroit, Milicic received more grief than playing time. His development was of secondary concern to a Pistons club focused on the immediate goal of winning titles. But last February's trade to Orlando gave him a fresh start and significant minutes on a younger team with long-range aspirations and more patience.

Then at this summer's World Championships in Japan, he had a breakthrough performance with his Serbia & Montenegro team, averaging 16.1 points and 9.3 rebounds while holding his own against the best international players. With a bigger, stronger body and a chance at moving into the Magic's starting lineup alongside Dwight Howard, he appears poised to have a breakout season.

But for now, it's OK to remain skeptical about Milicic. After all, the Magic appear to be. Faced with signing Milicic to a extension or waiting until next summer when his contract ends and he becomes a free agent (the Magic will have first-refusal rights), GM Otis Smith has indicated he wants to judge the 21-year-old's worth on more than the 30 games he played in Orlando last season.

Wise move, but it'll prove costly if Milicic matches his Japan numbers this season. Smith, however, seems willing to pay a premium for a proven Milicic as opposed to rolling the dice now on one who remains an enigma. Of course, judging a player in his contract year also has its own risks, since his motivation might disappear as soon as he inks that big-money deal.
and there was a good first impression from Italian rookie, and #1 overall pick in this year's draft, Andrea Bargnani. he doesn't seemed to intimidated by the uber-afaleets of the NBA...
WASHINGTON (AP) -Out at the top of the 3-point arc, Andrea Bargnani grabbed a loose ball and immediately rose to take his first shot as an NBA player.

Not a shred of hesitation.

The ball went in, part of the top overall draft pick's eight points and four rebounds in 13 1/2 minutes in the Toronto Raptors ' 93-88 exhibition victory over the Washington Wizards on Monday night.

The 7-foot, 250-pound Italian - the first European ever taken No. 1 - entered as a substitute about 5 1/2 minutes into the game and also showed some rough edges: He picked up three personal fouls within four minutes.

''I need to improve the same things I did in Italy. It's not a whole new world. It's still basketball,'' Bargnani said. ''If I don't do well on defense, I won't be on the floor.''

Bargnani (Bar-NYAH-nee) finished 3-of-6 from the field, including 2-for-2 on 3s. He finished with five fouls.

''That's just all young guys,'' Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. ''There's no way around the growing pains. There's no short cuts.''

Still, Bargnani did draw offensive fouls from Wizards centers Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas , both times with a bit of an exaggerated lean backward - a veteran move by Bargnani, who turns 21 this month.

He has drawn comparisons to Dallas Mavericks All-Star Dirk Nowitzki because of his height and outside touch: He made 37 percent of his 3-point tries in Italy.

''It's a bit fast right now. He has to get adapted to the game,'' said Wizards All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas , who scored 29 points. ''I'd say halfway through the season is when he'll hit his stride.''

But the magic sure don't hesitate in locking up their black players. Even ones with much less talent than Milicic. they will find a way to say he is not what they expected and then trade him for a piece of junk later this year. I hope not. But it will probably happen.

Skipperon it could happen the magic are
already showing their bias against Arroyo and Deiner
one of those two guys should be
getting more minutes in place of Jameer Nelson they
are both good players. Nelson is great some nights
and less than average in others and is not a a very good assist
man they should get a feel for who has the hot hand on a given night..

Having seen Arroyo in Detroit all too often, he is not a good player ... and
he's certainly not white.
