Today's a great day for hockey in Pittsburgh -- the deal is finally done and a new arena will be built and the Penguins are staying put.  Awesome!

You sure this isn't a mirage? Is it true that Governor Rendellshteyn really agreed to a "deal"?

I hope it's true and that the Beak is Home for decades. The franchise needs to pay off remainder of Super Mario's 1997 salary!

Dare we dream positive? Fold the Phoenix franchise and send it to Kansas City. Fold the Florida Panthers and send it to Winnipeg. And evaporate the New York Islanders and Nashville Hillbillies and spread their players around the 28-team league. Deport Gary Bettman to Teheran.

The deal maystill notcome through, thanks to the awarding of the Pittsburgh slots license to affirmative action candidate Don Barden (see above posts) over competent competition, including Isle of Capri which would have built the new arena without using any taxpayer money.

Even before he won the slots license, Barden's company was "one of the weakest operators in the gaming industry" with "historic track records of negative results" according to quotes in today's daily rag. And yesterday, Barden filed documents with the SEC indicating net losses of $14.3 million in 2006. Barden is supposed to kick in big money each of the next 30 years for the new arena, but all he's done so far is fall at least six months behind in the scheduled beginning of the building of his Pittsburgh casino -- a very impressive feat to accomplish in just three months time.

Ah, but he's "charismatic" and has a great smile.

I wouldn't worry too much about this Don. From what I've heard, the deal is pretty much set in stone. Unfortunately for Pennsylvania taxpayers. They will have to pick up the tab if the affirmative action slots candidate is unable to pay

Another update on the condition of the "charismatic" affirmative action winner's finances: Don Barden's main gaming company lost $14.3 million in 2006, has lost money in seven of the past nine years, has no shareholder equity, and is not generating enough money to cover its interest expenses. It's a company "fighting for its financial life," according to a report in today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. But he was somehow awarded the slots license, another great example of the evils and incompetence inherent in affirmative action.

Barden has yet to begin any kind of work on the casino he was awarded. But he's supposed to kick in $7.5 million per year toward financing Pittsburgh's new arena. Whatever you say, politicians.

It's almost too funny. A black guy that can't even make money in the gambling business which is basically state sanctioned theft.

Although I'm sure he's raking it in and spending it elsewhere.
