All the following comments are conjecture, I have no proof because I'm
not an insider but from all appearances what I'm going to say makes the
most sense.
The Kentucky WIldcats, one of basketeball's most famous programs,
appears to be coming apart at the seams. Huge losses to Kansas
and Indiana and a home loss to Vanderbilt have Kentucky fans wondering
what is going on. The team shows no heart or hustle, they are
unwilling to pass each other the ball, they are openly barking at one
another on the floor. I think the explanation is simple, your are
seeing a team with a host of internal conflicts. They could be
personal conflicts only but I suspect there is a racial angle.
Two of the starters are white and many people argue that there are
better black athletes sititng on the bench. I would guess if the
truth was known there are factions on the team that think their buddies
should be playing ahead of the white boys.
In most cases this type of collapse would come back to rest on the
shoulders of the head coach but with the release of the Glory Road, the
story of Texas Western defeating KY in the 66 finals and the
politically correct mythology that is accompanying it there is NO way
the KY athletic director will do anything regarding Tubby Smith.
Despite what KY fans call "team turmoil" a few years ago in which there
were some outlaws that finally had to be run off Tubby continues to get
a free pass on the type of players he brings in.
I may be wrong, this is conjecture on my part, but I think what you're
seeing with the collapse of KY as a national power is racial in
nature. Ky hasn't been able to recruit a top ranked white player
for some time and some of the really good ones when Tubby got
there transferred out. KY fans have tried to be politcally
correct for so long that they can't see what's happening in front of
their own eyes. KY took so much heat in the media over Rupp and
his supposed racist attitude that they've bent over backwards to not be
racist. In doing so they've now got a team that can't get along,
won't work hard and play team ball, and they have little hope of
recruiting any top white recruits. Why go into a mess like that
if you're a talent on the level of someone like Reddick ?
The white guys Tubby does get are KY boys he signs to keep the peace
with the locals.
Keep an eye on this team as conference and NCAA play starts. I
will really be surprised if they can salvage much of a season.
