A mild-mannered 86-year-old retired Ukranian carpenter from the North Center neighborhood went on trial Monday, charged with being a member of a Nazi-created police force rounding up Jews in Eastern Europe.


Osyp Firishchak was born in Ukraine and worked for the "Ukrainian Auxiliary Police" in Lviv, a Ukranian city that was part of Nazi-occupied Poland in the 1940s.


Firishchak limped slowly into court using a cane. He sat hunched in his chair listening to testimony Monday, with a full head of white hair and wearing a beige sport shirt. He sipped water from a paper cup, his hand shaking, and he took frequent bathroom trips. He offered no comment leaving court.


If it wins the case, this would be the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Special Investigations' 101st successful prosecution of a Nazi war criminal.

Right on, Bart! The creation of the OSI was the worst thing that
happened during the Carter administration. You are absolutely right
about the double standard; why is it so crucial to round up every
elderly anti-communist who can be placed anywhere near Germany during
WWII, while elderly communists are still the toast of Hollywood

bloody Bolshevik Revolution)? I think you and I know the answer to
that. I honestly thought this Nazi-hunting mania might slow down after
the John Demjanjuk fiasco, but it looks like "never again" is still a
strong enough propaganda cry for our political prostitutes to continue
to finance this unjust harrassment with our tax dollars.

They haven't been stopped. The new monstrosities they cause is the continuing breakdown of morality in our culture and the continued persecution of white people.

This is going to sound strange but what did Israel ever do for Cambodia, Rwanda, or Bosnia? Im from NY where in high school we are beaten to death with the horrors of the Holocaust. Im not here to say it didint happen and it probably was the worst crime in History but to hear it over and over and to say we learn History so it is not repeated is plain hypocrisy. Maybe if we had more Cambodians in the media we wouldint hear so much about the Jewish holocaust and realize all crimes against humanity are important.
