I caught part of Colin Cowturd's show on ESPN Radio, where they were discussing the Wonderlic and Young's workouts.
In a nutshell, Cowturd actually defended the use of the Wonderlic against myriad complaints that it 'shouldn't matter.' This surprised me greatly, and even more so when he went on to say that quarterback is the most cerebral of positions and you need a smart guy to run the offense.
Sean Salisbury came on to discuss Young's workout. As I understand it, it was a 'personal' workout, where he invited scouts to come and watch him workout on HIS terms, not theirs. So, his workout was unlike when a candidate travels to a team headquarters and is tested according to team standards.
Salisbury said that he was at the workout and it was 'stellar.' He said that any scout that says otherwise is an idiot. He said that Young missed this throw, that throw, another throw (he kept going, I lost track), and that yes he waited for his receivers to break before throwing, BUT - it was very impressive! This guy is NFL material!! Then he said he would play 'Devil's advocate,' to Cowturd's position on the Wonderlic, and his defense can be summarized by saying, 'I don't care if a guy knows what a right angle is from Geometry, I care if he can recognize a Cover 2 and where number 81 is.' Or something to that effect. Of course, this begs the question, how can any affalete graduate from high school and college and *not* know what a right angle is.
Cowturd also mentioned the disparity in the 40 times, too. I mentioned this to co-workers and all they said was, well that's fast for a quarterback, how fast does a quarterback have to be? Well, if you're touting your guy as a fast, mobile quarterback who can make things happen with his legs and his arm, wouldn't it help if he was actually *fast*, instead of just 'supposed to be?' I also tried to involve them in a question of why speed is supposed to be so important, but that, like the validity of the Wonderlic, fell on deaf ears.
If the 40 doesn't matter, and the Wonderlic doesn't matter, and a guy's athleticism doesn't matter (see Matt Jones, et al.) then what DOES matter??
