This kid is 6'4" and only 160. So far this season he has run 14.13 for the 110 hurdles, long jumped 24'7", high jumped 7'3/4", 48.7 400 meters, 36.28 300 hurdles and 52.75 400 hurdles. It will be interesting to see how he develops and what he chooses to concentrate on.

Mr. Klech had a decent California state meet. He won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 36.06! Was runner-up in the 110 hurdles at 13.98 and took third in the long jump at 22' 5.75" into gusty winds. He scored 24 points for his team which placed 5th with, you guessed it, 24 points. Maybe next year he'll single-handedly win the California meet.

That is ironic.Brutal was just saying that there are
no white kids in California that can run.He must live
there but doesn't open his eyes or his mind.Man,what a
talent this kid is!Keep it up David. The sky is the limit!

What a amazing athlete this kid is.If he wouldn't have
hit the 7th hurdle in the 110 hurdles,David would have
won the race. Here is a pic of him.

Mr. Klech is now Mr. Clutch!!!

California of San Ramon superstar David Klech had a very busy yet successful weekend in
winning his first state title (lifetime-best 36.06 in the intermediate hurdles), earning the
runner-up medallion in the high hurdles (lifetime legal best 13.98), and battling pesky
headwinds to place third in the long jump (22-05.75). David competed here as a green
sophomore last year and did not score a point in his lone final, but returned in 2005 as
an orange-tint-haired junior to score 24 individual points, seemingly a boys' state-meet
record! Mr. Clutch saved his best for last, showing poise, maturity and focus to record
the #2 junior-class time (and #21 overall) in U.S. history! Way to go, David!!!

Senior-to-be Klech ran in the Golden West Invitational last month. This is one of the big high school invitationals every summer. He won the 110's in 13.90 and the 300H in 36.63.

David Klech is competing in the World Youth Championships in Marrakech. He ran 51.84 in his 400 hurdles heat which was the world leading youth time. It was later bested by a Kenyan and a Saudi running 51.40. Should be a terrific final.

David ran 50.90 for third in the final. The Saudi also ran 50.90 in second. The runner from the Sudan won in 50.78. A great result for a world competition that should really give him confidence for his senior year.

Klech was signed early by UCLA. Here's a snip from a story on his signing:

The class is highlighted by the No. 1 returning intermediate hurdler in the US, David Klech, of San Ramon, CA (California HS). Klech is one of the most versatile, high-end performers in the country, competing in the hurdles and the jumps. Klech's top prep marks going into his senior year include - 13.90 (110mH), 36.06 (300mIH), 51.28 (400mH), 7-0.75 (High Jump) and 24-7.75w (Long Jump).

Klech is the No. 1 returning athlete in both the 110mH and 300mH in the state of California and is the No. 1 returning senior in the nation in the 300mH. Klech's 400m hurdle time of 51.28 is the No.1 returning mark in the nation. His top 110mH time of 13.90 is the No. 3 returning mark in the nation for a senior. Klech's high jump mark of 7-0.75 is the top returning mark in the nation and he also holds the top returning long jump mark in the state and the No. 2 returning mark in the nation at 24-7.75.

"We love David's versatility and abilities in various events, but we definitely want to develop him in a matter consistent with his Olympic goals," said Venegas. "At UCLA, we envision him as a hurdle and jump performer."

He is also a star in cross country.

Klech is amazing to see in person. He is very "underdeveloped", by that I
mean physically immature in comparison to many of the blacks he has
been beating on the track. (Blacks tend to physically mature 2 - 4 years
faster than whites, and few people point this out) He still has that
adolescent awkwardness about him, which makes his technical abilities all
the more amazing. At the World Youth meet, he was beaten by two 'kids'
who were quite obviously over the age limit for the competition. But
that's the way it is in jr. competitions around the world. African countries
are the biggest offenders, dropping in athletes who are obviously in their
mid 20's to compete against 16 year olds. Even the ever PC Track and
Field News had to comment on this.

Klech was in so many events at last year's state meet I think a touch of
fatigue hit him, and that cost him the 110's. He has awesome potential in
several events, although I think he should stick to the 400 hurdles (and
open 400) or the high jump. He's amazing in the high jump, going over 7
feet, and he doesn't specialize in the event.

Klech ran a 50.35 in the 400m Hurdles today at the Stanford Invitational. That's 9th on the all-time HS list.
He also won the 110m HH in 13.86, and placed 3rd in the LJ. Kid has talent...

Klech is too skinny for the decathalon. Don't forget he would have to do the shot put, discus, javelin, and pole vault.
I think if he concentrates on the 400m Hurdles exclusively, he could really go far with it. His season just started, and he ran one of the fastest HS times ever. He may be the record holder by the end of the summer.

Klech ran 35.45 at the Arcadia Int'l yesterday.
That makes hime 4th all-time at the 300m hurdles.
I think he'll get the record by the end of the year.

WL - I've seen Klech perform a couple of times, he's an undworldy talent.
When you see how young/undeveloped he looks next to some of the
black kids who look to be in their early 20's (they physically mature
earlier on average) you almost want to laugh. He needs to keep working
on his form - that alone will give him massive drops in time in the 400
hurdles, he does look like a guy who's going to be world class in a year or
so. I hope that holds true. I mentioned in another thread that it's funny
to see the faces of many black spectators when Klech is tearing up the
track. Most of the time, he's facing an all black field and leaving them far
behind. It's as big a hoot as watching Wariner these days. I'm looking
forward to seeing Klech run at the state meet in a few weeks. I think he
can take the National Record in the 300 hurdles sub 35.

I think he's been concentrating more on the hurdles this year, and not
putting as much work into other events. His high jump and long jump
talents are superb but he hasn't been putting in big marks in these events
this year - compared to last year. I think he wants that NR in the 300's
more than anything else. Edited by: Colonel Callan

This is a snippet from sfgate.com article:

There's only a month left in the 2005-06 prep season. Before it ends get out to see at least one of the following:

-- David Klech (California) run a 300-meter hurdles race. Track experts have had little reservation calling the 6-foot-4 senior the state's best all-around track and field athlete in the last half-century. Klech, who is UCLA-bound, can run and jump with the state's best in at least a half-dozen events, but he puts it all together in this one 35-second piece of sheer athleticism, stamina and precision.

Klech competes the next four weekends with the best viewing at Cal's Edwards Stadium for the North Coast Section Meet of Champions on May 27.

"last half-century"!
