I don't know if any of you recall the uproar a few years ago when an
intramural college basketball team in Colorado chose to name their team
and mascot, "The Fightin' Whities." The point was to protest the use of
team names and mascots considered derogatory to Native Americans, such
as "Redskins", or "Braves," for example.
Well, as usually happens with these things, it completely backfired.
The school was inundated with requests for apparel and accessories with
the team name and logo on it. The whole fiasco made national news and
Rush Limbaugh even commented on it during his radio show.
Personally, I loved it. I thoroughly enjoyed the unexpectedly favorable
reaction that the American public had for the Fightin' Whities name and
logo. This reaction illustrated to me how out of step the PC
crowd and the media is with Joe Mainstreet.
All funds received from the sell of team apparel goes to a scholarship
fund for Native Americans attending the college.
