Is it me or is this guys career being wasted? This guy was the 1st round 2nd overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft and yet he has not been given a chance to play. Yeah i agree the Detroit Pistons have very skilled players at the Center and Power Forward but this guy was the best player in the draft and many people thought that. He was picked behind Lebron James and before Carmelo Anthony so this would tell something about his skills. He was said to be a pure shooter and a good defender. He has appeared in 2 games this season and an average of 4 minutes a game. Is this really enough playing time for a man that was picked 2nd in the draftI think not. It was said that he is young so they will let him stay on the bench for a few years. Well the Pistons have the now starting Center and Power Forward under contract for the next 4 to 6 years. I just dont understand why would a team draft this guy and not give him a chance to play? Well i will never understand why somethings happen in the NBA or the NFL. But at least Dirk Nowitzkiand Peja Stojakovicare setting the stage for white players in the NBA now.

Everybody that sees him practice says that he's very
talented, but for whatever reason it doesn't translate
into success in actual games. At the 2004 NBA draft,
Jay Bilas went so far as to say that if he were in that
draft, he would've been the number one overall pick.
That's hard to imagine, given that Howard and
Okafor are both talented, athletic, and relatively tall
Blacks (obviously preferred over white players).
Then again, he was picked ahead of both Anthony
and Wade. Bilas is often very critical, and I doubt if
he's going to give a 19-year old European kid a free
pass. If he truly is that talented- and I honestly don't
know- then why shouldn't he be the back-up center to
Wallace? Elden Campbell and Antonio McDyess
aren't exactly "spring chickens" by NBA standards. I
read recently that he's "slowly moving up the depth
chart," and even Larry Brown said that he's "getting
better". It's not yet resulting in actual playing time,
unfortunately.

Howard is even younger and he's playing. And it's
not like he has to be a great scorer at this point in
time; they already have Hamilton, Billups, and
Rasheed Wallace to take on the scoring load. And
he could be playing beside good defenders like Ben
and Rasheed Wallace, and Tayshaun Prince. It
would seem like the perfect opportunity to learn the
ropes without a lot of pressure to be a star-caliber
player- unless he doesn't fit in with Larry Brown's
"system", which could very well be the case. Brown
has publicly insulted Darko, and he's developed a
reputation for not doing well with young players-
including talented black, Carmelo Anthony, while
coaching the Olympics. It's also been said that
Brown doesn't like the three-point shot, which may
hamper one of Darko's strengths. If he hasn't given
Darko the freedom to play the kind of game that suits
his talents (and that he spent three years developing
on a professional level in Europe), then it's no
wonder why he's struggled.

Maybe he just doesn't have a very good low-post
game. A lot of big guys are weak in that area. We're
way past the days of Patrick Ewing and Hakeem
Olajuwon. The game has changed. Why couldn't he
be a finesse player on the offensive end, and a
rebounder and defender at the other end? Dirk is an
excellent shooter and an excellent rebounder (and
not as bad a defender as people used to say); why
couldn't Darko be a spot-up shooter (not every
seven-footer is going to have an amazing
off-the-dribble game like Dirk) and solid rebounder/
defender? In the right system, that wouldn't be a
problem. Many guys get by on their ability to knock
down open shots and be competent defenders. If
that's the case, then maybe Detroit will mercifully let
him go after next year and he can go to a team where
he fits in better. That certainly wouldn't be the
worse-case scenario. If he ends up being
exceptional elsewhere, the fingers will be pointed
squarely at Larry Brown- which would be
entertaining.

(Imagine what could've happened to Dirk if he were
coached by someone who didn't let him develop his
perimeter game early in his career- and thought that
he was "too soft" on the defensive end to get playing
time. He had a tough first year, and then quickly
developed into a good player, and then into a star.
An awesome white talent could've been ruined.
Good thing Don Nelson and Donnie Nelson believed
in him and let him play his game, and not somebody
else's game.)

Unfortunately, I recently saw a photo of him with a
martini glass in his hand and his eyes glazed over.
Hopefully it's just an occasional thing, but the rumor
is that he's doing this often. That's not only
under-age drinking, but he could potentially harm his
conditioning by staying up late, depleting his body of
nutrients, etc. Not smart. Unless he's content with
making several million dollars and going back to
Europe, he should stop this.

Sorry to go on so long. Geez.

Wow, Darko played in the first half against Miami
last night! Thanks, Larry Brown!
smiley32.gif
Now if you
can eventually manage to string together ten
minutes every night for him, we'll be able to find out
where he's at in his development. Just two
half-quarters a game (and several minutes at a time,
not this a minute here, a minute there stuff).
Campbell plays 11-12 minutes a game. Just give
Darko half those minutes, and half of Derek
Coleman's minutes!)

And for crying out loud, let him shoot some jump
shots! He always gets the ball at the low block. It's
like they're trying to "transform" him into a low post
scorer/ conventional big man. If they can do it, so be
it. It would be quite a feat, and would ultimately prove
how talented Darko is- to go from a finesse shooter
to a low post big man. We may not know for a while
how successful that attempt will be. Dirk, Brad
Miller, Ilgauskas, Webber, Garnett, Duncan, all those
big men shoot jump shots.

According to the career stats page I was looking at,
last season he played 34 games- actually more than
I would've guessed. He averaged about two shot
attempts per outing. Someday he's going to have to
take more shots than that; he'll rarely get in a rhythm
with a measly two shot attempts per game (and,
once again, at least some of those shots should be
jump shots). He took one 3-point shot. They should
at least get him the ball on the baseline for some
mid-range jumpers. All big men shoot baseline
jumpers.

On a higher note, he did have a really cool dunk last
night. He stole the ball out on the perimeter, did a
little spin around the opposing player, sprinted to the
basket, and jumped somewhere around 10 feet
away from the basket and dunked. Of course he's
seven feet tall, so he was able to use his length to
traverse some of that distance, but it still surprised
me how far away from the rim he left the ground. At
the very least it showed some confidence and
cajones, because if he missed it, it would have been
quite an embarrassment. I hope we see many more
fun plays like that in the future for Darko Milicic.

Darko is leading the NBA in blocks for the preseason. Maybe now that Larry Brown is gone he will get a chance to develop.

Darkohastons of ability, just needs to play and learn the ropes. He wasted two years on the bench with very little court time.

"He's better than I thought he would be," Saunders said after the Pistons' two-hour practice Thursday evening. "And I thought he'd be pretty good."

Milicic has been impressive, so much so that Saunders is starting to wonder what all the negative talk had been about.

"He's playing pretty good," Saunders said. "He's been playing with the main guys and I think he's a lot stronger and obviously, playing on his national team (Serbia-Montenegro) this summer, he's in great condition."

"He's got guys banging him and he's calling for the ball and making some moves in there. He had a couple of great moves today.

"The thing he's done really well is defensive-rebound. He's a big-bodied guy, a real quick jumper and he's long."

If the Pistons want to increase their playoff hopes they had better get Milicic into the playing rotation and get him some minutes to keep the other Bigs rested, especially down the stretch (82 games is a long season). The Eastern Conference has gotten some more Bigs recently (O'neal in Miami being the prime example) so the time to use him off the bench is now. GO DARKO!

Darko came into the N.B.A. the same age as a player coming from high school. He went to a team that has to of the better players in the league at his positions. Of coarse he was not going to start. No only a few veterans would start over Ben Wallace and Shed. Look at Kwame Brown hes still given chances to start. The medias bashing of Darko is clearly Anti White. Darkos prime year are a long way away.

It's good to see him doing well and feeling confident. We weren't sure if his confidence, not to mention his career, would survive after Larry Brown was done with him.

But I'm not celebrating anything just yet. Apparently, at the moment, he's competing with a 6-5 rookie for the fourth frontcourt spot. So clearly he has a ways to go before being a starter, let alone a star. I'll continue rooting for him, like I have for the last two years.

Increase the Pistons' playoff chances in the Eastern
Conference ... which they've won the last two years?

Dario will be in the rotation as the fourth big man, behind
Wallace, Wallace and McDyess, with Dale Davis getting
minutes in the playoffs to foul Shaq.

Well they have a new coach now and the Eastern Conference has experienced an upgrade in talent recently. (Celtics re-emerging under the GMship of the Great Danny Ainge, Heat with Shaq, Nets with Vince Carter, Pacers are still pretty good, etc.) So I don't consider the Pistons an automatic shoe-in.

Well, now that we are in the regular season,Darko is sitting on the bench almost all of the time.He only played 1 minute in last nights game. They really need to trade this kid because he is too talented to sit. They are taking the heart right out of him!

From a Pistons fan -- So long, Darko. I hope you find your minutes and
stats on a bad team. You are a waste and an embarassment.

The jury is still out on whether Darko is a "waste and embarrassment". GLS..the man is still 21 years old and had little opportunity to show of his skills on a very deep pistons team..why so much hate for the guy?

Someone somewhere thought this kid has talent, and I can't wait to finally see him get a chance to play. His was brought into a horrible situation (for him) and unlike most players taken at #2 he didn't get to develop on a bad team (or even get minutes). I hope Orlando gives him a nice chunk of PT considering they aren't very good anyway...

Why dislike Darko? His work ethic is paltry, his attitude bad, his
production a joke. Maybe he should have spent less time in the clubs, and
more time in the gym?

He should get playing time at the PF and C positions. Orlando has nothing behind Tony Battie and Dwight Howard at those positions. Darko did lead the league in blocks this preseason ,and at the end of last season he started the last two games and recorded 25 points and 8 rebounds, not bad for someone who hung out on the bench all year. He's still a college age young man who is not even close to his prime. He will be a good player barring injury. Everyone was quick to call Robert Swift a bust ,and now that he is getting a little PT he is developing nicely at 20 years old. I believe Whites mature slower physically but improve longer, especially tall men.

Maybe his attitude is bad because of the shoddy treatment he got by the pistons and we all know why his production is bad, no PLAYING time.

How can we even say he's bad? He only had 5 minutes a game in Detroit.

Shoddy treatment by the Pistons? Huh? The veterans went out of their way
to help him and the club picked up the option on his contract -- worth
millions -- despite being one of the worst high draft choices in recent
memory. We should all be treated so shoddily.

He's "only" 21, but that's still older than Dwight Howard, who in
juxtaposition will make Darko look like the joke he is when they play
together in Orlando.

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? Does Darko suck because he
doesn't play, or does he not play because he flat out sucks? I'm going
with the latter.Edited by: GreatLakeState

The difference is that Dwight Howard got his chance to play immediately.Former pistons coach Larry Brown is not exactly a friend of the white athlete anyway..how come David Lee is not playing more on that hideously ugly knicks team?...you stated that the veterans went out of their way to help him...maybe so...last time I checked Rasheed, Chauncey and Ben are not in charge of playing time.
