Budinger swaps one net for another; basketball wins out

When Chase Budinger was in Las Vegas in April, playing in the
VisionSports Spring Showcase, he was uncertain what he
wanted to do with his post-high school athletic life.

Would he focus on basketball? Would he concentrate on
volleyball? Or would he attempt to play both sports in college?
If he decided on the latter, what school would allow him to
attempt that?

The 6-foot-7-inch senior-to-be from Carlsbad, Calif., is still
deliberating on where he'll attend college. But he has decided
he will focus strictly on basketball.

"I want to see how far I can take it," Budinger said Sunday after
his Southern Cal All-Stars routed West Anchorage of Alaska,
93-54, to open bracket play in the Open Division of the Big
Time Tournament at Coronado High School. "I love the game of
basketball and my dream is to play in the NBA."

Budinger has narrowed his list of potential schools to Arizona,
UCLA and Southern California. He said he is almost ready to
make his decision and will announce it right before he begins
his senior year at La Costa Canyon High.

"I'm constantly thinking about it," he said. "I want to make my
decision so I can enjoy my senior year."

Once Budinger makes his decision, the other nine Pacific 10
Conference teams are going to be busy trying to devise ways to
stop him on the court. He is an extremely versatile player who
can play either backcourt spot or either forward spot,
depending on the matchup. He's an excellent passer and has
great leaping ability, thanks in part to his years of volleyball
training.

Budinger, who averaged 20 points in three games of pool play
at the Big Time, said he hasn't totally given up volleyball. He's
just concentrating on basketball.

"I can always come back to (volleyball) if I want to," Budinger
said.

He is also coming back from a sprained right wrist suffered at
the NBA camp last month. The time off was a blessing.

"I needed a break," Budinger said. "It helped me mentally as
much as physically. It was good for me."

Budinger said the wrist is still tender and it sometimes flares up
when he drives to the basket. Coach Pat Barrett only played
Budinger 8 1/2 minutes in Sunday's rout of the Alaskans. But he
managed to compile nine points, three rebounds and two
assists. Budinger knows he'll play more minutes today when
his team plays in the round of 16 at 2:20 p.m. at Basic High.

"We know we can play better than we did in the pool play,"
Budinger said of the SoCal squad, which went 1-2, including
an 81-57 loss to defending champion Spiece Indy Heat. "We
didn't shoot well, but we'd like another shot at (Spiece)."
