If Sheriff Joe's cracking down on ills, then more power to him...because those vermin aren't U.S. citizens & are here ILLEGALLY to begin with. He's doing the job the BP won't/can't do. Although I'm not a fan of the police-state, I do appreciate some of Joe's hard@$$ demeanor towards the thugs...especially when crackin' down on the wets!

Arpaio to Be Investigated Over Alleged Violations

Daniel González, Arizona Republic (Phoenix), March 11, 2009

The U.S. Justice Department has launched a civil-rights investigation of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office after months of mounting complaints that deputies are discriminating in their enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Officials from the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division notified Sheriff Joe Arpaio on Tuesday that they had begun the investigation, which will focus on whether deputies are engaging in "patterns or practices of discriminatory police practices and unconstitutional searches and seizures."

Arpaio vehemently denies that deputies are illegally profiling as part of his immigration crackdowns. He said Tuesday that he welcomes the investigation and intends to cooperate fully.

Although Arpaio's illegal-immigration crackdowns have broad public support, they also have led to calls for an examination of his tactics.

Last year, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon asked for a federal investigation of possible civil-rights abuses. Last month, four key Democratic members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee asked Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to investigate Arpaio.

The lawmakers said Arpaio had exceeded the limits of a federal program that gives local police federal immigration-enforcement powers by ordering deputies to "scour" Latino neighborhoods looking for illegal immigrants based on skin color.

Arpaio, who was easily re-elected to a fifth term in November, called the investigation politically motivated and vowed to continue to arrest illegal immigrants.

Arpaio uses the sweeps to enforce the state's employer-sanctions and anti-smuggling laws. He also participates in a federal program that lets local officers enforce federal immigration laws. The sweeps have taken place in mostly Latino neighborhoods or near where day laborers congregate. They have sparked two racial-profiling lawsuits.

The Justice Department frequently receives racial-profiling complaints against police departments, but investigations are rare, said David Harris, a University of Pittsburgh law professor and racial-profiling expert.

Harris said this is the first civil-rights investigation stemming from immigration enforcement. The probe could last several months.

Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, the board's lone Democrat and most vocal critic of Arpaio's immigration policies, had planned to help deliver a petition today with 35,000 Internet signatures calling for a Justice Department investigation.

Only in America. The people of Maricopa County have voted multiple times by a majority to keep Sheriff Joe in power. We support what he is doing. Only problem is that too many liberal politicians both here and in D.C. don't like him sending illegals back to Mexico. What a joke! If you think this country is bad now, you don't want to see what it would be like with out more guys like Arpio. They are the last hope for all legal americans of every color.

Support your local sheriff, it's one of the few institutions that can stand against federal power grabs.

Seriously, make friends, go golfing, whatever. The county sheriff has a bunch of power within his jurisdiction --- if he has the courage to exercise it. Let him know that you support him in enforcing the PROPERLY-CONSTITUED laws, even when the federal government is doing a stare-down with him on some of their bogus mandates.Edited by: Observer

additionally, "reverend" Al Sharpton has threatened a protest if Arpaio doesn't resign, to which the Sheriff has basically told him to shove it.

Arpaio calls resignation demands ridiculous.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says calls for his resignation because of alleged racial profiling are "ridiculous" and that he will never step down.

The resignation demands came Tuesday from the Rev. Al Sharpton, president of the national Action Network, and Bertha Lewis, CEO and chief organizer of the social activist group ACORN. They accused Arpaio of racial profiling in his enforcement of immigration laws. Sharpton said Arpaio is carrying out "a reign of terror" with alleged civil and human rights violations ...

Sharpton said if Arpaio does not resign, he will hold a protest march next month in Phoenix.

Arpaio responded, "If they want to come down here, be my guest."

Arpaio said he is doing nothing wrong and an investigation, announced last month by the Justice Department, will clear him ...

Responding to allegations that he pursues suspected illegal immigrants on misdemeanors in an effort to determine their immigration status, Arpaio said, "Police go after misdemeanors all the time. Fifty-one percent of the people in my jails, booked by all cops, are misdemeanors. So why is everybody talking about going after violent crime? Everybody doesn't go after just violent crimes."

Sharpton, issuing his resignation demand in New York, said that, under Arpaio's immigration enforcement policies, "Any one of color is being pulled over and harassed. People are being made to carry their citizenship papers around. And that's racial profiling."

Sharpton also called for an end to the 287G program, under which local law enforcement officers are authorized to enforce federal immigration laws.

Reaction to Sharpton's statements by Valley minority leaders was mixed ... [
