Since 2006, USC has started 8, 6, 7, 5, 6, 6, 3, 5, 4, 6, 6, 5, 6, 3, 4, and 4 white players. In 2022, they project to start 6.

New head coach Lincoln Riley shocked the college football world by ditching a cushy gig at Oklahoma to sign a movie star contract at USC. There was a risk that Riley could lose his mystique by facing stiffer competition in the SEC, so he turned tail for the Pac 12, which has an easier path to a playoff berth. The joke was on him, though, as USC announced a move to the Big Ten, where they will face at least a few tough matchups every year. Regardless, Riley will look to use a massive budget to sign recruits and become the first successful celebrity coach in LA since Pete Carroll. This time around, paying players will be legal. Unfortunately for Riley, everyone else can do it too. Time will tell how this move affects his reputation as a top-tier coach.

Out of 85 scholarship players, roughly HALF of them will be new to the roster in 2022. This is an incredible turnover that obviously could lead to some friction and failure to gel, especially early on. However, Coach Riley rolled out the red carpet and arranged the payment of big bucks for, among others, his pet black quarterback from Oklahoma and an All-American wide receiver from Pitt.

While six starters is fairly lofty both by Riley and USC’s recent standards, there isn’t much to cheer for on this team. Lake McCree inherits the starting TE role, Nick Figueroa held off the affletes on the DE depth chart, and the OL somehow ended up with four cornfed road graders after starting just one (Vorhees) last season. The defensive cabinet is remarkably bare going forward, save for freshman Utah transfer Carson Tabaracci.

It’s too early to tell how Riley will recruit going forward, and he’s just as likely to overhaul his roster each year by bidding via NIL deals on handpicked stopgaps. My expectations aren’t high, though.

Starters:
TE: Lake McCree
OL: Andrew Vorhees, Jonah Monheim, Justin Dedich, Bobby Haskins

DE: Nick Figueroa

Backups to watch:
QB: Miller Moss
TE: Jude Wolfe, Ethan Rae
OL: Cooper Lovelace, Andrew Milek, Caadyn Stephen, Joe Bryson

LB: Carson Tabaracci
