Since 2005, the Huskies have started 8, 6, 6 ,8 ,8 ,7, 8, 7, 8, 8, 8, 6, 6, and 5 white athletes (the 2020 season was cancelled due to a “pandemic”). In 2022, they are projected to start (4) 6.

UConn is a pretty dismal football program despite being a large state school without nearby competitors. Former coach Randy Edsall had some success in his initial stint with the team, but retired just two games into last season with a comeback record of 6-32. The Huskies proceeded to finish last season 1-11.

Former Atlanta Falcons and UCLA Bruins coach (and NFL Network commentator) Jim L. Mora takes over the reins this year. Mora has some name recognition, which is about as much as this dumpster fire of a program could have hoped for. He will presumably have a long leash since there is no pedigreed coaching alternative willing to take the job (and because he can’t possibly do any worse). On the field, Mora is bringing in about seven new starters this year via the transfer portal, which isn’t surprising as the vast majority of recruits on the roster were ranked as 2-stars.

The quarterback and running back depth charts are completely black. There are a couple of white freshman RB’s on the roster in Clark and Rosa, but it’s tough to tell whether or not they’re viable (Rosa did entertain a few low-end power conference offers, so he’s a likelier shot to see the field in the future).

Jacob Flynn is a backup slot receiver who may receive a few looks over the course of the season. Mark Didio, Jr.’s father holds the school records for catches receiving yards, but a lot has changed since 1991, so the younger version of this all-time great is a walk-on with no hope of competitive snaps.

On defense, Webb, Bechtle, and McCarthy are all in line for plenty of snaps, but none are currently projected to start. The back end of the depth chart is completely up in the air all over the defensive side of the ball, but unfortunately there just aren’t that many white athletes around to be considered.

Mora will probably use his name recognition and NFL ties to recruit a slightly higher grade of black players from around the nation rather than focusing on recruiting New England (from what I can tell, he’s never lived or coached anywhere near the area). There’s no telling what the roster will look like next year: the quarterback room is grim, yet all the white players listed below save Guidone have at least another year of eligibility.

Starters:
TE: Brandon Niemenski
OL: Valentin Senn, Christopher Fortin, Jake Guidone

Backups to watch:
RB: Victor Rosa, Hunter Clark
TE: Russell Dixon, Bo Estes, Justin Joly, Brendan Heatherman
WR: Jacob Flynn, Mark Didio Jr.
OL: Mason Raymer, Danny Antolovich, Jesse Polanski, Will Meyer, Dayne Shor, Chase Lundt

DL: Carter Hooper, Collin McCarthy
LB: Hunter Webb, John Bechtle

WR Mark Didio Jr.'s father played for the Steelers very briefly in 1992. He was one of the zillions of talented White receivers screwed over by the NFL. He had hands like glue, reminiscent of Mike Hass and looked great in preseason games. But 1992 was Bill Cowher's first year as head coach and it's almost a miracle that Didio had 3 catches in the '92 regular season before being cut and out of the league as Cowher modeled his teams after Jimmy Johnson in Dallas, in other words no Whites need apply.

UConn is actually playing six white starters. They use two tight ends in their primary package: Dixon is mostly a pass-catcher, while Niemenski splits between blocking and running routes. Guidone, Senn, and Lundt are starters on the O-line, with Fortin rotating in often and even lining up in six-man lines.

The nicest surprise is 6'7, 253 lbs DT Collin McCarthy, who won his positional battle and has immediately emerged as one of the best players on the (albeit mediocre) defensive unit. He has 2-3 more years of eligibility, and it will be interesting to see how he fills out in preparation for a possible pro career. UConn plays an odd 3-3-5 formation; McCarthy excels at pushing the pile forward as a 3-tech "oversized DE."

Sophomore Cale Millen is now the backup QB - hopefully, he can get some series in this year.
