Whydo blacks have a fascination with dancing? iLIer ThanU thinks whites miss the beat so they don't dance well. Jim Brown who also has a thing about dancing once wrote that blacks are not right on top the beat as are whites but slightly off being able to anticipate better or something along those lines.Five hundred whites in a club and not one can dance? I do notice while driving, that many times I'll see blacks dancing while waiting for a bus or even while moving a shopping cart in a store. I have never done that in my life.

And just for the record, there are plenty of LATINO people who can
shake it with the best of black dancers. And most of the Latinos I know
are not mestizos of whtie and BLACK heritage, they're white and

Don, although I really like where Jaxvid was going and was thinking of branching out from there I will curtail my procliivities and bring this thread back to it's original focus.
Willie Davis formerly a lineman with the Lombardi era Packers was a congenial fellow who who wouldn't make you nervous in a dark alley. He liked jokimg with fellow team mates and even made himself the brunt of jokes in a good natured way. I saw a video of a Packer old timers gathering. Hornung and Davis really packed on the pounds over the years, good gosh did they get heavy. Willie said the photographer asked him to pose for a group picture of himself. Hahahaha! Did you ever notice how hard it is to dislike anyone in any field who smiles and makes jokes about themselves?

White Shogun, I agree with you. Did you ever see those modern ball room dancing shows on PBS, they dance to all kinds of styles, they move very well and they are white. I, of course never intentionally tune in to watch, just catch bits and pieces while channel surfing.

A guy that always gives his best to the point of injury. If he didn't try so hard he might be several million dollars richer--which is why I think he earned special consideration.
Blast from the Past: Leroy Butler. If you don't know why, you don't know him very well. This is the guy who took less money (literally! not just cap manipulations) when he was about the best safety in the league to help us get better players.

I mentioned in my post on John Riggins that my favorite runner was Jim Brown. It might surprise younger fans that Brown had a very positive image during most of his playing career. He had a reputation much like Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith, or like most of the white sports stars ofhis era. He was known as "Jimmy Brown" during most of his playing days, and was called that by writers and announcers.
Brown didn'ttake a "black militant" stance until he put out a book in 1964, his eight season. This book (mild by today's standards, though)was ghosted by Myron Cope. He first had a publicized off-field incident in 1965, his last year of football. Brown really went into the "bad, arrogant Jim Brown" persona went he went to Hollywood.
Incidentally, Brown readily praises the white football players he played with and against. The football player he most criticized was O.J. Simpson (for being a phony). Also, Franco Harris for running out of bounds.

Brown threatened to come out of retirement when it looked like Franco Harris would break his all-time rushing yardage mark. Brown was 48 at the time. He had nothing but contempt for Harris's pioneering style of running out of bounds like a girl to avoid contact.
Harris faded quickly before he could best Brown's mark. They settled their grudge in a good-natured way by facing off in a 40 yard dash which was televised nationally live. Harris won but with a very slow time.

Harris had an Italian mother (they met in Italy during WWII), thus the huge "Franco's Italian Army" among Steelers fans in heavily Italian Pittsburgh during the glory days of the '70s. He was a bit militant in his early years in the NFL, and stated that he considered himself black. He stayed in Pittsburgh and long ago became a fixture in the community. He still does commercials for Pittsburgh companies and is as establishment as can be.
Don or Sports Historian, I was wondering if either of you hadseen Joe Schmidt Play for the Lions. Jerry Glanville was doing a game and for some reason went on and on about how great a tackler and linebacker Schmidt had been. He said when Joe faced the Browns, Jim Brown never had a good game, Joe would focus on Brown and bring him to the ground every time. Glanville said Joe could tackle anybody any where, didn't matter how big, fast or stronghis opponent was. Any insights?

Oh yes, I remember Joe Schmidt when he played. In his 1964 book, Jim Brown said, "Schmidt has the best tackling technique I have ever seen. When Schmidt tackles you, you're tackled." Another time, I saw where Brown said that " the Lions and the Giants played me tougher than anyone." Schmidt and the Lions held Brown to 69 yards in 20 carries in the 1957 Title Game. In 1963, the year Brown rushed for 1863 yards, The Lions held him to 61 yards in a game that knocked Cleveland out of the race in 1963. Glanville was right in the above quote.

There's a reserve defensive end, Jerome McDougle--who happens to be black--from the Philadelphia Eagles who won kudos from me forever by introducing Whiny Little Eli to the NFL by getting his first NFL sack on a beautiful smackdown of Eli that forced a fumble. Oh, was that good to see! I have it on videotape and play it reguarily for all my friends. His daddy, perhaps the main instigator of this debacle, thought his poor little quiche-eating son might have been killed on that play--which makes me enjoy it all the more. It was perhaps one of the best 'jacked-up' plays I've ever seen, with all of the rest in the background considered.
Peyton coulda told his brother to man up, as he is one of the top guys in the NFL, but he demurred. Personally I want his career interrupted by some guy, like say Erasmus James or David Pollack who never snivelled about where they went even if it was the Bungles or Minnesota Chokers. I'd like to see justice done in the NFL, if no one else does.....

own interests first. The problem is, whenever any white player attempts
to assert himself in this manner, in the same way that EVERY black
player is expected to assert himself at all times, the white media and
the white fans instantly hate him, use terms like "crybaby" and
"selfish" to describe him, and never forgive him no matter how great he
becomes. We had a player in my town who was treated this way a decade
ago. Heath Shuler was the #1 pick of the Redskins, and because he had a
not especially long holdout (as the majority of black #1 picks do every
year), the white media and white fans instantly began hating him. They
had no patience with him, booing his every incompletion, and he was
soon run out of town without ever being given a fair chance. Shuler was
a really nice guy (he even had an off-field incident where he saved a
woman's life at an airport, but it did nothing to improve his public
image), but he was never forgiven for holding out in his rookie season.
Eli Manning is, by all accounts, a pleasant, exceptionally well-behaved
young man. His brother Peyton seems like a nice guy, too. Father Archie
(who was also unfairly lambasted in the media, as "controlling" his
son-compare this to the way the father of the Williams sisters, who is
a real control freak and not a well-mannered man, has been treated by
the media) was an underrated QB who, like his sons, seems far more
intelligent and civilized than any black player I can think of, past or
present. Why is it you object to the "sniveling" Eli Manning? Why do I
hear those terms to describe him, but not to describe despicable and
truly selfish jerks like Terrell Owens? This idiot, holding out
selfishly once again, will never be called those names by white fans or
the jock-sniffing media, and once he returns to the field, will not be
booed and will be cheered for every overrated play he makes. When I
think of "selfish," I think of Owens, or Deion Sanders, or Kellen
Winslow, Jr., or countless other arrogant idiots with incredibly
swollen notions of their own self-worth. Not a single white player,

Good reply bigunreal, I think Highwayman's attack on Eli Manning was uncalled for. There is nothing wrong with trying to control one's own future, it only makes sense. Manning seems like a good kid and I see no reason to attack him for his desire to choose who to work for. And yes, a huge Urlacher hit on Winslow would be sweet!
How about a huge Keith Brooking hit on Donovan McNabb or John Lynch ending Terrell Owen's career. I wouldn't mind seeing Brian Urlacher beat the pulp out of his new teammate Cedric "cry baby" Benson. Hey Highwayman I bet your one of those Ohio State fans who would always put down Dustin Fox when ever he gave up a pass(which was rare) even if it was only for 10 yards, your type would always call for a switch to safety.
