Logan Wilson, an early third round draft pick in 2020, suffered through a racial apprenticeship his rookie season though he did see the field somewhat as a backup before an injury derailed him for the last few games of the 2020 season. He ended up with 23 solo tackles, 10 assists, 2 interceptions and a sack. This year he'll be starting on the Bengals' 4-3; most depth charts have him at WLB though he should be in the middle.

The Bengals are also unique in that they will have Sam Hubbard and Trey Hendricksen as their two starting ends this season after signing Hendricksen. Given the very thin gruel the NFL offers on defense, they may be the best team to root for on defense this season. Remember a decade ago when all four All-Pro defensive ends were White? As always, such things are treated as outliers and embarrassments, rather than as a talent pool to be developed.

Here's an article on Wilson:

Bengals: Logan Wilson is poised for a breakout season in 2021

by Leigh Oleszczak

The Cincinnati Bengals‘ linebacker units haven’t been anything to write home about in recent years and that still appears to be the case heading into 2021. Hopefully, the Bengals outperform their projection by PFF where they put Cincinnati linebackers second-to-last on their rankings.

A big part of the Bengals linebackers taking a step in the right direction in 2021 is if second-year man Logan Wilson improves mightily from his rookie campaign. Wilson, a third-round pick out of Wyoming last year, appeared in 12 games as a rookie and started two of them. He totaled 33 tackles (four for loss), three defended passes, two interceptions, two quarterback hits, and one sack during that time.

There was certainly glimpses of potential from Wilson during his rookie season and that’s why he was dubbed as the Bengals’ most under-the-radar player by Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports.

With linebacker Josh Bynes no longer on the Bengals roster, that does open the door for linebacker Logan Wilson to take a larger role within the defense. He was starting to find a groove towards the end of last season, but an injury in Week 14 sidelined him for the rest of the year. So long as he stays healthy, there’s a lot to like about the Wilson heading into 2021, where he could develop into an every down linebacker.

The Bengals should expect big things from Logan Wilson in 2021.
As Sullivan mentioned, Wilson was injured late in the year and that put the brakes on what looked to be a promising rookie season. He’ll also have more opportunities to make plays in 2021 because Bynes isn’t with the team anymore, opening things up for Wilson to make more of a splash.

Stripe Hype’s own Glenn Adams spoke highly of Wilson when discussing the poor PFF ranking. He said:

While PFF might not have any Bengals in their top 32 entering the 2021 season, there are not too many young linebackers better than Logan Wilson.

This is right on the money.

Good young linebackers are hard to find and the Bengals look to have one on their roster in Wilson. Staying healthy is obviously key but considering the production the team saw out of him last year, there’s definitely a reason for optimism that Wilson can have a breakout season in year No. 2.

The Bengals need their linebackers to bring it if they’re going to compete in the brutal AFC North and Wilson is expected to help lead the charge in that department. If he can make an impact against some of the top-notch run games in the division, Wilson will go from relative unknown to a much bigger name in the NFL.

Agreed that Bengals Defense should be fun to watch. Also agree Wilson will improve.

Hopefully Wyatt Hubert makes the team as well - would be a nice 3 man rotation with Hendrickson, Hubbard and Hubert.

The Bengals need to solidify the o-line - looking forward to seeing a healthy Joe Burrow.

More praise for Logan Wilson. Should be time to start a thread on him soon:

Logan Wilson gets a shoutout as a standout Bengals defender so far

by Chris Roling

Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and other offensive weapons were on the receiving end of the most hype coming out of Cincinnati Bengals workouts recently.

But what about the defense?

There are plenty of question marks there too given the rebuilt defensive line and secondary.

One name who quietly made some noise? Linebacker Logan Wilson.

A third-round pick last year, Wilson got into 12 games for the Bengals and flashed some of that upside that had fans whispering about him possibly being the future of the linebacker position for the team.

And in a somewhat passing bit of remarks, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo seemed to hint at that coming out of OTAs, as captured by ESPN’s Ben Baby:

"Bengals DC Lou Anarumo praised LB Logan Wilson's communication. Seems entrenched as the starting middle LB heading into training camp."

It’s an encouraging bit of news on the Wilson front as the team expects him to take the proverbial next step as a sophomore. Odds are he’ll see even more usage and have his list of responsibilities grow.

If this early bit of feedback is any sign, Wilson should make some more headlines during training camp.

Logan Wilson is instinctive, he's athletic, smart and has a history of productivity in college. He's a probable Pro Bowl caliber player.

Latest update on Wilson:

Logan Wilson 'noticeably faster' at Cincinnati Bengals training camp

The Cincinnati Bengals have big expectations for second-year linebacker Logan Wilson, hence giving him in the communications headset and not signing any veterans to take away some snaps. Wilson has responded in kind so far in training camp, looking improved in a number of areas as he follows his natural developmental arc.

Not too far removed from having a breakout day while the offense struggled, Wilson just caught the attention of onlookers merely for his speed. Here’s Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic:

“At least once a day, I look down at my notes and see “55TFL.” That’s a tackle for loss by Logan Wilson. He’s hitting the gaps in the run game noticeably faster this year. He has been given the green dot for coach communication, and that confidence in him physically and mentally is spilling over to his playing style. He came in with the reputation as a skilled cover ‘backer and that still remains, but his lines of attack and anticipation in the run game has shown up through 10 practices.”

Without a Josh Bynes on the roster to soak up snaps now, the Bengals will need Wilson to show up big in the heart of the defense. While he’s also flashed well in coverage, it’s notable that he’s looking quite a bit improved in more traditional areas. If Wilson has a full-blown breakout as a sophomore, it’s a great sign for the entire defense.

Waynes was not that good in Minnesota either. A nice little mess the Bengals have put themselves in by gifting roster spots to two mediocre 1st round draft picks (Waynes 11th overall in that epic bust draft of 2015) and the well traveled Eli Apple who flamed out after 2 years with the Giants and is now on his 4th team since entering the league as the 10th overall pick in 2016.

Bengals CB Trae Waynes (hamstring) won't play in Week 1 against the Vikings.

Waynes has yet to play a game for Cincinnati since striking a three-year, $42 million deal with the organization last offseason. Eli Apple, who was cut from both the Panthers and Raiders for conditioning reasons last year, will instead be on the field and assigned either Justin Jefferson or Adam Thielen in coverage. It's a disastrous development for a defensive unit that was already facing an uphill battle in talent discrepancy.

Carson Palmer took time off from his long-time vendetta against White receivers (that's a joke, not a cue for any remaining cult members to bash Palmer) to opine that Joe Burrow may not re-sign with Cincy because of the team's pathetic offensive line that causes him to take a ridiculous beating.

Valid point and pressure is on for Cincinnati to draft/sign some FA help for Burrow! Ridiculous amount of hits on him early in his career.

Hopefully Reiff returns to full health. Plenty of White OL available as well in the draft.

Agreed. I'm assuming OL coach will be canned?! Maybe their runs of sumos will come to an end.

they drafted 2 or 3 last year. They need another TE as well. draft a fullback/h-back too.

During the Super Bowl they had a graphic up on all the defensive acquisitions and I am pretty sure Al Michaels made no mention of Hendrickson or just stated his name and did not mention his great season at all. Hendrickson was there best free agent signing.

I guess Rabbi Al thinks that 14 sacks is boring when accomplished by a White man. I’m sure he was giddy to mention any minor achievements made by a D’Quandry or a LaShawn.

I still can’t believe more was not made of 1st round bust Vernon Hargreaves running onto the field in street clothes after the interception.

It’s definitely good advice from Palmer and something Burrow should keep in mind before signing a long term contract. Hopefully he has a lot more leverage and influence than Palmer ever had after leading his team to the super bowl his first year. I don’t know if Burrows knees could make it through another season like that again despite his toughness.

In the upcoming NFL draft the Bengals should take offensive linemen in the first three rounds. They've got an elite quarterback on their team and their priority should be to protect him.

They should give strong consideration to white offensive linemen, who are annually underrated.

Cincy has been connected to guys like Bozeman, Jensen, Scherff, and Norwell for their OL. And some sumos too. I really hope they have AT LEAST 3 of our guys on the OL next year. 4 is preferable but with 3 entrenched starters on defense I’m okay with only 3 I guess. Sadly their DWF fans love the idea of replacing bad dumps with better ones.

Really hope Jonah Williams stays at LT next year (rumors say they could move him to RT if they get a new LT, which makes no sense since he was by far their best lineman), and then becomes entrenched.

Here's an article throwing Scherff in the mix for Cincinnati. If they land Scherff, Williams to RT would be a viable option!

Great news for the Bengals and Joe Burrow, bad news for Tom Brady:

Bengals signed RG Alex Cappa, formerly of the Bucs, to a four-year, $40 million contract.
The signing won't be official until the official opening of free agency on March 16. Tom Brady will lose his standout starting right guard to Joe Burrow and the Bengals, who have plenty of cap space and are expected to make massive upgrades to their shoddy offensive line.

Bengals sign LG Ted Karras away from the Patriots. Looks like they learned something from last season!

Not so bad for Tom Brady. He gets Jensen back, and I expect Hainsey to be Cappa’s successor. A year to strengthen and learn the ins and outs of the NFL should do it.

Awesome to see them get both Karras and Capps. Hope Reiff comes back for at least a 4/5. Glad they learned. Meanwhile the DWFs who wanted sumos like Armstead, Tomlinson, Daniels, etc. must be in shambles. Things you LOVE to see! Protect Joe Burrow at all costs!

And just like that, the Bengals have a majority White O-line! Taylor is no fool and look for Burrow to get even better. I’d say he’ll be in MVP contention this year.
