Dicky Lyons Jr.'s career is over. Has torn knee ligaments.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3641665

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Dicky Lyons Jr. was supposed to be the vocal veteran leader to bridge the gap between a dynamic passing attack that won two straight Music City Bowls and a cast of young but talented replacements for the Kentucky Wildcats.

But that plan was derailed Monday morning with an MRI that showed Lyons tore two ligaments in his right knee while making a catch during the Wildcats' 24-17 loss to South Carolina.

The prognosis was grim both for Lyons himself and a Kentucky team that has failed to find the offensive magic to approach that of the two last two seasons, when quarterback Andre Woodson, receivers Keenan Burton and Steve Johnson, and tight end Jacob Tamme joined Lyons as playmakers.

Lyons' season and collegiate career are over. Surgery to repair the posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments will keep him sidelined for eight months to a year, coach Rich Brooks said.

"He's devastated," Brooks said. "You know what kind of personality he is, how much this all meant to him. Tough thing. It's not how anybody envisioned this would end for him at Kentucky."

Lyons, son of former Kentucky superstar Dicky Lyons Sr., finished his career with 141 catches for 1,752 yards and 18 touchdowns. This year, his 33 receptions equaled those of the next two highest totals combined, and he had a team-high 264 receiving yards and two touchdown catches. He also handled 20 of the team's 23 kickoff returns.

"Dicky was the most consistent thing probably we had going on offense, the most consistent receiver we've up to this point," linebacker Micah Johnson said. "You easily rely on if you get the ball in his vicinity, he'll catch it. Somebody else is going to have to step up. He's not the only receiver we've got on scholarship."

Kentucky (4-2, 0-2) hosts Arkansas on Saturday, coached by former Louisville coach Bobby Petrino, before a brutal stretch of games against Southeastern Conference powerhouses Florida, Georgia and Tennessee along with much-improved Vanderbilt.

As for Lyons' chances of catching on with an NFL team despite the injury, Brooks said it's too early to tell. Lyons' 5-11, 190-pound frame is smaller than most pro teams consider optimal for a receiver, but his coach said he thinks Lyons could still make an impact as a return man.

"There's a resume on tape everyone can evaluate," Brooks said.

it seems Iowa's Andy Brodell is fully healthy again. he's had scoring catches of longer than 30 yards for three games in a row.

*******************************************

i've been keeping both of these guys in the list all season, but here's a nice piece about Johnny Spevak (that also mentions Charly Martin). Spevak and Martin are currently 1-2 in receiving yards per game in D-II (also in the top 5, North Dakota's Brady Trenbeath is #4, and Garrett Manning of Henderson St. is #5).

CWU's Spevak catching on as a receiver, not a QB

One incompletion revealed the truth.
No, Johnny Spevak was never really a quarterback. He filled that role at Puyallup High School for three seasons, and even led the Vikings to SPSL South titles and playoff berths.

But one early November evening, the transition started.

Spevak's throwing shoulder was aching so bad, it was finally determined he separated it. He still played in a first-round Class 4A state playoff game against Kentwood, but was limited.

In the second half, he came out playing a new position - wide receiver. And on a halfback pass, Spevak sprinted down the field, jumped between two defenders - with one healthy arm - and almost came down with what would have been a spectacular catch.

Spevak never played quarterback again.

As a receiver at Central Washington University, he's the leading pass catcher in the country at the NCAA Division II level.

So far this season, the junior has four 100-yard receiving games in five outings, including a seven-catch, 136-yard performance in Saturday's 38-35 loss at Montana, a powerhouse at the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) level.

He's caught at least one touchdown pass in every game.

His 692 receiving yards this season leads Division II. Charly Martin, of West Texas A&M, is No. 2 with 671.

"I didn't want to play quarterback," Spevak said "It was cool in high school. But I knew I couldn't throw the ball."

Then-Puyallup coach Jeff Gardner had no option when Spevak came to high school, so he made him a quarterback.

When Tom Ingles took over as coach, he stuck with Spevak, who was effective in running the option.

But it wasn't where he wanted to be. In fact, at summer camps, instead of working out with quarterbacks, he'd go out with the receivers.

Spevak admitted, from a skill-set standpoint, he was raw and way behind the other receivers when he arrived at Central in 2005. But the veteran receivers, including Clover Park High product Brian Potucek, gave him tips and helped him learn quickly.

Route-running was a huge emphasis. He struggled early trying to get by defenders who pressed him in coverage. Slowly, he began to understand how to read defenses and trust his footwork.

Last season, Spevak was Mike Reilly's favorite target, racking up 92 catches for 1,210 yards and 14 touchdowns, all team highs.

"I think I run pretty good routes," Spevak said. "I see certain coverages now and do certain things against them. Teams don't press me too much."

Late in the game against Montana, Spevak got behind the secondary, including standout safety Colt Anderson, and hauled in a 56-yard touchdown pass from Reilly.

"I thought playing Montana was a good test. With the bigger schools ... once you're out there, it was just football," Spevak said. "I wanted to see how big a step up it was, and looking at the score, skill-position wise, it was pretty even. I thought we matched up well."

Damn it! I thought Lyons could make a great slot guy in the NFL. Maybe he'll make a rebound as a UDFA in the NFL. We can only hope. Tearing the PCL and MCL is very serious though, he may be finished.

We still have Decker, Shipley, Brodell and Meyer though. Shipley, Decker and Brodell all project as Split Ends and Meyer as a Flanker. All four should get drafted.

Meyer will have to work on his speed a bit though, he only runs a 4.6 which is only enough for a black prospect.

Hey, at least he's tall, which seems to help with whites getting drafted!

i am sure that he will get a look from NFL IF, and that's a big IF, he recovers fully without losing any speed.

ProFootballWeekly had a short blurb on Dicky Lyons this morning. it shows the kind of double standard white kids are dealing with yet again.

Kentucky senior WR Dicky Lyons Jr. ended his collegiate career against South Carolina last weekend when he tore the posterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his right knee while being tackled after making a catch in the second quarter. Size, durability and character concerns could seriously limit his draft status.

this knee injury is major, but it's the only injury "concern" in his career as testified by the fact he's had 50-plus receptions as both a sophomore and junior and at the time of his injury had twice as many catches as the next Kentucky player this season.

furthermore, his "character concerns" of course don't involve any criminal acts. no, sir. they are strictly resulting from his goofy personality. perhaps if he'd beat up his girlfriend the NFL scouts would appreciate him a bit more.

Maybe if Lyons was caught hazing freshmen, slapping hoes, or riding around Lexington blasting 50 Cent from a Cadillac on 22s he'd jell with the locker room atmosphere a lot better.

watching the San Jose St-Boise St game tonight, freshman receiver Josh Harrison caught my eye. despite suffering from a lack of a horrendously poor quarterback, it is obvious Harrison has the ability to become a big-time wideout. that is, if anyone on SJSU's roster can learn to throw the football.

in high school, Harrison had personal bests of 10.68 in the 100-meters, 21.50 in the 200-meters, and 23-feet 7.75-inches in the long jump. he is a tremendous athlete.

Loved the catch by White who flashed some real speed on the play.

I noticed too that Ryan Allison, a former top wide receving recruit , got the start at linebacker. Although he is already a senior, this kid is a real athlete and could be a comer at OLB.

Nate Swift, who has a genuine opportunity to make an NFL roster next season, burned Baylor for a 53 yard TD.

Ryan Allison from Michigan State is an incredibly physically gifted athlete. but apparently he suffers from the same ailment that so many of his melanin-challenged peers do.

that being, he's good at so many different positions, that coaches can't settle on just one. so they make up for it by ruining the player's career while keeping him on the sideline for most of it.

Cory McCaffrey had 1 catch for 0 yards for Portland State today. That gives him 2 catches for 3 yards on the season.
The woesome Vikings have been blown out in most of their games this season. Perhaps Jerry Glanville ought to rethink his personnel usage. There doesn't seem to have been any reason to burn Cory's redshirt. He's only played in two games and they don't throw to him when he's on the field.
The #16 all-time running back in national high school football deserves better than this team and this coach.

stats are updated.

also, Jack Phelan of tiny Hartwick College in Division III has broken his own record this year for most receiving yards in a game. he had 311 yards receiving (breaking his own record for this season's top receiving yardage total with 289 yards) and 4 touchdowns on 14 catches.

Phelan now has 3 of the Top 5 yardage totals in the nation this season. and if i added things up right, in just 6 games he's scored 17 receiving touchdowns (including at least 1 in every game) and totalled 1,056 yards on just 49 catches.

There are now 7 whites in the top 25 in receiving yardage in the FBS. Austin Collie is 2nd, Eric Decker is 6th, James Casey is 9th, Chase Coffman is 18th, Jordan Shipley is 20th, Ryan Wolfe is 24th, and Kerry Meier is tied for 25th.

the dis-proportionate representation of white athletes at the top in receiving yards is present in the FBC ( Division IAA), as well. roughly half of the spots in the Top 25 are taken by white men.

John Matthews is 3rd, Cameron Luke is 5th, Tysson Poots is 6th, Marc Mariani is 7th, Tim Toone is 8th, Pat Simonds is 10th, Dan Skelly is 15th, Shaun Pasternak is 16th, Bobby Sewall is 19th, Brady Trenbeath is 20th, Mario D'Ambrosio is 21st, and Matt Luft is 24th.

you'd think more coaches would recruit wide receivers who can get open and catch the ball.

Yeah it's almost mind boggling that they won't try him at RB, which is his true position it would seem from his stellar, and I mean absolutely stellar, H.S career!
