a small-school guy has gotten DraftDaddy's attention... Valparaiso's Steve Ogden, only a sophomore, has accumulated 748 receiving yards (19.2 YPC ave.) and 6 TD's for Valpo in 8 games. In 2005, as a freshman, he averaged 22.3 yards per catch, so he's definitely a bigtime playmaker at the DI-AA level.

i wonder if he is related to Jeff Ogden, another victim of the caste system...

True freshman receiver Brad Kanuch is slowly working himself into some playing time at UCONN. He has gotten into the last four games and has 9 rec for 158 yds (17.5 ypc) for the third leading receiver on the team.

We followed Brad in the High School section during the recruiting process and he is one heck of an athlete. He was a 1,000 yd rusher as a running back in high school and was the Pennsylvania state champion in the 200m, Triple Jump, and second in the 100m. Ran the second fastest 40 time nationwide of any kid attending the Nike camps last year with a 4.26 sec time.

According to this article, Kanuch Gaining Confidence, he is still learning the transition from RB to WR. I hope he continues to progress at UCONN.

Gee, I wonder why he couldn't play running back?
smiley2.gif

it's because he has a debilitating skin condition knwon as "being white"! the disease completely prevents him from carrying the ball. and eventually, it will become so bad as to prevent him from catching it, as well.

that is, unless he follows through with the only acceptable way to combat the disease: vastly enhancing his caloric intake in order to become much, much heavier. then, and only then, will he possibly be able to fight off the effects of his horrifyingly debilitating skin conditon and touch the ball once in a while as a tight end.

it's like it's a crime equivalent to "driving while black"... "carrying the ball while white"

seriously, though, i saw him play the other day on ESPN. their team sucks! that's about all i remember about the game. that, and his name has an unusual pronunciation.

also, i just checked him out on the ol' "intra-web" and according to Rivals and Scout.com he was labelled as an "athlete" or a cornerback in the recruiting process. now it would seem that at his size (6'0", 182) and with his athletic ability, he would be a much more likely fit at corner or tailback, coincidentally the two positions he played in high school. so what reason did the coaching staff "really" have to move him to wide receiver? hmmm...Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

BYU's true-freshman receiver McKay Jacobson caught the first two TDs of his career on Saturday against UNLV.

UNLV is struggling this year, going with a two-quarterback system. but they have two young wide receivers who many of us have been overlooking... true freshman Ryan Wolfe and sophomore Casey Flair.

one or the other has led the Rebels in receiving every game so far this season. Wolfe has even set the UNLV freshman receiving record with a 6-catch, 160-yard 1-TD game, and then re-wrote it already with a 9-catch, 176-yard, 2-TD performance.

here's a couple of pics of Ryan and Casey...

another guy that we haven't been following very closely is SMU's Bobby Chase. the senior has been the Mustangs' offensive MVP the last two seasons, but despite being the team's best deep threat, he is having a bit of a down year so far as the #2 option in the passing game with 26 catches for 369 yards and 2 TDs.

a couple of guys still flying under the national radar are Iowa State's Todd Blythe and Minnesota's Logan Payne.

Blythe is easily the top receiver in the Big 12, but is having a pedestrian year so far... at least for him. he has 30 catches for 436 yards and 7 TDs, but has yet to have a truly explosive day, having not topped the 100-yard mark in a game thus far this season.
toddblythe.jpg

meanwhile, Minnesota's Payne has been killing opposing secondaries... until recently. the Gophers' misfortune on the field is in large part due to not getting Logan the ball.
"I'm trying to spread it out a bit ... other guys are coming along," (Gopher starting QB Bryan) Cupito said. "But Logan has to get the ball for us to have chance to win."
so far this season, Logan is tied with talented tight end Matt Spaeth for the team lead in receptions with 35, but tops him with 468 yards and 7 TDs.

Funny thing about Blythe is he has a mediocre QB throwing him the ball just like Calvin Johnson does yet no one really mentions poor qb play for Blythe's stats yet it is everyone's excuse for Calvin Johnson's numbers.

after breaking out as the team's top receiver as a true freshman last year, Illinois' Kyle Hudson has had a bit of a sophomore slump, showing great playmaking ability in one game, and mistakes in the next. despite his incosistency, he is still the Illini's top receiver with 22 catches for 331 yards and 3 TDs so far.

Talking about Bobby Chase and SMU, their announcers are fun to listen to. I have heard some of 2 of their games online this year and there seems to be a lot of excitement within that program, even if they are 4-4. UAB plays them in Dallas on the 31st on ESPN2.

Dicky Lyons, Jr. exploded to start the year for Kentucky. he's cooled off some, but the sophomore is still putting up impressive numbers for a poor team. so far, he has 23 catches for 407 yards and 7 TDs. additionally, he has returned 8 kickoffs for an average of just over 24 yards.

Kansas State's Jordy Nelson, who has played very little since September because of a leg injury, has re-claimed the top spot on the depth chart this week.
smiley32.gif
good luck to him against Iowa State.
-------------------------------------------------------
Eastern Michigan's Eric Deslauriers is once again among the nation's leaders in receptions, despite being on a team with only 1 win this year. Eric has 48 catches for 577 yards and 4 TDs... the lone bright spot on offense for a team whose leading rusher is a quarterback and whose quarterbacks have combined for just 6 TDs and 7 interceptions on the season.

Saturday's Kentucky-Mississippi State game will include Lyons and Lance Long, State's leader in receptions with 21 catches, but for only 143 yards and a TD. His QBs and blocking have been bad or he would have better stats. WR Will Prosser is also on that team and should see time Saturday. He was their best receiver the last 2 years but has just 8 catches this year for 95 yards.

Colonel, Kentucky also has a big white freshman receiver named Michael Strickland who gets quite a few snaps, but only has one catch on the year.

it has been a disappointing senior season for the fastest player in the MAC... Ohio's Scott Mayle has just 17 catches for 222 yards and ZERO touchdwons for one of the worst passing offenses in the nation.
smiley5.gif
he hasn't been returning many kicks either...

also Texas sophomore, Jordan Shipley, has shown big-play potential now that he finally got healthy. he has 8 catches for 3 TDs and 131 yards in limited action.

Thanks for reminding me of Michael Strickland, Jimmy. Maybe he will get to see the field more next year and there will really be something to cheer about in Bluegrass Country!

Let's not forget about Clemson's starting Wideout Tyler Grisham, who is getting underused as a starter. He has only 14 catches for 140 yards and a TD so far, but he is leading all receivers at halftime of their game with Virginia Tech.

Some info from the Auburn-Ole Miss game. Tight ends played a big part, with Tommy Trott getting 2 for 22 yards and a few other throws his way. Robert Lane had 2 for 78 yards. Auburn WR Lee Guess had 1 for 26 and Tre Smith had 1 for negative yardage with only 1 or 2 other throws his way.

Mississippi State vs. Kentucky 2nd quarter-Dicky Lyons Jr. already has 3 catches for 65 yards and a TD, and Will Prosser has a 16 yard catch. Jacob Tamme has a 14 yard catch.

Iowa TE Scott Chandler had 5 catches for 63 yards and a TD. FB Tom Busch had a 3 yard catch, and WR Andy Brodell had 3 catches for 64 yards.

BC FB Mark Palmer had 3 catches for 24 yards and a TD.

Bowling Green WR Corey Partidge had 4 catches for 31 yards, while WR Ruben Ruiz had a 12 yard catch.

Ohio St's young freshman WR Brian Hartline actually lead Ohio St in catches and yards on Sat vs. Minnesota topping both Ginn and Gonzalez in the receiving stats. Brian had his best day of the year so far with 4 catches for 69 yards!
smiley32.gif
However, Anthony Gonzalez only had 3 catches for 30 yards; due in part becuase he had to leave the game in the 3rd quarter due to a mild concussion.

Hartline will be someone to keep an eye on in the next few seasons once the Ginn hype machine has moved on to the NFL and they hopefully play a white QB again.

Hartline is a serious athlete. Terrific hurdler I believe. Nice to see him break out some.

Yeah Hartline was the Ohio D1 state champ in the 300 M hurdles. The kid can flat out run and jump.

a good story on North Texas' bad ass, Johnny Quinn; linked by DraftDaddy... he sounds very sure of himself, a trait he'll need to overcome the prejudice at the next level.

UNT receiver out to go deep</font>
McKinney graduate Quinn's ultimate goal is to catch on in NFL
12:28 AM CST on Thursday, November 2, 2006
By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle

DENTON - Johnny Quinn never gave much thought to the odds that seemed stacked against him when he set goals to become the best wide receiver in North Texas history and play in the NFL.

Quinn knew he was considered too short and too slow even for the major college level when he arrived at UNT in 2002, but he said that he thought he could overcome those shortcomings a little at a time.

"If you look at the big picture, sometimes it can be pretty scary," said Quinn, who will turn 23 on Monday. "If you break it down day by day into what you need to do to make yourself a better player or teammate, after four or five years you put yourself in a position to move to the next level."

A few respected NFL scouts said that Quinn has done enough to give himself that opportunity. He is 59 yards short of breaking UNT's career receiving yardage record and needs 16 catches to become the leader in receptions. His streak of 43 games with at least one catch ranks third nationally.

The former McKinney standout has 167 catches for 2,509 yards at UNT despite playing in a run-first offense, and he is well on his way to leading the team in receiving for the fourth straight season.

"Quinn is going to be in somebody's training camp, and there is no doubt he has a chance to be a late draft pick," said Gil Brandt, the former Cowboys vice president for player personnel who now works as an analyst for NFL.com. "You have to be doing something right to catch a pass in as many consecutive games as he has. His average of 20.9 yards a catch from his freshman year will help him."

Said C.O. Brocato, national coordinator of college scouting for the Tennessee Titans: "From what I have seen, he has a good chance to be in someone's camp. He plays hard and makes a lot of good catches."

Quinn has been a surprise for UNT since coach Darrell Dickey offered him a scholarship two days before national signing day in 2002, despite the fact that Quinn was small for a receiver at 6-0, 181, and had a mediocre 4.67-second time in the 40-yard dash. Running with the track team and spending extra time in the weight room since he arrived at UNT have helped Quinn develop into a 200-pound speedster. He has run a 4.46 40-yard dash for NFL scouts, who are also intrigued by his potential as a special teams player.

Quinn has returned punts and kicks at UNT, skills he hopes will help him realize his NFL dreams.

"When I came here, I told myself I wanted to be the best receiver to come through the program," he said. "It might have been farfetched at the time, but I believed I could do it then and I still do."

6-0 and 181 pounds, with a 4.46 40 time. That makes him an average-sized receiver at the next level, not a "small" one, and in the top 20 percent in speed. He'll need a very good 40 time and other measurables at the Combine, if he's even invited to the Combine that is.

Is it just me, or are record-setting black wide receivers never described as being desired as "special teams players" for the NFL?

Don, I can't tell you the last time I heard of a black WR being described as a special teams prospect. I guess only whites can be demons.
