My last comments on Super Bowls.

It's natural to believe that the powers-that-be want a competitive and dramatic Super Bowl, but there have still been blow-outs in previous Super Bowls and it is bound to happen in the future some:

--Joe Montana crushed Denver

--Dallas crushed Buffalo very badly in that one Super Bowl

--Tampa crushed Oakland

How did this "help" the NFL? What could have been the script?

The Caste System doesn't operate through justification, so I wouldn't say those Dallas wins ushered in a blacker NFL. That 49ers team with Joe Montana would be one of the Whitest if it was in the NFL today.

If you ever find a copy of The League (subtitled The Rise and Decline of the NFL), fwiw, the '58 title game story is on pp 53 & 54 (hardbound ed.).

I tried to dredge up the thread about it on the Balt. Sun website but it seems to have been weeded out.

Now to move this back towards the topic, SB XLIII... I flip-flopped my telly between the SB and a soccer game (on Galavision [ch. 404 on DirecTV]), the championship game of the UNCAF tournament among the Central American countries, from Honduras. Yes, I know there were a lot of blacks and mestizos playing, but I've gotten to like the precision of kicking a little white ball around, even if there's minimal scoring. And when Panama beat Costa Rica on penalty kicks, there were no gang gestures, just the Panama players jumping around for joy. Why can't black gridiron footballers act like that, rather than resort to "production numbers"?

I've been reading sport historian's and bigunreal's posts for years now. I would be disappointed to see either depart. The knowledge sport historian brings to the forum is always welcomed. Bigunreal's posts are some of the most articulate and entertaining. Edited by: Quiet Speed
