No 22, he was the leading receiver on the team in 2008 after the cocaine charge. The charge was for possession not for use. We've heard numerous stories of athletes in possession of illegal drugs, but blamed on a cousin or friend that "borrowed the car." Though he was with two other guys, Jones took the rap. He could have easily paid his buddies off to take the rap but he didn't. He served a 3 game suspension at the end of 2008 and only played 12 games - leading the team for the season. After the season he was drinking beer on a golf course in the middle of the day. Someone got wind of it and they sprung a drug test on him which found; gasp.... alchohol in his system! Since then he has never seen the field in the NFL again. In short, he went from a #1 receiver to an outcast for drinking a beer on a golf course. Edited by: Kaptain Poop

Jones should just bulk up and try playing tight end (as the Caste system have wanted to do all along) at this point since he's never going to get a legit chance at WR. Being a great pass catching TE is better than nothing or having endless token tryouts and at best being a possible practice squad player...

Nah, they would never let him switch positions again. Remember Mark Chumara? It's not like white TEs are immune to the treatment.

Well, I agree on Jones, but not entirely on Rothlisberger. Big Ben's body guards blocked off a public restroom at a club for him to have sex with a girl while out on the town- and not in the privacy of his own house.

And yes, since charges were dropped both times- there is a VERY good chance the 2nd woman was pulling a copy cat false charge of Ben once getting wind of the first woman's claim- hoping for money or maybe even just attention. Still, Ben was dumb to have a restroom blocked off at a club for quickie sex- when he already had been accused of stuff. I just hope the league doesn't whitewash him out of the league for his bad reputation. I mean there was more evidence against Kobe- and now Kobe not only has the love of DWFs again, he even got his endorsements back. Big Ben's suspension was reduced to 4 games- which was a good sign at first, before racist Mike Tomlin has recently said that Big Ben will have to compete for his starting job again- once back. With Dennis Dixon or Leftwich? What a joke- both of those black quarterbacks are below average starters for sure- at this point..

This request from me to castefootballers may seem a little odd but bare with me. I've said before that in the NFL and modern America perception often turns into reality. A media source spreads a rumor of what might happen, the people catch wind and repeat like sheep, and through raised consciousness and pressure the rumor becomes true. You know it happens.

The latest rumor is that the Vikings are looking for big fast wide reciever to take the place of Sidney Rice and to bolster that horrible recieving corp with hapless retreads like Bernard Berrian and Greg Lewis. The latest media buzz is for the Vikings to sign "Troubled" reciever Vincent Jackson. We have the internet. Why can't we start our own media buzz concentrating on Minnesota blogs, papers, and other comments section?

I want every castefootballer who reads this today to go to a Minnesota site and write about how the Vikings could get an extremely explosive reciever, when combined with Brett Favre, right now for a league minimum - no draft choice give-up necessary. That reciever is Matt Jones, of course. I just commented on the Pioneer Press. Lets see if we can start a buzz and pump life back into Matt Jones career. Edited by: Kaptain Poop

Poop, I like your idea though it would take nothing short of a miracle for Jones to get another chance. We've seen players like Mike Furrey who catch 98 ball(second in the entire NFL that season) get shafted. His best chance right now is to get on some teams practice squad and wait for injuries to occur.

A miracle is all I ask for. The Pioneer press site doesn't require a login registration and neither does this following site:

star tribune viking blog

Activism is what's often missing in our causes. This is soft activism, but nonetheless it is completely painless and even therapeutic. I can tell you by blogging on my local paper I believe I have been at least somewhat responsible for a rather unheard of rebellion against affirmative action policies in our school District. It took awhile, but two years ago absolutely nobody dared say what I was saying and now the majority of posters/people are on my side and we have unelected our entire school board. It can happen. That's modern day grassroots and it's painless. Edited by: Kaptain Poop

correction: the star tribune does require a registration, but it took me less than a minute. The Star Tribune is the widest read newspaper and I believe viking blog in Minnesota.

Not a bad idea Kaptain. And yes, grass roots rumors sometimes can be beneficial. The media and other powerful groups do this all the times, yet also exert pressure from the top down.
So we have to play the hand we're dealt. I will also spread the Jones to the Vikings rumor around the net.

Having said that, don't think for one second that Castophiles from the NFL front office don't monitor this site. Likely some twirp intern from PR or marketing who writes up summaries and hands it to this boss. Intel they call it.
Besides, scouts and others from various teams must also keep tabs on the CF pulse.
Information is power after all.

Just saying that I don't doubt there is some underground unofficial policy re Matt Jones.
Maybe it is not enforced, yet you never know when you need a favor. Teams won't cash in a big favor with the NFL to sign Jones. Or maybe most won't. Politics at the end of the day.
Yes, there is unofficial policy to promote black players and give black dysfunctionals chance after chance to succeed. Why?
Because it promotes the thesis that the media supports: black players good, whites players bad (outside of QB).
Providing young White youth with role models of White athletes that surpass "super athlete" blacks is not part of the thesis.
Simple.

The problem with the Matt Jones situation is that no one regards his 40 time as an indication of his athleticism. "Matt Jones is slow" is almost a constant theme and any sort of PR campaign in his behalf would be drowned out by the well-trained seals. Of course even if Jones has lost a step he is still a big target with good hands, but for some reason teams and fans have little interest in WRs that catch footballs.

Free agent WR Matt Jones declined an invitation to try out for the
Redskins Tuesday, telling the team that he intends to retire instead.
<div ="s_pNewsTextMain">
Jones was one of many free agent wideouts invited to work out Tuesday,
and the 'Skins ended up signing Taurus Johnson to their practice squad.
Jones' skills have eroded and his fabled freakish speed has declined
over the past couple of seasons. He had garnered little known interest
since the Bengals cut him in early September. The 21st overall pick in
the 2005 draft will end his career with 166 receptions and 2,153 yards.

All because he was caught with some friends doing coke, which makes him a choir boy compared to most of the players in the NFL. Very, very sad. And his "troubled legacy" will includeoften being mentioned for the next 30 years any time busts are brought up; just today I was reading a thread about Chris Long and someone mentioned Mike Mamula, who had a better pro career than about 50 highly drafted black DEs and DTs taken since then.

After Jones got screwed around by the Bengals, he probably figured it wasn't worth it to pursue an NFL career anymore. He knew the Redskins wouldn't sign him unless he was next to perfect. Matt Jones at 80 % would still be a huge upgrade over Armstrong and Joey Galloway.

I just saw that news about Matt Jones. Its bittersweet but I think he just got sick of being jerked around by the league. Im sure he realizes the reason he is being treated this way is due to his skin color. I enjoyed watching him over the years, I still remember him lighting up the combine. No one can take him torching all those affletic SEC defenses in college either. I wish he would of tried out but respect his decision and realize his one bad decision was magnified due to his skin color and most affletes get chance after chance. Thanks for everything Matt.

I used to watch Arkansas whenever I could when Matt was the quarterback. Here's a nice highlight reel to remember him by:

Thanks for posting that Don. I saw Matt play against UGA in Athens. I remember thinking what a stud athlete he was. What a railroad job he received in the caste laden NFL.

I agree completely. I hope he finds an enjoyable life...he sure deserves it for the past few years.

Huh? Why would an unemployed WR turn down a chance to try out for a team that has perhaps the worst receiving corps in the league? If Matt indeed has come to the realization that his skin color is the reason for his lack of opportunity in the NFL, then he ought to state that publicly. What good does it do just to quit like that?

As I've stated before, many of these white players make it very difficult to support them. This is the most baffling, unnatural reaction by a pro football player since Drew Bennett inexplicably retired, just after being signed by the Ravens a few years back.

If Jones just is tired of the nonsense he's had to go through (which I totally understand), then why didn't he just retire after the Bengals cut him? Presumably, he was still working out and in search of employment in the NFL. One would think he'd be excited that a team with awful receivers offered him a tryout.

I'm sorry, but this story just makes no sense.

I guess I knew this would happen considering what he's been through for a while now, but I didn't want to believe it. You can't blame him for finally hanging it up. It makes no sense to constantly prepare for tryouts when you practically know they are a sham. Matt Jones, you were and still are one of my favorite athletes of all time. My kepi is off to you man. You will be missed!
