From what I recall of earlier off season workouts the coaches were giving Matt Jones alot of praise. Im sure the clown who wrote this story is a huge fan of Terrell Pryor who is a less athletic version of the "long strider" Matt Jones. I think Jones will make the team.

Thing is, this article was picked up and circulated nationally by the likes of Rotoworld and other sites, helping to condition the DWFs, who already hate and belittle Jones, to not be surprised in the least if he's released.

That's terrible news! I wasn't aware that this so called "sportswriter" was taken seriously. Jones is considered a huge bust by the DWF's at this point even though he had a very good season a few years back and would have gone over 1,000 yards receiving if not for the suspension. Jack Black Del Rio screwed him and I remember we mentioned many times that he didn't even get on the field some games. In all fairness he should be starting beside "Ochostinko " with Shipley in the slot. Bryant did have two 1,000 yard seasons but he is very inconsistent and only has 4.6 speed. He's nothing more than a possession receiver. We all know he's going to start though. Even Bryant's scouting reports state that he is lazy on the field. It's still too early to make a call though.

Bryant apparently is still having problems with his knee and isa huge head case even by NFL standards, to the point that he was out of the league for the entire '07 season because noteam wanted to put up with him. Hopefully he'll be his own worst enemy again and inadvertently help Jones make the team and get some playing time.

He sure is a headcase. Also Ochostinko isn't a fast receiver. He runs in the 4.5 range and can't really stretch the field. Jones would give them an option for deep routes and that's the way I believe he'll stick. One positive is that many people are saying that Shipley will lock down the number three receiver spot. His competition is Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson so he shouldn't have a problem. Palmer is reportedly in top shape so Shipley could have a big year.

And the anti-Jones hit piece by the overweight black guy from the Dayton News continues to spread.

It'll be an upset if Jones' NFL career isn't what it appeared to be last year -- toast. He's been widely despised by the media and DWFs since the day he was drafted in the first round, and his subsequent arrest followed by a "probation violation" (drinking a few beers during a round of golf) is all that was needed to run him out of the league:

Matt Jones Unlikely To Last In Cincy

Jones didn't impress during Cincinnati's recent minicamp and was outplayed by Jerome Simpson, who hasn't seen much playing time since he was drafted.

Both receivers are likely on the bubble due to the team's depth at the position.

After watching Jones at minicamp, Holmes was not impressed. He wrote that Jones was a long strider, slow off the ball, and not really adept at using his size to his advantage. Furthermore, Holmes wrote that he'd be"Âflummoxed if Jones made the club over (Jerome) Simpson."Â

Quite frankly, I'd rather see Simpson make the club if I had the choice. He's younger, supposedly faster, and doesn't have the criminal baggage that Jones does. Plus, you'd have to believe Simpson's upside is a little bit better than Jones'. Maybe, just maybe, Simpson could eventual grow into Chad Ochcocinco's replacement.

So if the two players are anywhere close after training camp, it makes sense to keep Simpson. He's been a JAG himself at times, but maybe those days are behind him. Maybe.

Nostradamus Question of the Day: Does Matt Jones Make theRoster?

Oil change? Check. America playing in the World Cup? Check. America tying in the World Cup, calling it a victory nonetheless? Check. Tiger Woods kicking off his comeback tour around the nation to find out how many children he could have?

Check.

Bengals wide receiver depth chart? Ummm.

While anything can happen from now until the end of the team's preseason, the one thing that's becoming clear is Matt Jones. Similar to Chick Ludwig, I don't believe Matt Jones will stick around when the regular season kicks off this year. After signing in February, Jones has been on the outside looking in. Unfortunately for Jones, the best argument he could make to surpass wide receivers like Andre Caldwell or Jerome Simpson was to have stellar practices during the offseason. Otherwise, he'd have no shot at taking Caldwell's spot for playing time and Jerome Simpson needed to do just a little more than Jones to keep his spot on the roster.

And even though he was signed, it didn't bode well that his first workout was so poor that Yahoo Sports! Jason Cole wondered why the Bengals signed him in the first place. Sometimes you nail it. Sometimes you miss it. Either way, they're looking.

Furthermore, it didn't help that the Bengals drafted two more wide receivers to make his Cincinnati future that much more murkier. Then reports coming from minicamp surfaced that Jones' offseason practices seem ordinary with many notes regarding his speed off the line. Joe Reedy wrote that Jones "has been getting off the line slow." ESPN's John Clayton wrote that Jones "looks a step slow, especially running outside routes" and James Walker writes "I wasn't too impressed with what I saw in minicamp." Carlos Holmes wrote:

Who needs Matt Jones when you have Jerome Simpson? That's right, I would be flummoxed if Jones made the club over Simpson. There was not much to write home about regarding Jones' performance in minicamp. He looked like just another guy and was outperformed by Simpson, who has struggled to see the playing field since being drafted. Both receivers are likely on the bubble considering the team's depth at the position.

Jones is a long strider with little burst off the line and is not the most precise route runner. Not to mention he caught a lot of passes with his body rather than using his hands. You would also expect a guy his size to be more aggressive at the point of attack but that wasn't the case.

The 6-foot-6, 218-pound Jones was pushed off his routes with little effort by smaller cornerbacks. The receiver made it easy for corners to jam him at the line of scrimmage. Jones is going to have to show the Bengals coaching staff more than adequacy in training camp if he's looking to revitalize his career in Cincinnati.

Along with Jones, the battle for the sixth spot on the wide receiver depth chart will likely come down to Quan Cosby and Dezmon Briscoe.

It's beyond ridiculous that a WR (Jones) who is better (and also better than at least 70% of starting WR's) right NOW and he also has MUCH more upside than said teams #2 WR (Bryant, who is inconsistent and injury prone) is on the bubble to make that team... The best player play, blah, blah, blah......

Well, John Clayton usually has some legitimate inside information, so I am concerned. Training camp is the ultimate lose/lose situation for white skill players. We get glowing reports about guys like Woodhead dominating in training camp and then they get cut or disappear to the end of the bench in the regular season. However, if a white athlete has a poor training camp, they are definitely cut.

I'd be shocked if Jones wasn't in excellent shape and competing at his best. However, the constant criticism has to take its toll.

They get excited for Simpson every off-season because he makes some great plays in OTAs and pre-season, but then he stays inactive for the whole regular season because he has the brain of a three year old child. However, I am sure the Bengals are desperate to find a reason to keep Simpson so they don't have to admit that he was a wasted panic pick when they thought Chad Johnson was going to demand a trade.

So Jones gets suspended for drinking a beer, then gets blackballed out of the league for an entire season, and finally won't even be able to keep a roster spot with Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson as his competition. Someone please tell me I am dreaming.

I recall earlier in the offseason Carson Palmer being very complimentary towards Matt Jones. I think Palmer is fed up with Chad Johnson's clown gimmick. If Matt Jones has an ally in Carson Palmer it should really help his chances.

I read an article the other day that Palmer is fed up with Ochostinko. Looks like he's acting like a little boy again. Things never change do they.

That article can be found earlier in this thread. Here's the pertinent part:

Count Palmer in after throwing to his veteran receivers for six days before Tuesday.

On Monday, he said Matt Jones, the former first-round draft pick that hasn't caught an NFL pass since '08, and free-agent pickup Antonio Bryantcan give him what he's been missing since the departure of T.J. Houshmandzadeh and the injury to the late Chris Henry.

After the offense went against a defense for the first time Tuesday, you saw and heard why. While Palmer continued to be impressed by Jones, Bryant raved about Palmer.

Palmer didn't throw a deep ball to Jones on Tuesday because the Bengals were installing their short routes. But twice Jones ran by a top-tier cornerback inLeon Hallduring drills and caught one of them.

First of all, everything said and written Tuesday has to be prefaced with it is Day One and the pads don't come out for another three months or so.

But second of all, Palmer can't help but notice the 6-6 Jones.

"He looked good today," Palmer said. "He's so long. Big. So lanky. I threw him a ball when he was completely covered. He just caught it out in front of him and didn't let the DB come close to making a play on it. That's what you have to do when you're that big and you're that type of player. You need to use that to your advantage and it looks like he's going to be able to do that. I can't wait to get him out there for the long routes when we put more of the offense in and we can open him up."
Interesting isn't it, how in the course of just a few months Jones has gone from being signed by the Bengals after a workout, to that same workout afterward being anonymously described as one of the worst ever, to looking great in practice, to looking awful in practice. It ought to be instructive and further evidence that the vast majority of "news," even when it comes to sports, most of the time is a mixture of ideologically based propaganda and outright lies.Edited by: Don Wassall

More hate for Matt:

Despite the upcoming battle, there are essentially four spots that are pretty much guaranteed: Chad Ochocinco, Antonio Bryant (as long as he stays healthy), Jordan Shipley, and Andre Caldwell. That leaves six people vying for two spots. And they are:

Jerome Simpson, Dez Briscoe, Maurice Purify, Matt Jones, Freddie Brown, and Quan Cosby.

If you're going to handicap the group by talent alone, then Purify and Brown are pretty much cut. No one will expect them to make the team. That leaves Simpson, Briscoe, Jones, and Cosby. Here's a breakdown of each one's chances:

- Simpson: God love him, he's only suited up for three or four games, and has just one catch in two years. Most fans have written him off after this season, especially when the Bengals needed another receiver to contribute after Chris Henry was gone and they picked less-talented but seemingly more consistent Purify. Simpson came out of a very small Divisional I-AA school, and it seems he has trouble adjusting to the NFL game. Despite all of this, coaches praised him for his improvement over the offseason, and he was able to make a bunch of tough, jumping catches during spring practice. The reason why coaches picked him in the second round was for his deep-play potential: He's got a great vertical leap, huge hands, and great top-end speed. He just hasn't mastered the route-running abilities yet. And he doesn't seem to be good at special teams. It seems though that he's improved on his route-running ability, and if he realizes that he needs to be able to contribute to special teams if he wants to make the team as a number five receiver, I'd say he would be almost a lock to make it. Nevertheless, other people are more proven special teams players and receivers, so he has an uphill battle. Odds of making it: 4 to 1

- Cosby: He did a great job in returning punts last year. He averaged nearly 12 yards a return. He also made some nice catches at the end of the year. However, he's only 5-9, so he might not be a guy who could potentially be a starting receiver down the road, but his punt-returning skills are a huge plus. Odds: 3 to 1.

- Matt Jones: If he can put down that crack pipe, he might make the team. The dude is supposed to be fast (4.4ish) and he's 6-6, so he would be an ideal person to replace Chris Henry as a down-field target. Yet the coaches say that he had trouble beating corners at the line. He would get jammed by guys who have less body mass than he does. He does have experience, even though he's been out of the league for a year. Regardless, if this battle comes down to Simpson vs. Jones, I'd say Simpson wins out due to a few factors: we drafted Simpson, Simpson hasn't been kicked out of the league, and Simpson may have more "upside."Â￾ Jones did play QB in college, so some people have suggested that we could keep him as a seventh receiver/3rd QB. People want to boot out J.T. O'Sullivan and put Jordan Palmer as the backup QB (shiver). The chances of that happening are the same chances of Mike Brown hiring a GM. I think Jones' days with the Bengals are numbered. Odds: 7 to 1

- Dez Briscoe: Real intriguing guy right here. He scored 31 TDs in 3 years at Kansas, and he's not turning 21 until August. He didn't clock in very fast, but neither did T.J. Houshmanzadeh. I think he turned out okay. I'd say it would be a mistake to let this kid go, because I think he could be a potential starter in 3 or four years. Odds: 5 to 1full article: http://bengals.gearupforsports.com/blog/2010/06/regardless-of-who-makes-the-final-six-receivers-the-two-minute-drill-will-blow-people-away-in-10/

wow. these guys don't even bother to attempt to write factual "reports."

it would take less than 30 seconds to make a google search on Matt Jones "supposed 4.4ish" speed and learn that he is literally the fastest big man to EVER play in the NFL.

i sometimes struggle to comprehend just exactly how stupid the DWFs are in order to believe this crap. i shudder to think that these mental midgets share the same highways i do ... for they are certainly too stupid to be allowed behind the wheel.

Wow! He is not as good as Simpson orBriscoe because Simpson has the dreaded "upside" that seems to elude white players, and Briscoe is slow - but it's Ok because so is T J Houshmanzadeh!
What kind of logic is that?

I love football. I can't wait till every Sunday to watch the games. This type of treatment of white players makes me not want to watch however. If Jones doesn't even make the roster it will be the worst crime of the year.

The logic is that if Matt Jones cannot run a sub 4.4 he will be cut, but Briscoe can run a 4.6+ because other successful WRs have run similar times. White players have to be flawless to even be considered for a roster spot at the skill positions (other than QB). A black WR with Matt Jones size would be considered just fine if he ran a 4.7 (though perhaps not projected as a number one WR).

Ernest Wilford may have been the slowest wide receiver in the NFL. He ran a 4.7 and started for years at wide receiver despite putting up unimpressive numbers. He was finally moved to tight end last year but no white receiver would even make a roster with that kind of speed.

Its about technique just as much it is about strength. Jones didnt have any experience playing wide receiver when he came into the league, and wasn't well coached (how many good wide receivers are on the Jags?), yet started to get the hang of things his last season playing.

The Bengals are the front-runners to sign Terrell Owens, maybe the only team interested in him. If so that will all but officially guarantee that Matt will be cut:

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Rams have decided to pass on the idea of signing free agent Terrell Owens. FOX Sports' Jay Glazer seconds the report. Rams brass convened Monday to discuss Owens' fit in St. Louis, and decided against adding the perceived locker-room cancer to one of the league's youngest offenses. The Rams will move forward with Donnie Avery and Laurent Robinson as their starting wideouts. The Bengals are now the clear-cut favorites to sign Owens.

Well if they sign T.O, they are idiots. He was washed up two years ago but anything to screw Matt Jones over even more. This guy is getting the Danny Farmer treatment. It is disgusting.

I can't see T.O. and his ego signing with the Bengals. He knows if he signs with them he won't be the number 1 guy with all the attention, he will have to share the limelight with another egomaniac, Ochocinco. Thats the only reason why he was strongly considering St. Louis despite supposedly wanting to go to a team that were playoff contenders. I heard something about him maybe waiting until a team has an injured wide receiver in training camp.

I hope he doesn't sign with them for the sake of Matt Jones. I really want to see him get a real chance with a quarterback that has a strong arm. I saw this video on youtube recently for his rookie season where he had Leftwich (Leftwich has a strong arm, just a long wind up motion, funny how they didn't bash that when he came in the league but did for Tebow) throwing to him on a few go routes. He burned the dbs for a td when he was hit in stride (I think it was only twice that he was hit in stride)
