Federer did not win the SI athlete of the year. Dwayne Wade won it. I think it is over folks--there is no more hope. How can one rationalize anyone but Federer this year?

Can you imagine how popular Federer would be if he were black? It would be unbelievable.

Here is my take. Some will point out it is not a black white thing and mention Tom Brady won SI Sportsman in 2005. Fair enough but there is a trend one cannot ignore. Here is my point. Brady perfectly fits the white stereotype athlete for the media. Not especially athletic--or at least not swift etc.. but other qualities make him a winner. What the media cannot accept to various degrees is an athlete like Federer. A guy with blinding athletic ability and supreme speed and quickness and agility etc along with unreal fluidity and skills. And he is a winner unlike Vick who the media treats as being related to God. This apparently scares the media for the one main point the media tells us over and over is that blacks are superior athletes. SI does not want to mess with that stereotyping.
SI has in effect castrated the idea of incredible white athleticism. Hope it goes under and a new more balanced mag takes it place--sadly unlikely.
Nothing against Wade but friggen give me a break.

If Federer were black he would be spoken in the same terms of Pele--a revolutionary athletic Wonder.

The tennis community is very angry and perplexed that Federer was snubbed for SI SOY. Also many tennis fans are doubly perplexed that Federer has never made an SI cover. SI is feeling the Heat--no pun intended on that one. As for Wade-maybe he is a fine all around person and he is a terrific player but as one writer pointed out he played with Shaq--and was coached by Pat Riley.

Sorry for double triple posts but prowling around the internet there is outrage over the Federer controversy. Old pros like Frank Deford hinted at the slight. A former Managing editor was ticked off about it. All media outlets agree that Federer is the greatest athlete NOT to make the cover of SI. Worth pointing out Steve Yzerman never was on the cover-- another head scratcher. But Federer is the best not to appear on the cover. The editor of SI has taken heat from many outlets and even the savvy marketing types have questioned the wisdom of ignoring tennis. This was a major SCREW UP and it goes without saying this editor is a royal idiot with no sense of sports history. The huge public uproar begs the question when will this editor get fired? LOSER GO HOME!!!!!!!!!! One other thing. Federer is also heavily involved in charity work for UNICEF and other causes so it isn't like he is a rotten guy or anything. Man will wonders ever cease.

I agree with your posts, but this was not a screw up, mistake or bad judgment.Snubbing Roger was deliberate! They have an agenda...simple as that.

People forget all the cross marketing and such of the corporate controlled
media. Blacks won't pay attention to white stars, and won't buy things
they endorse. But whites will pay attention to blacks stars and will buy
things they endorse. So who do you pander to if this is the case?

Wade is being hyped on all major media (as well as Lebron james) in the
hopes that he will become another Michael Jordan--an advertsing gold
mine to sell to blacks and whites. Think of those interview shows on TV
where ALWAYS the star has a movie, album, or book to push--nobody's
just on for the interview. Corporate controlled media. Its all about
selling and advertising.

SI isn't naming Federer Sportsman of the Year because he cannot be cross
marketed to blacks and other minorities--tennis is not as popular as NBA
basketball to them. So despite probably being the best his sport has ever
seen, and worthy of the award, he will not get it, not because he doesn't
deserve it, but because naming him such will not make SI or the
corporation any money.

Does anyone think the free market is about meritocracy? Think again.

The last tennis player to win the award was Arthur Ashe in 1992. What did he accomplish on the court that year? Nothing! He was on his death bed and eventually died of AIDS in February of 93.

Totally agree. That's why there are so many non-whites in commercials. It's a can't-lose strategy for corporations.

The Sporting News just named Tomlinson of the Chargers their Athlete of the Year. Joke.

Tomlinson is actually a good person and a superb player. I don't have any objections to his winning an award, but I think some other very deserving candidates (Drew Brees) keep being passed over which gets to be tiring...
