I believe Roger Federer deserves male athlete of year award. Remarkable year. Three majors including Wimbledon the most prestigious and a mind blowing win -loss total. Only 22 he possesesgreat flair to go along with superior athleticism. Check T & F for female athlete of year.

What a player Roger Federer is. His ability to create winning shots out of nowhere is uncanny. He is so good I wonder how long he can keep such a high level of tennis going. It's going to be an interesting 2005. The Australian Open is right around the corner.

We've spent way too much time on the ladiesat Wimbledon, now I think Rogerdeserves some applause. He's won his third consecutive Wimbledon and is only 23 years old. When he's on, fuggettabahdit, nobody can beat him.

Folks, we have to check Roger Federer's tennis racquet. I'm suspicious. I don't think it's a tennis racquet at all, it's some sort of magical rod -- able to bend time and space. The best evidence is the semi-final match against Agassi in the Nasdaq 100 Open.

Agassi was on top of his game and playing some lights out tennis, but Roger had something in his hand performing mysterious maneuvers. I can't say for sure, but new dimensions were involved somehow. How else can you explain tennis that nobody thought humanly possible.

Here is a little excerpt explaining what took place. You can't really explain it, I mean, crop circles you can explain:

=========

From: http://www.nasdaq100open.com/news/pr/news21671.html

One has to wonder if Roger Federer at times has the ball attached to his racquet with some sort of undetectable string. It is so rare for him to miss or to be facing break points. Often Andre Agassi was left frustrated as returns which would have been winners or virtually unplayable against most other opponents were coming back at him with a high rate of interest.

He was frequently left flat footed or just shaking his head and gesticulating with his hands over what to do against the scourge of every player.

==========

Who knows what is going on? I'm starting to believe in the string theory of the universe and all that vibration stuff. Maybe Roger has his "racquet" strung/tuned with some special string material, and using just the right tension is able to tap into an unseen power. No matter how you slice it or dice it, something special is going on here.

The above over-the-toppost on Federer's play was in the spirit that when at his best his shot making ability may be the best of all time. Now, after a lay off since Wimbledon, his play in the first two rounds of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masterswas less than stellar by his standards. A close first round win over James Blake and a three set win over Nicolas Kiefer in the secondwere not his cleanest performances by far. A lot of rust. Hopefully he can use this event to round into form for the upcoming U.S. Open.

May be a chance for Andy Roddick to get one from Roger, they could meet in the finals.Edited by: Quiet Speed

Roger Federer made it look easy as he won the Australian Open.This is already his 7th grand slam title.That is just amazing.I for one have become a huge fan of his.Trying to beat him is like trying to win the Tour De France against the King Lance Armstrong.Congrats to Roger on another incredible display of tennis.Keep it going and show the world just how good you really are.

Federer has just made it to the final of the Monte Carlo masters,the biggest clay court event outside of the French open and one of the biggest tournament excluding the majors The Monte carlo event is usually a good indication of who will be the frontrunners at the French as many of its champions have gone on to win or final at Roland Garos the only major Fed has'nt won.He plays Nadal which should be a great clash as he's an absolute beast on clay.I hope Fed dose it and goes on to win the French,something Sampras never achieved. Getting anxious to purchase tickets for the men's final at the UP Open. Isn't funny how James Blake is being over promoted by the media as the next best thang. Has this guy won a grand slam event yet? I think he is too focused onpromoting his white putang girlfriend.

Federer,a couple of days ago won the Toronto masters.He's building an incredible resume as thats his 11th masters title and to put that in perspective he now ties Sampras who won 11 his whole career and only trails Agassi now in masters titles won who is on 17.Federer is now becoming almost unbeatable on North American hardcourts in similar fashion to the way Nadal dominates the prestigious European clay court tournaments.

It was also good to see Serena Williams knocked off her high horse by feisty Serb girl Jelena Jankovic.Their was no love lost between these two as icy staredowns followed certain points.Jankovic also bashed sister Venus out of Wimbledon this year so the victory is no fluke,she clearly has their number.The great thing is Jankovic refused to be intimidated by Williams bully tatics.It was great to see Serena at the end though,keeping it real and confronting the raven haired European beauty accusing her of aiming a ball into her midsection.

Wish I could have seen that. And what is there to complain about, you can't aim a ball at your opponent? If they're both at the net, if you don't have the shot for a lob the best shot is directly at the opponent so they can't get positioned for a return. Sounds like Jankovic was playing smart.

Federer won another U.S. Open today. He's won 9 of the last 14 grand slam tournaments. It's silly to say Tiger Woods is the world's greatest -athlete- for excelling at Golf, which doesn'trequire anywhere near the athleticism required to playtennis even at the lowest of levels.

You said it Bart.The stupid media just hates to give whitey any credit though.Roger Federer is one of the best athletes in the world period!He dominates tennis like no one ever has.All hail the king.He should be the sports illustrated athlete of the year for around the last four years.The only other guy close was Lance Armstrong and he is now retired.It was a good showing by Roddick.I'm glad to see him get back to a final.

Well if he doesn't make the cover of SI this week there should be an investigation. Federer is the greatest athlete in the world and I think most would agree. But consider this. If he continues at this torrid place uh we might have to discuss him in terms of greatest athlete of all time?
The guy moves around the court like greased lightening and is so fluid---how about a Joe DiMaggio comparison?
Great stuff. I am a big fan.

An AP article in the paper today states: "[Federer] has yet to conquer Roland Garros. But, still only 25, he has won Wimbledon the past four years, the U.S. Open the past three, and the Australian Open twice for a total of nine majors -- five shy of Pete Sampras' record. It's a pursuit that merits as close attention as Tiger Woods' chase of Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 golf Grand Slam titles."

Yes it does merit equal attention, but we know Federer's accomplishments and pursuits will get only a tiny fraction of the media coverage of Woods' accomplishments and pursuits. That's how it's been so far and why would anything change. Even this AP article I just quoted mentions Woods as much in it as it does Federer.

I am shocked. This has gone too far. Federer is not on the cover of SI--Ted Ginn and Aaron Ross are--. This is pure racism. There is a little pic of Maria in upper right hand corner but those don't count for much.
Federer not on the cover again. That Editor is BRAIN DEAD.
And I am not holding my breath that he will make it on the cover as sportsman of the year.
I am sick and tired of this crap.

I'm thinking that when it's all said and done that Federer will be the best tennis player of all time! He has won something like 47 of his last 48 grandslam matches and has won 7 of the last 8 grandslams I believe! The guy is dynamite. He has the Volly skills of Pete Sampras but is much more fleet of foot and plays the baseline like Agassi.
He is great at returning serves. The only area where Sampras has a small advantage over Federer is maybe in serving! Mark my words Federer will win more than 20 grandslams in his career. Give the guy an SI cover shoot for God sakes!Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins
