Venus Williams has followed up her Wimbledon victory with a loss to Myskina in the Fed Cup. The U.S. is down 0-2( best of 5) since Mashona Washington(?) lost her match to Dementieva. This is the semi-final round and the matches are being played in Moscow so the Russians do have the home field. I don't follow women's tennis too attentively but I would recognize Asagoe as Japan's top women and Tanasugarn as Thailand's top lady but until today I had never heard of Miss Washington(apparently she has been a pro since '95). Maybe Fed Cup captain Zina Garrison could fill me in about her.

The U.S. ladies may not be winning the Fed Cup this time around but it is good to see that the team has finally become athletic!

I'm not too familiar with her either. As you can see from the pictures she is not unattractive. I can't believe she is not hyped more, I guess a non-dominant black athlete does not interest the caste system media.

Mashona Washington hails from one of the more established American tennis families. Her father is an advocate for minority participation in tennis while her brothers, MaliVai and Mashiska, both played pro tennis. MaliVai, who is now a commentator, lost his only grand slam final, 1996 Wimbledon, to Richard Krajicek. Mashona has one ITF singles title, 2001 Albuquerque, to her name. Earlier this year, she was a doubles quarterfinalist at Memphis and recently teamed with Ashley Harkleroad to advance to the doubles semifinals at Charleston.

At least you can tell she is, without a doubt, female. Not half bad looking, either.
