from Rotoworld.com:

Bengals acquired FB/RB Brian Leonard from the Rams in exchange for DT Orien Harris.

A no-frills runner when healthy, Leonard showed promise as a rookie in 2006 but has since battled chronic shoulder woes. He only played fullback last year. Leonard will compete as a hybrid player and isn't a threat to Cedric Benson. He does have some third-down value, but lacks breakaway speed.

?!? possibly great news, he could definitely be a threat to Benson!

Ps i still haven't confirmed this trade anywhere else on the web.

The St. Louis Rams traded former Rutgers fullback Brian Leonard to the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, according to a Cincinnati Enquirer report.

Leonard, a fullback who will be entering his
third season in the NFL, is one of the most beloved and accomplished
players in Rutgers history. During his four years at the school, he
accumulated over 4,500 yards from scrimmage and 45 touchdowns, while
helping to usher in the resurgence of the football program under coach
Greg Schiano.

He was drafted in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft (No. 52
overall) and played in all 16 games his rookie season, amassing 486
yards from scrimmage. He ran the ball 86 times for 303 yards, including
a 102-yard performance against the Arizona Cardinals, and caught 30
passes for 183 yards.

Last season, however, Leonard was limited by injuries and saw action in just two games, rushing for seven yards on two carries.

The Bengals sent defensive tackle Orien Harris to the Rams, his
sixth NFL team. Harris played in 14 games last season and recorded 24
tackles.

Rotoworld is reflexively racist against white football and baseball players (and probably in basketball and other sports;football and baseballare the ones that I check on that site for updates).

Benson is a first round bust who finally had a bit of success in his fourth season. Leonard is a second round pick who ran a 4.49 at the Combine; I can't recall if Benson ran at the Combine but at his pro day he lumbered in at 4.60 to 4.65 according to an article I just looked up.

Even though it's the Bengals, I like this move. Cincy doesn't really have anyone at running back other than Benson besides Kenny Watson, who is a third down type of back, and journeyman DeDe Dorsey. An injury to Benson and Leonard could actually see time at the position he should be playing -- tailback.

Hopefully Leonard can revive his career. The Ram's fans were ready to completely write him off when IMO he outplayed Pittman in '07. Leonard started 3 games with 4 starting o-lineman out and also Bulger and Holt were injured for some of those games. It was a nearly IMPOSSIBLE situation for a rookie and he had one game of 100 yards rushing on over 5 YPC.

Even Steven Jackson had only averaged 3.7 YPC early that season before getting injured. Leonard also averaged 3.7 YPC for the season- at the point he was removed from the starting lineup- I recall.

Marvin Lewis does seem to like some white athletes. He was very high on Pollack before a terrible injury cut his career short. The lack of RB depth is a good thing for Brian in Cincinatti. It seems that they also view him as an RB. If he can get on the field with Chase Coffman and Carson Palmer that would be great. I am also pulling for Corey Lynch.

This could be good or bad. Good: Leonard is at least twice as good as slow, unathletic Cedric Benson and he should start straighaway. Bad: MArvin Lewis loves his team of thugs.

Even though the Bengals do seem to be getting whiter a little on the offensive side of the ball, however the defense will continue to suck. Edited by: Jack Lambert

Brian Leonard will tear it up if given the oppurtunity with the Bengals. Imagine this a black head coach trading for a white skill player and tells the player we consider you a running back. Only in America my freinds only in America.

Its all about opportunity, and white RBs,WRs, and DBs get precious little of it.

Great break for Brian. Here's to reviving his career and avoiding chronic shoulder problems for the rest of the rest of his life. It will only be a matter before Benson and Scott mess up again. HAve a good year!

from Bengals.com:

Bengals trade for running back
GEOFF HOBSON

Updated: 4 p.m.

In what looks to be the Bengals' first player-for-player trade of the decade, they picked up their potential backup running back in exchange for backup defensive lineman Orien Harris on Thursday. Brian Leonard, two years removed from the second round, comes from the Rams after spending most of last season on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

In a conference call with the Cincinnati media Thursday, Leonard says he has been cleared medically and the torn rotator cuff healed well enough that he took part in the two of new Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo's minicamps earlier this spring. Leonard was in the middle of a lift Thursday when he was summoned with the news. He wasn't too surprised.

"Part of the job. A lot of guys are moving from team-to-team each year. I'm just looking at it as an opportunity and I think it's a good opportunity for me. I'm excited about it," Leonard said of the deal. "I had some idea. When a new coaching staff comes in, you always don't know what they want or expect. I was hurt last year. Went through two minicamps, felt pretty good, and I guess they decided to go a different way. Cincinnati wanted me so I'm happy about it."

Although he made some starts at fullback as a rookie, Leonard is delighted to hear the Bengals think of him mainly as a running back.

"I'm looking forward to that. I feel I've got a lot of skills. Catch the ball out of the backfield and run the ball," Leonard said. "I don't think I'm a regular, every-down fullback to just go in there and blow up, but if they want me to do that, that's what I'll do."

The 6-1, 229-pound Leonard showed the kind of versatility the Bengals seek from their third-down backs in his rookie year of '07 when he backed up Steven Jackson with 303 yards on 86 carries for a 3.5-yard average and gained 183 more on 30 catches. Leonard, 25, came out of Rutgers as the 52nd pick in the draft and started seven games in the same year the Bengals took Auburn running back Kenny Irons at No. 49.

Leonard and starter Cedric Benson are here primarily because Irons suffered what appears to be a career-ending knee injury on his fourth carry as a rookie.

"My shoulder is feeling great. All the strength is back and I'm back to normal," said Leonard, who sprained it in preseason and tore it later before he had surgery. "

Leonard, who had a 102-yard game against the Cardinals in a stretch he started four straight in place of the injured Jackson, also played some as a blocking fullback and worked on special teams.

The trade tightens a roster that usually only has three running backs and Leonard's ability to play both backfield positions makes him valuable. Also behind starter Cedric Benson are veteran Kenny Watson, second-year man James Johnson, and sixth-round pick Bernard Scott.

"It's a great opportunity for Brian. He's a classy guy and everybody here wishes him nothing but the best," Rams exec Billy Devaney told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

I don't know what it is, but white skill players are to quick to turn themselves into "team players" and "everymen." They should say how good they are at their running, catching, etc. and tell the media they want a chance to prove themselves. Enough self-denial already!

actually people are pretty excited over at bengals forums, most see him as their second RB. here's a couple of quotes from their boards:

"

"With his speed a versitility, I expect alot of change of directions out of this guy. Some reverses and things just to keep the offense honest. I think we have needed that Tab Perry type of guy that could do a little of everything and this is another guy that can do it all. This will be interesting if his shoulders are fine. The funny thing about something you tear in there, sometimes you can have the surgery and repair it and condition it to be stronger than it was before. So we must think he is healthy enough. I can't believe how fast this dude is. He is big and he is one of our fastest backs, got to love that about him for sure."

Glad to see all the Bengals fans aren't misinformed. That's in contrast to the reflexive white bashers at RotoWorld, who've never found a white player they couldn't insult or degrade:

The Bengals plan to use Brian Leonard as a third-down back. Teams often look for more explosiveness in passing-down backs, but Cincy is planning to field one of the slowest backfields in the league with Leonard behind Cedric Benson. Leonard will have to beat out Kenny Watson for the job. DeDe Dorsey, Bernard Scott, and James Johnson are also competing.

That is purposive, agenda driven, false information if I ever saw it!

so how's Moreno and Buckhalter going to be described? Leonard actually run his 40 below 4.5...

i am not too worried about biased commentary from rotoworld. some of their material seems to be written by some mindless anti white trolls. i got used to it. everytime i see something positive about white skill players outside of QBs i am very surprised.

I find it interesting how many excuses are made for black players who commit crimes or for black QBs who under-perform. But when Leonard has a VERY legit excuse for only running for 3.7 YPC (the statistic at the end of his starting tenure) with his offense decimated by multiple injuries (also he was a mere rookie who had just 86 carries in 2007) he is completely written off by DWFs and Rotoworld. Leonard is about as fast your average 1st and 2nd team RBs median time in the league, but he's bigger and stronger and still has impressive tailback agility.

Cedric Benson ran for 3.4 and 3.5 YPC (same as Leonard in '07) the last 2 years. Benson has had lots of time, is overrated and has less upside than Leonard. Leonard just has to perfect his running vision. At least M. Lewis is more fair than Lovie and Denny Green to whites, but he also seems to like thug players.

I don't like Leonard on the Bengals. It's a team full of black thugs. He'll be the white-boy outsider in a room full of gangbangers. I think his career is over. He won't be on the roster at the start of the season is my guess. (Unless he becomes a full time waterboy/mascot FB, blocking for the brothers and throwing his body around playing white special teams demon.)
