I was talking about the tough Poles a week or 2 ago with good athletes in so many events.
Now they go and break the world Indoor record in the men's 4 x 400. Great race in which all of the Polish quartet run moderate first 200s and come home so strong. The young Americans seem on the other hand to go out hell for leather.

and the eternally injured Andrew Pozzi gets it right in the hurdles at last.
And Jared Eaton was extremely gracious in defeat I must say.

Awesome race by the Poles!!
They are always so strong in the 4 x 400m. Always! And without ever having anyone who makes the individual 400m finals.
Congratulations!

How is it that a country that does not have a huge population continues to produce excellent world class m/f 400m runners? Canada and Poland have roughly the same population yet we cant seem to do the same...oh maybe it is because AthleticsCanada is focused mainly on the transplanted negro athletes not the home grown white track and Field athletes plus hockey is the number 1 sport..

I don't know what was in the water at the NCAA indoor championships but 2 world senior records were set and one world junior record, plus a slew of collegiate records. Zack Shinnick was the lead leg on the new indoor world record 4*400 team, they pipped the Polish world record in the event that was only about a week old. This is the first collegiate team to hold a world record in many a moon and may have the new American record if all of the participants are American nationals......

I've always admired her powerhouse running style - not everyone's idea of a great style but I love it. The great thing was the ZERO wind so it's a very honest time.
She equalled the SA record 3 years ago and now it's hers, having turned 29 last week.
The final is Friday night their time but she said she targeted the semi with good warm conditions because the night's weather is unpredictable

I have always liked her as a sprinter although I do worry she is using as her body is so muscular... She has no one to push her and she runs legit 11.03, most of the time in international meets she does not fare so well but she is determined and has a fiery competitive streak. Here's hoping she can break 11.00 this year!

South Africa always seems to have good white sprinters. From what I've read there are only about 5 million whites in South Africa. Pretty much shows that if whites everywhere cared, there would probably be a lot more top white sprinters.

I went to the Sydney Grand Prix with my son-in -law tonight and saw 2 excellent Americans in Matt Centrowicz and Devon Allen both win their events.
I looked at Allen's IAAF profile and he could have won most any event he wanted tonight - what an athlete.
But with our top 4 100 guys not entering due to finalizing their Com Games prep he ran and won the 100 in a new PB 10.26 with zero wind.
He seems to have great performances in many different events.

As far as I know South African white sprinting is way down from it's peak. The peak years were probably in the banned Apartheid years where short sprinters posted times that were truly competitive with elite in the world and Paul Nash was a contender to medal in 68'.

In the last decade the only sprinters that I have noticed that have been medal contenders on the men's side have been 400 meter hurdlers who are almost middle distance runners.

yes, the current crop of (black) sprinters have certainly taken them to a level they've never approached. The 200 record from the "white" era has been smashed 5 times in the last few years (i mean, imagine a junior who took the junior record with a 20.10 a little while back now running 19.69 in the semi and taking Van Niekerk's record in the process).

Haven't heard a word about Emile Erasmus all year yet

Over the past 10 years the fastest white South African1 sprinters.
2017 - Emile Erasmus 10.08
2016 - Emile Erasmus 10.21
2015 - Danie Van Blerk 10.23 (-2.0 wind)
2014 -Emile Erasmus 10.23
2013 - Hannes Dreyer 10.21
2012 - Hannes Dreyer 10.23
2011 - Hannes Dreyer 10.27
2010 - No one under 10.30
2009 - No one under 10.30
2008 - Hannes Dreyer 10.24

Now compare that to the fastest white US sprinters over the past 10 years.
2017 - Blake Smith 10.28, possibly Wayne Sherbahn 10.22 (not sure if wind recorded)
2016 - John Teeters 10.00
2015 - John Teeters 10.07
2014 - John Teeters 10.14
2013 - John Teeters 10.27
2012 - couldn't find anyone under 10.30
2011 - Shane Crawford 10.18
2010 - couldn't find anyone under 10.30
2009 - couldn't find anyone under 10.30
2008 - couldn't find anyone under 10.30

The last 10 years has seen South Africa produce a faster white sprinter than the US 4 times. The US has produced a faster white sprinter 4 times as well. 2 years(2009/2010) were a wash with neither country producing a white sprinter under 10.30. This data is pretty telling. South Africa has a white population of 5 million. The US has a white population of about 230 million. It's absurd that South Africa has been able to basically match the US in white sprinting with 1/46th the population. What this data really tells me is that white kids in America don't really care about sprinting. If they did, it would stand to reason there would be a lot more whites running top times out of the US.

DISCLAIMER - IF MY LISTS ARE INACCURATE, FEEL FREE TO CORRECT THEM! I did my best to find the fastest white sprinters for the US which proved challenging because I couldn't find many pictures from the earlier years on the list.

In Queensland, Australia on Friday night, Ryoto Yamagata started his outdoor season running in the rain and with an opposing 1.7 wind - to post 10.15

Ryota Yamagata is a sleeper. He had a 10.00 in September of last year with only a +0.2 wind. He is now 25 years old, perfect age for a personal best. Would love to see the Japanese relay team beat the Americans and Jamaicans in a big meet.

6 of them 10.08 or better last season and a few others not far behind - loads of depth which is very encouraging.
Other countries may have one top 100 metre guy but no backup
