Well...the league will have no choice but to embrace Jake Locker when he arrives on the scene(4.39-4.4)...the Steve Young rule will just have to apply!

I liked Frost & Crouch back in the day; and would have like to have seen them get shot at QB too...but I really wanted Crouch to suceed at "tailback"...since it's so RARE to see at that position. And Frost become another John Lynch. They just did not pass the ball enough in college...that hurt them most.

Yeah the Proehl's; Waddle's; Chrebet's; Stokely's; Welker's have been accepted in this caste system over the years....if 2 of the 5 WR's(or 6)on the roster were white it usually got(gets) my attention...it seemed like any tall WR back then was immediately compared to McCaffrey...ex-Jurevicius

Big fast WR's that come to mind but faded into oblivion like ....Patrick Jeffers(6'3" 218)in99' had 63rec 1,082yds 12 TD's! Devestating knee injuries put a halt to that thanks to a cheap shot! A former walk-on in college/GO FIGURE! BTW...TJRiggins made a nice thread on him

Mark Boerigter (6'-3" 220) from tiny Hastings Started in CFL...then went to KC Chiefs(mostly reserve..but in 02' he scored on a 99 yard TD..(CAN'T FIND VIDEO) It was said his rare great size/speed ratio was impossible to ignore!! In that game he had 5-144-2 vs Chargers...but couldn't seem toshake the injury bug...

Maybe the next wave Nelson, Walter...Decker & Cooper can open the door further!! And stinkin Rivals.com

Yeah the smallest safety in the NFL Jim Leonhard is getting big props as an emerging top safety!

When I was a kid..a WR for the Bears named Ken Margerum(back in 80's)stated he wore "black cleats" to make him appear slower with his deceptive speed....

Marc Boerigter was cut from the Packers and the Colts before training camp in the 2006 season. He bounced around the CFL (again), and retired 2 seasons ago. He should have been a faster version of Torry Holt. His injury problems prevented him from becoming a start in Kansas City. Then again, even if he were healthy, the System may have cleansed him at any random time"¦after all; he didn't fit the "short white slot receiver"Â￾ formula. As others have mentioned, this is the only blueprint the NFL will tolerate for their receivers, with few exceptions.Edited by: Thrashen

Boerigter was thoroughly screwed over before he blew out his knee. His '02 season, when he had the 99 yard TD reception, was remarkable -- 20 receptions for 420 yards and 8 TDs. His average per catch of 21.0 yards would have easily topped the league had he been eligible (the best that year was 17.2); and even as a backup Boerigter's 8 TDs tied for 9th best in the NFL in 2002.

Boerigter had a great connection with Trent Green but in 2003 instead of being promoted to starter his role was "inexplicably" reduced, the same phenomenon that happens over and over in the NFL with White receivers who get a chance and do wellonly to be"punished" the following season.Boerigter all but disappearedfrom the offense and had but 11 catches for 158 yards in '03. It wasn't until the '04 preseason that he blew out his knee. BTW I was watching that game and what I still remember was play by play announcer Don Criqui saying, asa shot was shown of Boerigter beingtaken off the field on a carta while after his initial injury, "And there goes that receiver who was hurt earlier." He couldn't be bothered to say his name, or perhaps he never bothered to learn it. The KC head coach who screwed Boerigter was Dick Vermeil, who always saved his gushing tears of empathy for black players only.

Boerigter had just 8 receptions in '05 then was out of the league. In '06 he was having a great training camp with Green Bay but was suddenly waived well before the initial round of cuts that year (he was the only Packer cut from a roster that numbered 80 or so at the time). Before that the localmedia had suddenly jumped all over him, much the way we're seeing it now with Matt Jones.

The same thing occurred in Pittsburgh with Danny Farmer in his rookie training camp in 2000-- the Pittsburgh media turned on him right after CB Chad Scott assaulted him in practice (the same Chad Scott who blew out Patrick Jeffers' knee that same preseason, ending Jeffers' career after his brilliant '99 season). The local beat writers are often regurgitating off the record opinions of the coaching staff, which is why I think persecuted Matt Jones is doomed in Cincinnati; Jordan Shipley is obviously very good and they're just not going to keep two very talented White receivers on that team.Edited by: Don Wassall

Thanks for the comments...always enjoy yall's replies...I would like to hopewe are in the beginingof seeingsome cracks in the caste system...now that we have a diversified president
...but it's been painful nonetheless

Another big WR that comes to mind getting screwed over.....

Chass Gessner 6'4" 218....(Now in the UFL) Got cut by the Tampa Bay Bucs in 07'...he looked good in training Camp when given the opportunity; he should have made this team....check out his hard road

Gessner who was an All-American lacrosse star at Brown, gave up the sport as a senior to focus on football. An undrafted free agent, he spent a chunk of the 2003 season with New England, earning a Super Bowl ring. In addition, he has spent time with the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe and on the practice squads of the New York Jets (2004) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2006-2007) before a brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks (2008Edited by: TwentyTwo

Twenty Two, we are very familiar with Chas Gessner. he, like so many other White wideouts, was royally screwed by the NFL and the caste system. if you'd like to read a long list of players (and their stories as related to the NFL), perhaps you'd like to check out the CF article The NFL Without the Caste System.

while not comprehensive, it certainly gives a startling recap of the many White athletes who have been cast(e) aside because of their lack of melanin.

Don, that's the first I heard of Danny Farmer being assaulted. Is it just me or do affletes love attacking white players, especially white skill players? Also I have asked this question once before on this site but no one was able to answer it. Does anyone remember when Cam Cleeland, the white tight end from the Saints was assaulted? I think it was 1999 his rookie season. I believe either he or his father said something to the media that the assault was racial. I googled it but wasn't able to find anything about race being mentioned but I could have sworn race was mentioned. Of course the affletes weren't given any Kerry Collins treatment afterwords.

What I remember about Cleeland is that it supposedly was some sort of "rookie hazing" but went wellbeyond that to him getting pummelled pretty badly.

As for Farmer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ran a giant picture in its sports section showing Chad Scott punching Danny Farmer in August of 2000. From what I could gather, Farmer didn't try to defend himself. Before then his media coverage had been okay but stereotypical (his size, hands and intelligence were praised but he was branded as "slow" even though his Combine 40 time was identical to that of that year's first round pick, Plaxico Burress, who was always praised as "fast." I pointed this out in a letter to the editor that the P-G printed.)

But from that day on, Farmer was suddenly "on the bubble," even though he was a 4th round pick and had, even with his skin deficiency, been projected to be a first or second round pick before being injured his senior seasonduring his record breaking career atUCLA. His UCLA QB, Cade McNown (also royally screwed by the NFL), had said in a Sports Illustrated article after the college all star games that Farmer was the best receiver he had ever thrown to, better than Torry Holt, Peerless Price and other highly touted black receivers.

So instead of battling for the 3rd, or at worst 4th receiver spot, Farmer was now in a fight with the legendary Courtney Hawkins and other black immortals just to make the team, as daily reported by the media, which had done a 180 in its reporting on him. He didn't; he was the highest drafted rookie in 2000 to be cut. It was obvious that Scott and Co. had relayed the message to wigger Bill Cowher that they didn't want this exceptionally talented"white boy" on the team and Cowher complied, as did Cowher's white cronies in the media.

Farmer did very well in limited stints with the Bengals before being "inexplicably" waived by them, again right after reports that had him ina fight to be the team's second or third receiver. He ended up in Tampa Bay, where Jon Gruden cut both he and the above-mentioned Chas Gessner. Such is life in the NFL for White players.

It was a rookie hazing. Yes he did get beat up pretty badly. The thing I wanted to confirm however is the racial aspect of it. I can't find anything about the racial remarks the blacks supposedly made toward him. It seems like it's buried by the media but I am almost positive Cleeland's father mentioned racial slurs were used as well. No surprise the black players were never given the Kerry Collins treatment who was called a racist for a joke he once made.I actually found something on that hazing incident. Here is the article. Cleeland's father said that the hazing was racially motivated. He probably endured racial slurs yet was too cowardly to say anything about it. His father had to say it. That's a big problem with white people today. http://cgi.cnnsi.com/football/nfl/news/1998/08/25/hazing_investigate/

Getting back to Danny Farmer he was a very good receiver. He also had a volleyball background. I would compare him to Keyshawn Johnson because of similar height and speed. Keyshawn ran a 4.6 yet was the second pick of the draft I believe. Only a black player has the luxury of being below average in speed and still getting picked very early. Farmer could have had just as good a career as Johnson.

Don, just wanted to add a few tidbits about Boerighter. One, he didn't just show up out of "nowhere". He wasn't even offered a NFL contract (or tryout)coming from a some small NAIA school, but he wound up going to Canada where he totally dominated from day one. I guess all those superior athletes/ex-NFL picksthat CFL teams imported from the US just couldn't handle him for a few years.

KC won a small "bidding war" to bring him back to the states and seemed to have big plans for him. After his amazing, rookiebreakout season with KC he just happened to fall off the radar. Similar to the way talented tall/athletic receivers Justin Armour, Sean LaChapelle and Keith Poole "aka White Rice", just disappeared or where demoted aftervery good seasons, in which most would've expected a promotion.

Secondly, keeping with the theme of smaller, lesser talented white slots being allowed to play, while the more talented ones(bigger/faster) are pushed aside, Boerighter was nudged out of KC, in part, by a tiny slot receiver/ex-AFL star named Chris Horn, who became Vermeil's special teams mascot/5th receiver for a few years. No hating on Horn, but it's just another example of how many very talented white WR's are pushed out early, sometimes by lesser talented whites. This would be tantamount, for example, to Eric Decker being cut in favor of Tyler Grisham or Lance Long or J. Nelson being displaced by Brett Swain. No offense, but Decker and Nelson have the pro-bowl talent, while the others aren't even close.

I remember the Cleeland incident real well. He looked like a rising star early on (Jason Whitten type), but was never really the same after his first year. Eventually Hasslet just took him out, like he did to a lot of Ditka's highly touted young white prospects -- Brady Smith, Jared Tomich, Rob Kelly, Keith Poole, ect...Only Kyle Turley survived for a while.

Here's a very a telling/sad article from a few years back. Talks about how Hasslet just suddenly derailed Keith Poole's career. Poole felt he was going to be promotedand get a salary raise after a solid season, butjerky Jimmy informed him he would take a pay-cut and would be demoted. Hasslet offered no rational for the demotion or paycut...By the way, notice how thisidiotic female writerrefers to Keith as a "classic overachier", when reality was he once dashed by Deion Sanders (fast CB ever?), for a long, gamewinning TD during a nationally televised game?

Truthteller, any idea what happened to Keith Poole? He had a few decent seasons with the Saints with the abysmal Aarons Brooks as his quarterback. After that he fell off the NFL map. I always wanted to know how fast he was. I think he was at least a 4.4 guy because he had good deep speed and could take corners.

That article from 6 years ago (I posted above), pretty much tells his final football story: Went from a guy who looked like a 2000's version of Roger Carr (absolute pro bowl caliber WR inthe1970's) to a total nothing/5th WR candidatein fairly short order. I don't remember Carr, specifically, but I have some retro topps cards and have googled him to learn about his career. He looked and played a lot like Poole did -- Keith could've past for his son/much younger brother. I'm sure had Poole come along in the 1970's, he would've been a first rounder like Carr was...and would been given the "chance" to have a longer career.

Here'sKeith's current facebook page:

P.S: Mods might want to consider moving part of this thread (when it changes over from the Bucs to the general WR discussion) to the main forum. Too many posters have put in a lot of great info here. Would be sad to this go away that quickly in a "2009 Bucs" thread.

Edit add-on: Check out this pic of Poole and Ditka (from Keith's facebook page)....then compare that to how Hasslet treated him?

Yep, Horn is a great example of what we've been talking about. He went from KC to New Orleans, where he outlasted Mike Hass, Aaron Hosack and Chase Lyman in training camp before he too was purged. Hass, Hosack and Lyman should all be starting wideouts in the NFL. That purge is a big reason why I've neverrespected Sean Payton in spite ofthe "Snow Patrol" and the few other Whites he's used on defense.

Back to Boerigter, I had never heard of him until he starred in the CFL and there was actually an NFL bidding war to sign him. He picks the Chiefs and of course gets screwed over even after his brilliant work as a backup in '02, and then no one else gives him an opportunity.

Keith Poole led the NFL in yards per reception in '99, the only season he was used as a semi-starter in the NFL. The next season Jim Haslet replaced Mike Ditka and purged all the White talent and Poole was soon out of the league.

In '99, Poole, Patrick Jeffers and Tim Dwight were all among the top five in yards per reception. The next season Poole and Dwight were demoted, and Jeffers had his knee blown out in a preseason game as described earlier in the thread.

I've written several times before about the 1999 season and how White receivers dominated the second half of it only to be put in their place the following year; unfortunately this most informative thread will soon follow those previous posts and be lost in the ever growing archives on the board.Edited by: Don Wassall

Thanks Jimmy C for digging into the archives; for this still relative newcomer to CF...very nice article; impessive work...those names brought back some memories....my bad for the old newsbringing up those names of ex-WR's yall have discussed in the past..not telling yall anything most of yall knew already; yall are on top of it!....this website is a breath of fresh air; long before I had internet I thought I was alone watching the demise of so many quality skill position players thru the years!

The Saints are my favorite team...remember those names mentioned well! Ditka's white draft caught my attention back then..

Oh yeah...back to talking Tampa Bay Buc football...looks likey will be among the least white football teams again...wonder how many other teams in the NFL will have 3 white safeties make the 53-man roster?? I'll be hoping for the best! One book says Sabby failed to establish himself as a playmaker...is Corey Lynch their designated special-teams mascot?? Cody Grimm should be hard to keep off the field when all is said & done! But sure he will join Lynch in the meantime.

Will miss Chris Hovan; does he land on another team??...hopefully Erik Lorig will stick...will Ruud be the only white starter on D??

Twentytwo, don't forget that they have Matt O'Hanlon as well but he's a long shot to make the roster. Lorig may stick but we all know he won't start or play much at all. He wasn't expected to get drafted but was picked up in the 7th round.

As far as Corey Lynch he has a total of only 15 tackles in two seasons. I would hope he would be used as more than just a special teams demon.

Lynch will make the team as a backup safety and wstd, his ability to block kicks will keep him in the NFL but most likely never as a starter unless there's a rash of injuries.

Will the one prominent White player left on the team be driven out of town?

Barrett Rudd said he considered walking out of training camp due to his contract dispute. Ruud has reportedly been "furious" about his contract situation, and his disappointment only grew when the Bucs passed him over to give left tackle Donald Penn an extension. "You'd like to think your results speak for themselves," Ruud said. "... You always want to be rewarded for your performance. That's kind of the bottom line." The linebacker will be an unrestricted free agent after the season and will almost surely sign elsewhere if he's not extended.
