i know the college football season is still several weeks away, but the publicity machines for "performance" based awards such as the Heisman are already kicking into gear. just check out the latest example...

Fox Sports has listed its top 100 potential candidates to win the Heisman trophy, and i was very confused by its rankings. go figure.

as many of us know, Eric Weddle, possibly the best defensive back in the country, went head to head in man to man coverage against supposedly the nation's most physically gifted wide receiver, Georgia Tech's calvin johnson, for an entire game and held him to a measly two catches for 17 yards. a completely dominant performance.

however, in their list of potential award-winning candidates, here's what they had to say. and i quote:

39. WR Calvin Johnson, Georgia Tech - Pound for pound, Johnson's the best receiver in America. However, unless he has a Larry Fitzgerald circa 2003 season and Reggie Ball starts channeling Joe Hamilton, he'll spend the year vying for the Biletnikoff Award. A Sept. 2 visit from Notre Dame gives Johnson a high-profile chance to upstage Brady Quinn.

93. S Eric Weddle, Utah - If the Heisman truly went to the game's most outstanding player, Weddle would belong somewhere in the top 50. He's one of those rare defensive players that can change the momentum of a game with his ability to make big plays and create turnovers.

somewhere in the top 50? WTF!?! it's just another example of how under-appreciated white athletes are. the self-loathing whites out there even believe this crap.

incidentally, Brian Leonard was ranked number 68 and Jeff Samardzija was rated number 48. additionally, CSU tailback Kyle Bell and Iowa State wide receiver Todd Blythe didn't even make the list. here's the link for the entire article and list: link
