Unmistakable Chase Winovich never lets Patriots defense rest

FOXBOROUGH — It’s never hard to spot Chase Winovich on the football field.

With his golden hair flowing out of the back of his helmet and his engine always revving in the fifth gear, it’s impossible for the Patriots defensive end to sneak up on an offense.

That mattered little Sunday as the Jets couldn’t keep Winovich out of their backfield or off their quarterback in New England’s 28-14 win at Gillette Stadium.

Winovich, sporting an oversized protective contraption on his right hand after an early injury — it looked like a taped-up mitten — played through the intermittent snowflakes as if his locks were on fire.

He finished with six tackles, including a pair of sacks, and three hits landed on Sam Darnold.

Winovich had a team-high 5½ sacks this season and figures to be a huge part of the Patriots defense moving forward.

“I thought Chase played hard, like he always does,” said coach Bill Belichick. “Brought some good pressure, some inside pressure on the quarterback. With Josh Uche out, Chase stepped up, Rashod Berry stepped up, played some for us, too.’'

Winovich spearheaded an attack that never really let Darnold get comfortable.

“Overall, we had decent pressure on the quarterback, forced him out of the pocket a couple times, at least knocked him down a couple times there, created some longer yardage situations,’' said Belichick. “Yeah, those are positives.’'

Winovich plays with an unmistakable indefatigable presence that rubs off on his teammates.

“Chase plays hard all the time,” said the coach. “Usually plays all four phases of the kicking game. Sometimes we pull him off one, but usually at least three phases, a lot of times four. He’s a kid that has a lot of versatility for us. Certainly, the pass rush, that was good for us today from him and, like I said, Adam [Butler], Deatrich [Wise], Rashod.”

Funny how BB can't compliment Winovich without bringing up other players. Anytime I have watched the Pats this year he stands out and is always making plays yet is not a full time starter on the defense. If he had more snaps then he would easily have finished with double digit sacks. Maybe in 2021 they will learn to utilize Chase correctly or trade him away - the pipe dream for me would be Winovich going to San Fran to pair up with Bosa and Jimmy G traded back to New England.

Chase Winovich, locker room cancer lol. If he's "guilty" of anything it's likely being too enthusiastic for morbid Belichick's taste:

Chase Winovich’s ‘Mouth’ Reportedly Has Patriots Concerned

by Dakota Randall

The second-year linbacker struggled to find a consistent role

Chase Winovich apparently needs to alter his behavior if he wants to have a long career in New England.

Clearly talented, the second-year linebacker showed flashes of star pass-rusher potential this season, as he did through stretches of his freshman campaign. But Winovich also struggled to get on the field in early down, run-stopping scenarios, leading to multiple games with snap count totals jarringly low for a player of his caliber.

The Michigan product and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick both sang optimistic tunes throughout the 2020 season, but it was clear to anyone watching that something was up beyond mere pessimism over Winovich’s ability to play against the run. Rumors of issues caused by 2019 third-round pick’s personality were not hard to find.

That brings us to Tuesday, when Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard published an interesting column offering sourced info on how the Patriots currently feel about some of their young players. His blurb about Winovich was particularly noteworthy.

Take a look:

Had a monster game against the Jets, which we also saw earlier in the season. In between? Just a sub-rusher role. Why? Because he can’t be counted on a down-to-down basis to Do His Job on the edge, and I’m not sure the team will ever trust him to do that — he’s almost certain to have competition at the position next year. There’s also the issue of his mouth, which is a concern internally because he rarely thinks he’s wrong and is a bit of a locker room lawyer (sounds like someone around here who writes about football). I’ve floated moving him to (inside linebacker) but that has been shot down because if of the lack of faith he will consistently do the correct things within the scheme.

If true, Bedard’s report paints an image of a player who, for all his talent, has yet to acquiesce to certain demands of the “Patriot way.” That doesn’t necessarily mean there is anything wrong with Winovich; rather, it indicates he might not be a perfect fit with the Patriots.

Still, New England has few players currently on its defense with the kind of upside Winovich has. It’s imperative Winovich and the Patriots iron out their differences before the 2021 season.

Winovich should request a trade if he gets jerked around again. BB wants to waste his talent, then get the hell out of there.

*Make it happen Gruden! Trade that bust from Clemson for a Wolfman like Winovich!

Notice how they want to shift a potential star pass rusher to inside linebacker? Typical caste tactics on the part of the mainstream media.

I wouldn't mind seeing this trade scenario occur as the Steelers would likely make better use of Winovich than New England has:

On Thursday, Bleacher Report published a theoretical trade for every team in the National Football League. The one it created for the Steelers will raise eyebrows locally. Writer Chris Roling suggested the Steelers should send a 2022 fourth-round pick to the New England Patriots for former WPIAL star Chase Winovich (Thomas Jefferson) as a way to fill the void created by Bud Dupree’s departure via free agency.

“Chase Winovich played just 58 percent of the Patriots’ defensive snaps last year but had 5.5 sacks for the second season in a row,” Roling wrote. “After a roster reset, the Patriots might be willing to let a versatile piece like that go for the right price. It’s the type of low-cost move the Steelers are capable of making into a big win on the field given the unit Winovich would join.”

That roster reset includes front-seven free-agent signees Kyle Van Noy and Matthew Judon, as well as the selection of Oklahoma pass rusher Ronnie Perkins in the third round of the draft.

But that doesn’t mean New England’s Bill Belichick would simply be willing to ship Winovich to a conference rival for a Day 3 pick. Especially since that fourth-round pick was already dealt to Miami so the organization could select Wisconsin defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk. So a different package would need to be presented as compensation.

Chase's snap counts through Week 5 have been 12 (22%), 20 (27%), 17 (27%), 22 (28%), and 7 (12%). source

He clearly needs to escape from the Belichick plantation. Bill's son Stephen coaches New England's outside linebackers.

Interesting. Gotta love the nepotism. Kinda how Chrissie landed his son a gig at CBS as well.

Winovich has cut off his long blonde hair, symbolic of his new start with the Browns, and is ready to thrive in 2022. It won't surprise me in the least if he becomes a high-impact player this season after being underused and treated poorly by The Genius:
